Johannesburg - Steve Hofmeyr will roll up his sleeves on Saturday morning to help relieve pressure on health workers caused by the ongoing strike at the Pretoria Academic Hospital.

Singer Sunette Bridges and Izak Davel, who plays the role of Scab in the M-Net soap Egoli, might also turn up.

Hofmeyr said he was willing to do anything, even if it meant changing an adult's nappy or cleaning the corridors.

"We'll see what the guys can stomach," he said. "Mine is quite strong."

The singer called on the public via his online blog to help relieve the staff shortage at hospitals by offering their help as volunteers.

    Once-off action to help hospitals

"I'm making myself available to support in any possible way without choosing sides or judging those who want to strike (because they also have a case)."

Hofmeyr said it was a once off action to help hospitals and medical practitioners who suffered a staff shortage. "We are trying to set an example, and it might have a wonderful ripple effect."

He called on the media and artists to join the action, which is being done in co-operation of the Solidarity union.

"We are not unique or even on time," he wrote on his blog. "There are a lot of reports about people who care to step in where necessary and have already offered their help."

Volunteers who want to help at this hospital will meet in front of the hospital gates in Voortrekker Streek at 08:45.

    - Beeld

Good on you, Steve! Great to see that empathy with your fellow man. Some entertainers become very "hoogmoedig" but you have your feet firmly on the ground and you are a great citizen of Pretoria. - Ann

      Great idea

This is a great idea to help the hospitals with the burden they face. I think it's sad and downright murderous when a nurse tells a mother to take her baby home because they won't care for him, only for the baby to DIE that same evening! I'll certainly be there to help. C u in the morning! Charms - Charmayne

I think the fact that we still have people who are willing to care for the sick and less fortunate in S.A. is great although they don't have to. - Rashid Chin
