Johannesburg - Rumours and SMSs that did the rounds on Thursday afternoon about Steve Hofmeyr's death in a car crash, are not true.

Hysterical fans were phoning Beeld newspaper on Thursday with the news that the popular singer was involved in a car accident near Amanzimtoti in KwaZulu-Natal.

Hofmeyr's personal assistant, Suzanne Rabey, said the singer was alive and well and on his way to Cape Town on Thursday to do some shows.

The rumours began when someone started passing on an SMS and the "news" was finally broadcast on Jacaranda 94.2.
