Johannesburg - Fans of the M-Net soapie Egoli have been divided in the past few weeks on the use of regular flashbacks to episodes and plots from bygone years.

The majority were very much against it, but others welcomed an opportunity to see old favourites like David Vlok (Tim) and the late Hannah Botha (Elsa) in action again.

The flashbacks were introduced by the producers shortly after open time was scrapped by the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa), to show characters reflecting on past events.

Viewers complained on the soapie's website that this was a waste of time, which could rather have been used to develop more dramatic plots.

One fan even said the producers wanted to save on costs in this way now that the story was no longer available to open-time viewers.

    'Flashbacks popular with new fans'

M-Net and the producers stressed on Tuesday that this was not the case.

The head of M-Net's local productions, Carl Fischer said the flashbacks were very popular, especially among the fans who'd started watching the soapie more recently, since the addition of English sub-titles.

He added that they'd received requests over the years to re-broadcast Egoli from the very beginning.

"M-Net cannot flight all of these episodes again, that's why the flashbacks help as a device. It's always difficult to please all our subscribers and viewers, but we take all feedback from them very seriously."

    - Beeld

      Egoli Flashbacks

If it was 1 or 2 minutes I might have agreed but some episodes had less than 10 minutes of new footage - sometimes without anything new contributing to the storyline. This is nothing other than cost saving. - Johan

Obviously the writers of Egoli are running out of original material if they have to resort to flashbacks! - Yawn

At first it was rather interesting, now I just find it highly irritating. I feel cheated, because during a ? hour episode, we get to see about 10 minutes of new story. - Thea

Please refrain from screening flashbacks in egoli. It is frustrating! Concentrate more on coming up with new ideas for the show as it seems they have run out of ideas. - jenny putter

      Carl Fischer

Amazing how Carl Fischer ALWAYS quotes the "very popular" with viewers tack every time a show is even mildly criticised! Show us the stats Mr Fischer - methinks you hide behind spin and puffery and not facts. - yeah right Carl!

Don't mind them occasionally but don't enjoy the whole episode being dominated by them. - SB

      Lost the plot

I just feel Egoli has run it's course. They should all come with IQ warnings. I just find that domestic TV just does not give enough information and instead we are 'dumbed down' by a barrage of soapies to fill the gap. Whenever I switch on TV I get hit by BackStab..I meant BackStage with that annoying jingle. Egoli with a never-ending line of characters. The squeaky clean Sevende Laan and the hideous Scramble..oops, Scandal. The only one worth 10 minutes is Is-it-A-Dingo. - JP

Egoli should have died a painful death 10 years ago. It is so stale, even the intro's they show to get you excited about the show make you yawn. It's enough to give you diarrhea. - Josh

It's extremely irritating and I'm sure it's a cost saver for Egoli. PLEASE STOP DOING IT! I change channels when the cost saving flashbacks make their irritating appearance! Come on Egoli... don't let us down now! - Christine

There is a comment in the news article that the flashbacks are reportedly very popular with new viewers to Egoli. Does that mean that the viewers who have been watching for the last 10/15 years are not important to MNET. I have been a loyal supporter of Egoli since inception, however I have stopped watching as I find it incredibly irritating - surely there should be some consideration given to viewers who do not enjoy this? GO MNET - how to get rid of loyal viewers in one month! - Michele
