Johannesburg - Fans of the M-Net soapie Egoli have been divided in the past few weeks on the use of regular flashbacks to episodes and plots from bygone years.
The majority were very much against it, but others welcomed an opportunity to see old favourites like David Vlok (Tim) and the late Hannah Botha (Elsa) in action again.
The flashbacks were introduced by the producers shortly after open time was scrapped by the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa), to show characters reflecting on past events.
Viewers complained on the soapie's website that this was a waste of time, which could rather have been used to develop more dramatic plots.
One fan even said the producers wanted to save on costs in this way now that the story was no longer available to open-time viewers.
'Flashbacks popular with new fans'
M-Net and the producers stressed on Tuesday that this was not the case.
The head of M-Net's local productions, Carl Fischer said the flashbacks were very popular, especially among the fans who'd started watching the soapie more recently, since the addition of English sub-titles.
He added that they'd received requests over the years to re-broadcast Egoli from the very beginning.
"M-Net cannot flight all of these episodes again, that's why the flashbacks help as a device. It's always difficult to please all our subscribers and viewers, but we take all feedback from them very seriously."
