Pretoria - "Erik was afraid he would die. He realised he was going to drown, but he couldn't move his arms or legs to save himself."

So says Peter Butler, actor Erik Holm's friend.

Holm, who's perhaps best remembered for his guest appearance in the Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan was paralysed in a freak accident on Friday last week when he dived into a shallow man-made lake at the Secunda waterfront.

"Erik has regained some movement in his arms," Butler said.

Pretoria's Muelmed Medi-Clinic spokesperson Johann Dednam said Holm had been discharged from the ICU on Monday and transferred to the rehabilitation centre to begin an intensive programme where his progress would be strictly monitored.

"He's already making very good progress," Dednam said.

According to Butler, Holm would be spending the next three months in the rehabilitation centre.

"It's touch-and-go at this stage to see if he'll get completely better or remain paralysed.

"The next week will be critical to his recovery.

"Luckily there's no brain damage and he's still Erik.

"I think he'll get completely better, because I know Erik is a real fighter.

"We're now asking for positive energy, good wishes and prayers. We need a miracle," Butler said.

Professor Erik Holm, Erik's father, said "things are going well with Erik and he is in a stable condition.

"We'll only know later what functions he'll regain."

Erik's mom Elsabe said his recovery depended on him being kept quiet and not being overtaxed by visitors.
