Johannesburg - A gospel singer was assaulted when she asked a rural Eastern Cape shopkeeper about pirated DVDs of her work being on sale at cut prices, police said on Sunday.
Spokesperson Jackson Manatha said Lusanda Mcinga, 43, of the Lusanda Spiritual Group was assaulted at a Chinese-owned shop at Willowvale on Saturday afternoon.
"The artist was surprised to see her DVD being sold for only R60 and she asked why the price (of the DVD) was only R60.
"The two shop owners were not aware of who she was," said Manatha.
He said that Mcinga then became aware that her music had been pirated.
"It was at that stage that a misunderstanding grew and the two Chinese men assaulted the woman with their fists."
Mcinga then reported the matter to the police .
"Police visited the scene but the suspects were no longer in the shop. No arrests have been made," said Manatha.
