Cape Town - A documentary film about South African comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys has won the second prize in the Panorama section at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival over the weekend.
Darling! The Pieter Dirk Uys Story, filmed by 17-year-old Australian Julian Shaw, beat pop star Madonna's film Filth And Wisdom on Saturday night.
Shaw first saw Uys at the Sydney Opera House when he was only 15 and vowed to make a film about him one day.
The documentary focuses mainly on the comedian's Aids-presentations at South African schools and his use of humour to confront fear and stigma.
The Brisbane Times reported that the young Shaw was "visibly thrilled" with the tribute.
"You know what this means?" he said to the packed Berlin theatre. "We beat Madonna. And I won't ever be able to say that again."
Pieter-Dirk Uys attended the screening of the film at the Berlin Festival and when his stage persona Evita made a special appearance afterwards, he got a standing ovation from the audience.
Darling! The Pieter Dirk Uys Story has been honoured with numerous awards including Australia's Independent Spirit Award, and was also a winner at South Africa's Encounters Documentary Festival in 2007.
