Forty artists to jazz up CT
25/03/2008 14:39 - (SA)
Cape Town - The much anticipated 9th Cape Town International Jazz Festival will kick off on Friday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
This proudly South African event, ranked among the best jazz festivals in the world, will bring together 40 local and international acts at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 28 and 29 March 2008, while offering a range of parallel exhibitions, courses and workshops for music lovers and entrepreneurs.
According to online music magazine Melodytrip's ranking of jazz festivals, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival is now No 4 in the world, surpassing events such as Switzerland's Montreaux Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland.
"The formula of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival is simple: bring jazz together with its popular music siblings, says festival director Rashid Lombard.
"The 33 356 people who attended the 2007 festival is proof that this is a winning formula," he adds.
Free pre-festival concert
Cape Town's jazz festivities will kick of with a free pre-festival concert at Green Market Square on Wednesday 26 March from 17:00.
Artists performing at this gig, which has become a permanent feature on the annual festival programme, are Jonathan Rubain, UCT BIG BAND (13 piece), Ananda Project, Gerald Albright and Jimmy Dludlu.
"This free concert offers a great evening of jazz and jazz fusions for all those Cape Town music fans who may not be able to attend the two nights at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, as well as those fans who do have tickets but still wouldn't miss this annual festival warm-up," says Lombard.
Each artist will perform for approximately 30 minutes, and the show is expected to finish at 22:00.
Special trains have been scheduled for jazz lovers who would like to return home by train after the event.
Workshops
The musical and training workshops offered at the festival will be guided by dedicated professionals and provide valuable, accessible and free information directly related to the industry.
For the first time in Africa, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival will also link up over the internet with the renowned Juilliard School in New York, for the relay of a jazz master class from the school.
The school, arguably the leading performing arts institution in the world, is applying innovative technology that allows for the relay of real-time master classes to anywhere else in the world.
Labelled "Jazz Conversations", this intercontinental experimental distance learning event will take place on Wednesday 26 March at Auditorium 1, Cape Town International Convention Centre.
