Nelspruit - Ligwalagwala FM disk jockey, DJ Sdunkero, has brought a South African Music Award (Sama) home to Mpumalanga.
DJ Sdunkero, whose real name is Dumisane Kunene, walked away with the MTN Record of the Year Award on Saturday night for his smash hit Maputo Song from the album Edladleni Volume 1.
Ligwalagwala FM, a Siswati-language radio station that is based in Nelspruit, mobilised its 1.4 million listeners days ahead of the awards, urging them to vote for Kunene by SMS-ing the letter C to an MTN number on the day of the awards.
Even people in taxis talked about voting for the DJ as the day drew closer.
"The whole of Mpumalanga was behind the KaBokweni-born muso who was nominated for the record of the year. His album title says it all, Edladleni, home. He has brought it home," said the station's marketing manager, Mfundo Ntsibande.
"Sdunkero emerged head and shoulders above prolific artists in the category of record of the year."
'Winning spirit'
Amongst those who attended the awards to support Kunene were former Mpumalanga premier, Mathews Phosa and his wife, provincial legislature speaker Pinky Phosa.
Kunene's support also extended into the house of God on Sunday where Pastor Paul Nkuna of the Word of Grace church in Nelspruit showed images of Kunene receiving the award.
The entire congregation clapped madly when Kunene thanked Mpumalanga for his success.
"Sdunkero has made us proud. He has displayed the kind of winning spirit that people from this province have," said Pastor Nkuna.
Kunene said he'll never forget the 3rd of May 2008.
"It will forever be a memorable day to me because I was able to attract the recognition that Mpumalanga province deserves," he said.
"I was more than confident about my work prior to the awards but the win gave me more joy than I anticipated."
