Johannesburg - "No, my dear, you can forget about the 'happy birthday' wishes. I don't have birthdays anymore.
"I'm past my expiry date," veteran actress and voice artist Miems de Bruin joked on Tuesday, her 86th birthday, at her house in Johannesburg.
She hates it when people refer to her as a veteran - "because I'm just another artist. What's over is over."
But the fact remains that she is currently the oldest performing artist in the country.
Just a month ago she played a role in a radio drama that critics raved about.
Hanna Botha
She does become a little sad when she talks about a recent reunion of three players of one of TV's first Afrikaans sitcoms, Nommer Asseblief! (Number Please!) which was broadcast in the 1970s.
She played the role of ill-tempered Aunt Kriekie.
"I was looking at a photo of all the players and realised that five of them, including my friend Hannah Botha, and Alex Heyns had died already."
She said that she had read in Monday's Beeld newspaper about Steve Hofmeyr's illness and became quite angry about people that put him down.
"We all have something which we hide under the veneer.
"Steve gets up to his things but people should grant him his place in the sun."
She didn't know whether she would appear as Tannie Rademan in the popular soap opera 7de Laan again soon.
