July Fever hits Durban
04/07/2008 10:56 - (SA)
Durban - It sneaks up on you and spreads like wildfire to soon engulf the entire country.
It's the annual outbreak of "July Fever" for which the cure only becomes available on Saturday 5th July at the Greyville Racecourse in Durban, when South Africa's best thoroughbreds storm down the home straight to the finish of the R3m, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July.
The cure is instantaneous, whether you are among the over 50 000 people who cram the confines of Greyville Racecourse or the millions of others who will watch the annual spectacle on television.
For maximum effect, however, there is nothing better than to be at the heart of the excitement, among the crowds who line the track, who relax in the many restaurant facilities or enjoy the day as guests in the corporate suites and the numerous venues in Greyville's Marquee Village.
With thousands of people expected on course and millions of others around the country taking serious bets or having their annual flutter, the totes and bookmakers will be under tremendous pressure dealing with the estimated R120m betting splurge.
Be sure to get your bets in early to avoid the last minute rush.
Haute couture
However, the Durban July Race Day is not just about horse racing. Like Britain's Royal Ascot, it is also known for the high fashion, fine cuisine, champagne and rubbing shoulders with the who's who.
In fact, the Durban July is the one day of the year where knowledge of horse racing is not a requirement to have a fantastic day out.
If you are a fashionista, this is your chance to win great prizes.
Flaunt your style with a fabulous outfit and catch the eye of the press and, of course, the fashion judges.
The theme for 2008's July Day Fashion is "It's a Shore Thing" - the beach and ocean should provide more than enough inspiration.
If you would like to qualify for the great prizes with your haute couture, you must be at the Greyville Racecourse by 09:30 on Saturday.
Finalists will be selected for the following categories: Most striking couple (where teamwork will be important), Male Classic Racewear, Female Classic Racewear, (the epitome of style and grace) and, finally, Avant Garde (the category where you can live out your wildest fantasy, as long as it's true to theme).
