Cape Town - Jabu Ndaba, of the award-winning Afro-pop group Malaika, has died after a long battle with TB, the SABC reported on Tuesday.
Ndaba died at Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp in the North West.
Malaika, in which Ndaba performed with fellow band members Tshedi Mholo and Bongani Nchang, won several awards including Samas and Koras since launching their career nine years ago.
Ndaba, who grew up in Bethlehem and later moved to Klerksdorp to live with his mother, started his music career as a member of a disbanded kwaito group Stouters.
In 1995 Ndaba met Nchang at a studio owned by one of the local music fundis Turbo, with whom they became partners and formed VIP.
However in 2003, the duo formed a brand new group with a whole new image, with an addition of female singer, Mholo.
The group has scooped over 15 awards, including the Metro FM, Sama, Kora and Channel O Awards.
Due to ill health, Ndaba has been unable to attend several performances in the past couple of months.
His last performance was in Australia in January.
Ndaba's funeral will take place on Saturday July 19, in Klerksdorp.
