  • Dozi's getting a divorce
  • Sanri van Wyk, Beeld

Cape Town - Singer Dozi and his wife of 15 months have announced they're getting divorced.

"We are just too different," Dozi, 42, also known as the Boer-Zulu, said of his divorce from his blonde Swartland wife, Muriël Lategan, 23.

Dozi, (Henk Opperman) and Lategan, originally from Moorreesburg, said on Thursday that their ways would part after 15 months of marriage.

"It is very sad," said Dozi. "We've been through a lot together. We had endless discussions and repeatedly searched for solutions. In the end, we couldn't bring the two poles closer. One doesn't marry to divorce, but we have to accept that this is how it will be.

    Love

"I love her very much, but we just can't live together. We're too different."

Dozi referred to those mocking him about the "mountain between them", with reference to his song Tussen jou en my (Between you and me), were being cruel and unfeeling.

Lategan said she and Dozi hadn't parted ways on bad terms. "What more can I say? We tried. We are not angry with one another."

She was already back home with her parents in Moorreesburg.

Dozi dismissed rumours of a divorce which surfaced two weeks ago.

Lategan also denied it. Both insisted she was visiting her parents as Dozi was performing in London and she couldn't stay alone on his farm in Hartbeespoort Dam.

    No third party involved

Dozi's manager, Louis van Wyk, said the couple had been trying to work things out up till Wednesday.

Van Wyk said Lategan had arrived from Moorreesburg in Johannesburg on Monday - only hours after he and Dozi had returned from London - so they could talk.

Later in the afternoon, the singer informed him about the divorce. Lategan went back to Moorreesburg.

"There is definitely not a third party involved," said Van Wyk.

Proceedings would be concluded as "quickly and painlessly" as possible.
