Lithium performs at Bandslam in Cape Town. (News24)
  • 'It's gonna be cool'
  • Duncan Alfreds

Cape Town - The crowd moved together in ecstasy as their favourite bands of an era ago banged out familiar tunes.

Bandslam was, by all accounts, all that it was expected to be - rock music, loud fans and plenty of alcohol.

The Mercury was packed as fans crowded in to watch some of South Africa's well known bands of yesteryear perform on Saturday night.

The Roswell Kings played their set to an excited, though slightly muted crowd. In any case, Cape Town doesn't really get into the party spirit until late.

Nine's set was greeted with roaring enthusiasm and the spontaneous mosh pit in front of the stage served as an indicator of the crowd's enjoyment.

The biggest roar though, was reserved for Lithium who showed no lack of energy despite the greying hair around the temples.

Playing a collection of their hits, the crowd sang along to all their favourites and News24 was repeatedly bumped to the back as some big boys elbowed their way to the front.

"I think the audience really responded well to Obituary," Ian Watson of Lithium tells News24. "We had a blast."
