Mom in child sex scandal
11/09/2002 10:45 - (SA)
Connecticut - A woman pleaded guilty this week to federal charges of arranging sexual encounters between the former mayor of Waterbury and her daughter and niece, ages 9 and 11.
The 31-year-old convicted prostitute also agreed to cooperate in the federal case against Philip Giordano, who is awaiting trial on federal charges including 11 counts of using a telephone to entice or solicit the children for sex.
Giordano's attorney, Andrew Bowman, attended the hearing this week but would not comment.
Authorities say Giordano had a long-standing relationship with
the woman, which included paying her for sex. She has told
investigators that Giordano fathered her son.
She faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1-million (R10.6-million) fine but prosecutors said they will recommend a reduced sentence because of her cooperation. The Associated Press is not identifying the woman because of her relationship to the sexual assault victims.
Sentencing is set for November 27. She and Giordano also face state charges.
