Washington - The husband of Whitney Houston was charged on Wednesday with beating her after the pop diva made an emergency call to the police from their mansion in a posh Atlanta suburb, police officials said.
Fulton County police spokesperson Kurtis Young said as a result of the altercation with singer Bobby Brown, 40-year-old Houston was left with bruises on her left cheek and upper lip.
"That's why a report was filed, and that's an issue of domestic violence," Young told Fox News Channel.
He said police, responding to a 911 call, arrived at the couple's home near Alpharetta, Georgia, on Sunday to find a shaken Houston, who told them she had just had an argument with her husband during which he hit her.
Houston is said to have given a more detailed account of the events in an interview with a detective on Tuesday.
Brown, 34, had left home by the time police arrived. But he was persuaded to turn himself in and appeared in Fulton County Magistrate Court on Wednesday to face domestic violence charges, according to Young.
"According to how the proceedings went, he did not deny anything that happened at that particular time as the charges were filed," said the police spokesperson.
Police officials refused to say what kind of punishment Brown could face if found guilty of battery.
