Cruising with the alligator
08/07/2004 19:54 - (SA)
London - A man found with a metre-long alligator in the boot of his car in Edinburgh has been charged with cruelty to wildlife, Scottish police said on Thursday.
The spectacled cayman alligator had been offered for sale in a specialist magazine, leading the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to intervene.
They said the animal was "probably quite traumatised and dangerous".
A police spokesperson said: "One man has been charged with five wildlife cruelty offences and one count of culpable and reckless conduct."
SSPCA spokesperson Mairi Ball said: "These alligators will attack anyone, they have big teeth and can grow up to three metres long.
"These are killers, not pets, they can be very dangerous. This one was only a third of its full size," she added.
The cayman was transferred to a sanctuary. - Sapa-dpa
