Kids want facelifts
23/07/2004 08:38 - (SA)
Germany - Nearly 20% of children in Germany between the ages of nine and 14 have contemplated having cosmetic surgery done to improve their looks, according to survey findings.
The survey of 2 000 children by the LBS Initiative found that facelifts, liposuction, nose jobs and tummy tucks were the most commonly considered cosmetic operations.
Topping the list was liposuction to remove excess fat from waistlines and thighs.
"Alarmingly, many girls are convinced they are too fat," said project head Brigitte Niemer. "But lots of boys are also concerned about being overweight."
The findings come less than a month after a study showed 40% of German children and teenagers are overweight and 12% are clinically obese.
Those findings prompted the German government to launch an educational programme aimed at encouraging kids to eat balanced meals and engage in regular exercise. - Sapa-dpa
