Not quite the tooth fairy...
23/07/2004 22:28  - (SA)

Answerit can help.

Eagan Williamson, Beeld

Pretoria - A Centurion family is still reeling from the shock of finding an insect in their half-used tube of toothpaste.

François Schutte of Eldoraigne said they had been using the tube of toothpaste for three days when his dentist wife, Gerda, found across the dead insect.

He said it had looked like a termite or horse fly.

Schutte said: "Initially, we couldn't understand why the toothpaste was so watery and why it looked different, but we kept on using it as one doesn't expect to find something like that inside."

After numerous calls to Colgate's help-line, the Schuttes were still unable to get an explanation.

The company later told the Schuttes they wanted to collect the tube and send it to a laboratory for tests. However, Schutte still has the "gogga-tube".

He said: "I just want to know how an insect can get into such a personal hygiene item. What if it had been a toxic insect?"

Schutte said they were still uncomfortable about the incident.

He said they had bought three tubes of toothpaste and now would battle through the remaining two before changing brands.

By late on Thursday, Colgate still had not commented about the insect.
