Toothpaste to 'the rescue'
05/07/2005 14:37 - (SA)
Phnom Penh - Cambodian prison authorities were seeking 13 escapees they said had drugged cellmates with sleeping tablets before using their toothpaste as a lubricant as they sawed through prison cell bars, authorities said on Tuesday.
Leang Sokchan, chief of the prison in the eastern province of Kompong Cham, said 13 prisoners out of 28 in the cell escaped around 02:00 on Monday morning during a change of guards.
"The others said they didn't hear a thing after they drank milk the night before, so we believe they were drugged.
The escapees used a makeshift saw and when we checked the window, we noticed the bars were covered in toothpaste, which acted as a lubricant and muffled the noise of their sawing," Sokchan said.
"The suspected ringleader is a man called Suy Seng, who is 42 and serving 11 years for rape. He has tried to escape before and is very clever." - Sapa-dpa
