Strippers want their share
05/10/2005 13:06 - (SA)
Sydney - Even mediocre strippers could earn more than the prime minister under a wage claim brought on Wednesday before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC).
Just a single day's pay for a topless waitresses in Sydney or Melbourne would be enough for a European holiday if the Canberra-based union, Striptease Artists Australia, gets its way with the AIRC wages watchdog.
Fiona Patten, spokesperson for sex industry lobby group the Eros Foundation, reckons that dancers who pay their union dues are not about to rocket to the top of the country's rich list.
"The claims are so fanciful," Patten said. "A tabletop dancer working less than 20 hours a week would earn over one million dollars a year. It would not help people working in the industry. It would actually mean job losses."
The AIRC is set to rule on the claim within weeks.
Some employers and employees have said that they will defy rates set by the watchdog - or offer enormous discounts to ensure they stay in business. - Sapa-dpa
