Stockholm - Rock group Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose got away with a fine for assault charges stemming from an altercation in a Stockholm hotel, Swedish authorities said on Tuesday.

After spending almost 12 hours in police custody, prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad ordered Rose's release on Tuesday night after Rose signed a statement admitting to minor assault of a security guard and damaging hotel property, police spokesperson Towe Hagg told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Ingblad ordered Rose to pay a fine of $5 450 and damages of $17nbsp;360 for hitting the guard and biting him in the leg.

The decision to hold him in custody, announced earlier on Tuesday, was based on "fears of flight", Ingblad said.

With Rose's release, a planned Guns N' Roses concert was likely to go ahead on Wednesday in Oslo. The band are also slated to perform at the Roskilde music festival in Denmark, which opens on Thursday.

Guns N' Roses performed on Monday at Stockholm's Globe Arena. After the concert the band visited popular Stockholm nightspot Cafe Opera and the star was reported to have had a good time.

Early on Tuesday the band returned to the nearby Berns Hotel where the altercation occurred in the hotel lobby.

According to witnesses quoted by Stockholm tabloids Expressen and Aftonbladet, the security guard was hit as he tried to intervene when Rose allegedly accosted a woman. - Sapa-dpa
