Johannesburg - M-Net's Survivor South Africa: Panama lost more than a quarter million viewers after the first episode's screening.

The show, which had a record audience of 1 254 435 viewers for its first episode, was only able to draw 1 003 548 viewers for the second episode.

For the third episode, screened last Sunday, the figure showed a slight increase to 1 080 744.

Carl Fisher, M-Net's head of local productions, on Thursday told Beeld that the subscription channel expected viewers to drop between the first and second episodes.

"In spite of that it is still higher than that of Idols and Big Brother and if the number of viewers keep showing an increase week after week, we'll be very happy."

The lack of drama in the first episode, which some viewers complained about, did not contribute to a smaller audience, said Fisher.

"We did not expect to beat the figure for the Idols final with the first episode. We're not worried at all.

"The drop in the number of viewers is normal and, because it is reality TV... at times it is more exhilarating than others."

Fisher said the reaction to Survivor SA is "overwhelmingly positive" - even the negative comments are not unwelcome because it shows people are watching the series.

However, many of the comments on M-Net's website forum are full of complaints.

"Is M-Net serious?" asks a certain Brad. "I have seen the first episode of Survivor SA and it is lukewarm. "As a Survivor fan I was disappointed in the final product - it is not exciting at all."

Another viewer writes that M-Net has broken the cardinal rule of reality programmes - to show and not to tell. "The whole point of a reality programme is to show the viewer what happens, but in Survivor all we're getting is monologue upon monologue."

The second episode did not fare any better.

There were numerous complaints of "boring editing and challenges", and bad sound quality during the row between Sam Allerton and Mzi Tyhokolo.

After last Sunday's episode some viewers are still not happy - many felt the shocking turn at the end of the programme did not compensate for the preceding "boring 45 minutes".

    - Beeld

      Bad format

I think the reason why viewers were lost is because the best contestant which will in real life be the best "survivor" was voted off because he was too strong and a threat to all other contestants. Viewers should be able to vote off the weakest contestants. That way the most interesting contestants will remain. - Gert Vermeulen

      Boring Survivor....Who cares!!!
    22/09/2006 09:57
Oh well, there were thousands of entries, but only familier faces were "chosen" for the show. WHY? Maybe that's why it turned out to be such failure & boring. - Thuli

I'm personally not a great Survivor fan, however I was interested in watching Survivor SA. What people are forgetting is that Survivor is the most sucessful reality TV show. So when Survivor SA started everybody compared it to the American one, which will happen, but hell give us a chance. Mark is different to the US guy but if you keep comparing him, it will not work. So please give SA chance. - Wayne Craig

      Too many strong personilities
    22/09/2006 10:20
I personally think that they should have chosen a few average Joe's to compliment the stronger personalities they have. That is why they lost me on the second episode already. If you want action give the not-so-confident people an opportunity. - RFP

      Guess What
    22/09/2006 10:22
Yeah, I agree. It does become boring watching a couple of people stranded on an island. Can't the producers let a pack of rabid wolves loose on the island to spice things up? 8) - Darthmoose

If M-Net does not want us to compare the American Survivor to ours then SA should develop their own reality shows and stop walking in the footsteps of other countries ideas. All the reality shows that we do are copied from other countries. Does SA not have any vision of their own. I guess not. - Bev Walker

I think there is nothing wrong in copying, but it is also better if you come with your original thing because you don't have to measure yourself with other people's standard and surely you will excel. SA I believe we are talented enough to come up with something original. CONNY - conny

      Good Luck

I am a huge Survivor fan and a little disappointed, not much excitement especially in the challenges but I will continue to watch as it is our first series afterall and we only learn. Good Luck! - Lou

Of all the reality shows (presented by South Africans) this one is definitely the best. The twist in the third episode was interesting and I must say the challanges keeps me on the edge of my seat, just as the American version... - Elsabe

It seems that all these complaints are from people who have NEVER watched Survivor. I cannot see how our show is any different (except for sound, but the subtitles are sufficient). What do people mean with "exciting"? In the first show no one even knows anyone and if you are stupid enough to rub everyone the wrong way in just the first two days then you deserve to be voted out!!!! - Melinda Scholtz

I have been watching survivor from the start and could never figure it out how the people are incompetent to do things, I always thought that it is only the Americans that could not figure out how to live from the land and now I see that it is us as well. Come one people it is not that hard to make a fire or to get food out of the see. Get someone on the show that has done a real survival course to show the word that we the South Africans can do better - t-man
