LETTER
McCartney right to boycott China
30/11/2005 11:00 - (SA)
I am in full agreement with Paul McCartney for boycotting China after viewing the horrendous mistreatment of animals that takes place there - in this case, the slaughter of dogs and cats.
Unfortunately, cruel treatment of animals takes place all over the place, including South Africa - but it seems, from much evidence, that what goes on in the East is often more extreme and shocking.
I personally boycott Eastern products whenever possible because of how animals are mistreated in the East.
I find it unfortunate that big retailers still import from China in the name of profit. They are the ones who could really make a difference.
If they refused to buy from countries where child labour and sweat shops are still common practice (another topic entirely, but worth mentioning here) and where there is no dignity or basic kindness in the handling of animals, then maybe these countries would be forced to make some changes?
Who, for goodness sake, are the buyers of dog and cat fur? Sometimes I read something that truly makes me believe in the goodness of human nature, but when I see an article like this, it reminds me that there is still so much darkness to be overcome in this world.
Jill,
Johannesburg
