LETTER
'Bring back the death penalty'

Cape Town - In recent weeks, reports of violent crime have been flooding in from across the country.

News24 asked its users to share their thoughts about what should be done to combat crime in South Africa, and this is what they had to say:

Bring back the death penalty for merciless crimes. In addition, put more focus on enforcing punishment for "petty" crimes. Once criminals see the seriousness in which petty crimes are handled, they will start thinking twice. Broadcast executions, make it public event. It will shock people into reality. We shouldn't be wasting our money on sending these things to prisons. - Jonaidoo

  • How should we tackle the crime epidemic? Answer: Start canvassing FIFA to not bring the 2010 World Cup to South Africa by highlighting, on the world stage, the real dangers to visiting fans. This is possibly the only viable leverage the average South African has. - Steve

  • I suggest that SA double the police intake to curb crime. We are fed up - Vigoluvhengo

  • I lived in a city of 600 000 people in Saudi Arabia where there was no violent crime or murder in a two-year period. The solution: Horrible-to-witness public execution that makes a criminal think twice. Believe me, I witnessed that it works! - Steve

  • I think it's about time the corrupt elements of the government and police force are rooted out because until that doesn't happen there is nothing the man in the street can do. - Zaheismail

  • If you rape - your private parts will be cut off. If you murder someone - you will lose your life, and if you steal - easy - cut off your hand! The problem with this is that we will lose a lot of our workforce due to the fact that they will only have one hand to work with, so they will be even more unproductive! To be more serious, STOP spending money on name changes in this country, and start building prisons so that we don't have to free them because our prisons are over crowded. Hope this will help ! - Pccoetzee

  • The government should bring back the death penalty. The rapes, murders will be cut by more than half as people will think twice what to do. The government needs to start looking at employing more police with better safety issues for them. They are been paid a pittance for looking after SA lives. - Gayle

  • Citizens should do something about it. This is absolutely unacceptable and all citizens should clearly communicate this as an ultimatum of some sort. At the very least organise a massive country wide strike/toy-toy and organise something that will really hurt the government, eg refuse to pay taxes until something has been done about the crime. - jaco

  • The government has to sort itself out first. They are more corrupt than anything else. The law protects criminals more then victims. I was not in the apartheid era but from what I heard, that government was more strict then anything else, so what about if they can bring back a few of those rules. - vanderwesthuisenn

  • With regards to South Africa's crime problem I think that we should learn from the Islamic states and introduce amputation of limbs for crimes such as theft, fraud, corruption, murder, and for rapists. They should have limbs amputated and be castrated. I'm sure this would make people think twice before committing a crime. - Bryw7

  • If government does not step in then the only other answer is some form of vigilantism. Aggressive neighbourhood watch, for example. Although quite why we should already pay for private policing, via security companies, and pay taxes as well as walk our own streets, is beyond me. - Lynne

  • Why not put the police on an incentive salary? The more cases they can resolve, the more they get paid. The ones who do not perform will not get a salary. This will motivate crime solving. - Debruync
