Richer schools need money
31/10/2006 12:39 - (SA)
Dear Editor,
Media reports that Minister Naledi Pandor is considering subsidy increases for richer schools in 2007 are welcome.
Schools in the poorest quintiles (40%) will be fee free and receive bigger subsidies. But schools in the more affluent areas have complained that they have been penalised because fewer and fewer parents can pay the school fees.
Consequently, the increasing number of exemptions has reduced school income and put greater pressure on dwindling numbers of parents who do pay escalating fees.
The minister is recognising the problems of SGBs. Let's hope that budgets are realistic and that the provinces will receive additional funds in 2007.
Schools can't rely on voluntary donations. Many owe money to municipalities for basic services. Present subsidies are inadequate.

DA spokesperson on Education in Gauteng
