LETTER
Let Tony be
23/01/2007 09:38  - (SA)

Want to know more?
Answerit can help.
  • Yengeni: Slaughter 'complex'
  • Yengeni may face jail again
  • SPCA after Yengeni for 'ritual'
  • Dear Editor,

What's the fuss about Yengeni? I just don't get!

Now the SPCA is on him about animal cruelty. If they want to prosecute him for his traditions they must do it throughout South Africa and the rest of Africa too!

I know it is a tradition of different cultures in SA. It is done at weddings, funerals, births and even when tombstones are erected! The SPCA should then go from township to township, but it won't helpas they will have to erase the culture of the South Africans.

If they want civil war, go ahead. Let Tony be. Focus on what matters like total banning of fire works and real animal cruelty.

    Werner van der Merwe,
    Richards Bay

    -

    Dear Editor,

The SPCA is insulting African culture. It's sad that every week the media gives space to people who portray everything related to African culture as barbaric.

The portrayal by the SPCA of the slaughtering of a bull as inhumane and not in accordance with international standards is an insult to African customs which entail very specific methods of slaughtering.

    Phillip Tshabalala,
    Kemptonpark

    -

    Dear Editor,

Please leave Tony Yengeni alone and focus on the real burning issues affecting South Africans like poverty and crime.

If you are going to arrest him for animal cruelty, then you might as well arrest 80% of South Africa!

    T Molefe

    -

    Dear Editor,

I find the holier than though attitude of the SPCA suspect. Where was the SPCA when the farmer said he shot a boy because he thought he was a dog?

They have killed what little credibility they had!

They have shown their true colours by being out of touch with where they are. In Africa, Africans have their rituals, if you do not like them simply look away. The trumpeting makes you irrelevant!

    Nonjabulo

SPCA MAKE RULES FOR SLAUTERING ANIMALS.
    23/01/2007 11:55
From now on SPCA must come up with rules not offences. - Sipho Baloyi

      why

Is MR Venter one of those who believe that Tony needs more prison time.have you pursued any case like this before or you want to start with Tony. back off. - MPHO

      SPCA vs Tony Yengeni
    23/01/2007 12:18
We are fighting a war against ?animal cruelty? globally and people like Tony are not helping matters. I think if it's true that Tony has actually committed cruelty against animals, he should be dealt with ? harshly. This shouldn?t be done to haunt him, but should happen with anyone who commits animal cruelty and there is proof for that. It has happened in the past with people who use fire crackers on their dogs, so why should Tony be spared? Tsipa Thobejane Johannesburg - Tsipa Thobejane

      Double Standards
    23/01/2007 12:21
It's not the slaughtering that's the problem, it's the stabbing it with a spear first. Would you be as supportive if they didn't take it's life afterwards? I don't think so. Because apparently it's worse to leave it alive but wounded than it is to just stab it a few times and kill it. Oh, forget it, I'm just going to go home and give my dog a good kicking before I slit it's throat. Traditions have to start somewhere... - AJ

      Double Standards
    23/01/2007 12:22
Sipho, it's better to hold your togue and be thought a fool then it is to open your mouth and prove it. FYI: An offence is what occurs when you break a rule. - AC

      Cruelty agiainst our brains
    23/01/2007 12:36
Actually i don't even know why am i partaking to such a brainless subject, i guess my heart couldn't help but to add to such stupidity. People of South Africa are sujected to idiocy that saturates our media. i am really concern about what we subject ourselves into as so called neo-nation, where in a country such subjects are discussed intellectually. If the Tony Yengeni cow saga is the only concerning issue we have in our country i think God must come and save us all. - Thoza Qwanyashe

      Let him be? No ways!
    23/01/2007 12:45
I disagree that Tony Yengeni should be left alone. As long as he holds his prominent position in SA politics, he must be prepared to face public scrutiny. Like all other prominent people. If he doesn't want to face that scrutiny, then he should leave politics (which would make me very happy personally - but that's not the point here). - Mark

      Ethics vs ethos
    23/01/2007 12:52
It is a peculiarity of SA society to appeal to ethos in order to evade questions of law, ethics and morality. It's time we put a sock in this cop-out excuse and tried to match the uncompromised ethics that are the basis of a moral society. Moral turpitude is our current problem. We'll never get near to fixing it as long as we think we have any right to inflict injuries, pain and death to any sentient creature. Put aside the 'ethos' burble and acknowledge the disgusting barbarism of this. - David Merrington

      yengeni
    23/01/2007 13:19
The article about his special treatment in jail, What if he got hurt, relates. Jail is for those who brake the law, Who protects the other inmates from getting hurt? I wich I was a corrupt ANC official, Protection from the real world all the way! - Leana

      Yawn
    23/01/2007 13:40
This must the most boring country in the world to live in. The only news in SA is politics, politics and more politics, which in turn is driven by a government with the mentality of a toddler. If it is not Jacob Zuma it is Tony Yengeni. Who cares what these so called politicians are doing? Please give us some alternative, interesting & upbuilding news!!! Please I'm on my knees before some more meaningless "politics" make me throw up.... - J Viljoen

      LEAVE YENGENI ALONE!!!
    23/01/2007 14:07
Slaughtering an animal is part of tradition in many cultures. We witness these things every weekend and I don't understand why the SPCA is crying like babies when Yengeni does it. If Yengeni could go to jail for this - it means all Africans practising their cultures by slaughtering animals will go to jail! Come on SPCA, this is not the right strategy to get publicity. - Mbulelo Mvana

I'd rather speak about these fraudster than Malan, Botha and other murderers - MPHO
