LETTER
Recognise all religions

Dear Editor,

The South African Pagan Rights Alliance welcomes the African National Congress' proposal to recognise the religious holidays of Hindus, Jews and Muslims.

We wish, however, to state that we are of the opinion that giving public holiday status to Christians, Hindus, Jews and Muslims alone amounts to religious discrimination.

Equality means in practice, equal recognition and equal opportunity. Our constitution does not apportion percentages of equality.

When four religions are afforded opportunities that others are not, there is inequality.

As South African Pagans, members of a recognised and constitutionally protected religious minority, we would like to appeal to the ANC to ensure that religious freedom and equality is extended to all South African citizens equally.

We therefore wish to request that Pagan religious holidays also be recognised.

Damon Leff,
Convenor: South African Pagan Rights Alliance

  I have to agree...

with the above, not being very religious myself, I find it all very silly anyway. My concern is that with all these religious holidays in an already unproductive country, we'll never bloddy work! - Vernon Wolf
