I disagree! 23/05/2007 12:33
The problem with Eskom is not the incompetent morons running it. It is, of course, Apartheid's fault! - Juan |

Not my problem 23/05/2007 12:44
Eskom keeps asking everyone to not use appliances and keep lights off. If they start their load shedding again it is going to lead to further reduction in productivty and it snowballs into slowing the economy and wasting billions.
I will use my heater, electric blanket, outside lights and everything I want to. I pay for this and expect the service. These fat cats in charge of energy in SA need to answer to the problems. Uncordinated planning and lack of vision has caused these problems. - Jacques du Toit |

Not the consumer's problem 23/05/2007 12:44
I can not agree with you more, Judy!! Why should the consumer have to cope with extra expense (gas heaters, generators) because Eskom is inept? Would they agree to the consumer deducting 10% off the cost of their electricity account at the end of each month - to cover extra expense and sheer aggravation? I think not. - Dee |

Not the consumer's problem 23/05/2007 12:50
Damn right Judy Maher. The fact that this was Eskom's response to the issue clearly demonstrates a lack of IQ. Eskom now resorting to passing the buck to the consumer? HAHA I laff at them, I'd laff at their faces if i knew whom to laff at. It's tragic to hear responses to things like this from the 'Authorities'. I have a sore neck from shaking it in disbelief by their "ingenius solution". They have in actual fact insulted the entire countries intelligence. Tisk Tisk, nice one Eskom. - MP3 |

Totally Agree 23/05/2007 12:54
Does a cellphone provider ask you to please stop making phone calls when thier load is too high...
Does your hairdresser ask you to please cut some of your hair yourself first...
Does your doctor ask you to diagnose yourself before comming to see him...
No they dont....
So why should the consumer put up with this from Eskom??!?!?!?!?
Does - Fuzzy |

Eskom 23/05/2007 12:57
As everyone has rights to electricity and water etc, Eskom was very glad that they electrified so many million households (service delivery) but forgot to anticipate these problems. So make it their problem not the consumers. As soon as the consumers fail to pay their accounts they are every ready to disconnect their services. - k_m |

Lack of planning = power cuts for several years to come 23/05/2007 13:02
This SHOULDN'T be the consumer's problem, but due to lack of planning by Eskom, this problem is going to get worse. While several new electricity connections have been provided (particularly to the numerous townhouse developments that have gone up over the past 10 years), no extra generation capacity has been planned. As new power stations take 5-10 years to comission, this problem is going to be with us until at least 2012! Save up and buy a generator - you'll be glad you did! - Charlie |

...and another thing 23/05/2007 13:03
If Eskom does not have enough power to go around.. then WHY are they selling power to places like Zim etc for virtually nothing? They should take care of theire own people (tax payers) and then look into charity. They truely are scum. - Juan |

ESCOM IS IN THE MIDDLE 23/05/2007 13:06
Escom is being spread quite thin in the middle! The government is the real culprit, especially minister Sabotage! We can't have more coal generators and we are going to battle to get more Nuclear Generators. There will come a time when the populace's complaints will just get them in trouble or arrested! The crisis is to big and the environment is truely in trouble! - Christiaan |

We are in the DARK 23/05/2007 13:10
Thinking back 2 years ago when areas had long period load shedding schedules... Sheesh! Can any of the theories people have about what went wrong, or maybe exactly what Eskom makes public be true? I don't think the nation will ever know. - ElectroMan |

Eskom's business practises 23/05/2007 13:11
Also remember that providing more connections without providing more generation capacity provides extra "disposable" income for Eskom! Remember that they need to pay their CEO a huge "performance bonus" every year... Trouble is, this is going to take years to fix, so while I agree with the comments above, not much is going to change in the near future! - Charlie |

Eskom 23/05/2007 13:13
Several years ago, i consulted a company that installs generators. He told me that SA will start having problems as some power stations use oil cooling.Every 2-3 years the oil needs to be replaced and the cost involved is extremely high. Now the CEO's and so on get fat salaries which means the oil cannot be replaced.also why should we save power?we pay for it.Once again shows you the incompetent the new government is! - JOHANN |

What are they doing? 23/05/2007 13:18
First they told us to switch off air conditioner while those who visited their offices told us that they were running their air conditioner. now they are telling us not "to turn on our geysers and heaters", I wonder if they are practicing what they are preaching. The best we can do for ourselves and families is to keep warm. GIVE US A BREAK ESKOM!!! - Luks |

Service delivery 23/05/2007 13:23
Just another prime example of the consumer paying the price (literally) for incompetancy. I remember being in Cape Town last year March when this whole dilemma started. And is increased electricity usage in winter a new phenomenon in our time...? Come on, a little long-term planning is not that difficult to do. The signs were all there more than a year ago. - Daniel Jacobs |

Eskom... 23/05/2007 13:23
I agree 100% - I'm tired that services in this country are deteriorating and it's never the government/companies fault.....the consumer just needs to accept and make due! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! - Silke |

disgrace 23/05/2007 13:28
I totally agree with Judy it's not that Eskom is rendering a "FREE" service so they should make a plan and fast. - Sean Cpt |

how is this different 23/05/2007 13:31
from eNatis, but on a much larger scale? why are these guys still getting performance bonuses? truth be told, these guys have been sitting on legacy systems that haven't been upgraded or maintained since 1994. in typical SA gvt fashion, they use it until it breaks and then blame the previous regime and demand that the consumer pay for it. what have they been doing with all the money we've been putting into the system in the past 13 years? Certainly not using it for maintenance or upgrades! - Anymouse |

What about 2010? 23/05/2007 13:38
What about 2010 when there'll be a MILLION more people in SA to watch the world cup!! These people come from countries where there IS electricity! What's eskom gonna do? Only alow the stadium lights on 'till half-time? The foreign media is gonna crucify us!! - Juan |

Poor Planning 23/05/2007 13:43
Its not just a case with Eskom. Looking at GP 5 years ago demand was not such a problem. But now with all the developments happening all over the bigger cities someone overlooked the fact that there would be a higher demand for Electricity, water, not to mention an increase in the volumes of traffic on major routes. - Mjavas |

Not enough power 23/05/2007 14:30
Imagine going into a restaurant that asks you to leave, because unfortunately they do not have enough food, they did not expect you would want to eat tonight... ESKOM... Don't blame us, just admit that you are pathetic, useless and worst of all arrogant about it. - Jaques |
