LETTER
BEE not behind eNatis?
28/05/2007 16:17  - (SA)

Want to know more?
Answerit can help.

Dear Editor,

According to the Tasima (Pty) Ltd website, the consortium was formed specifically for the management of the eNatis project by controlling group Face Technologies.

Apparently Tasima is a self-contained business unit operating as an independent company. Thus they are a company completely dedicated to only one project namely managing the eNatis system.

For a BEE company they have an impressive board. Johan Vorster - CEO (arivia.kom) André Appelgryn - CFO (arivia.kom); Fannie Mahlangu (Thuthukani Information Technology Services); Josias Silolo (Thuthukani Information Technology Services); Steven Webster (Webcom Consulting) and Charles Kemp (Webcom Consulting). It's awe inspiring to see so many traditional African surnames on that list.

I bring this up because the whole time I walked around with the smug impression I could blame affirmative action for this balls-up, but I can't. Apparently greed played a bigger part than incompetence in this case.

I work in a highly sensitive IT environment and we never ever, ever opted for a big bang approach when it came to upgrading a current system. As far as I know this type of management went down the drain in the 80s.

Who are they employing at this consortium? Someone should pay penalties for this.

Eben Terblanche

Now that they are not black, you don't blame incompetance but greed. cool. - m

Well, that explains a lot! During my days at Eskom, Arivia were contracted for all IT issues and they were a disaster then....good to see nothing has changed! - Matt

So this racist Eben Terblanche calls BEE incompetent???Does this mean whites are greedy and blacks incompetent??? As black as i'm, sometimes have issues with BEE but don't make such stupid comments! If these are the thinking of lots of non-blacks, then let BEE be there forever!! - Hashe

We should rather ask what was the quality of the brief to the developer. Add to that, the political pressure to roll out a big project with a bang and you are set for disaster. Not to mention the fact that the audit report was hidden - e-natisgate??? - Andrew

  Yes but...

I agree with you on the big bang approach, we have never implemented a whole system in one go either, not before some parallel testing for a while at least. However, you will probably find that the powers that be, outside of this company, who has to sign the cheques are to blame. They most likely first bought a bunch of 4x4's for themselves, threw a party celebrating their new rides, and then there weren't enough money for adequate hardware to run the software on... - Francois Roux
