LETTER
The winter of our discontent

Dear Editor,

We are now in the grip of winter. While we complain bitterly and huddle around our heaters we, unlike the poor, escape the full brunt of it. For us it is merely an inconvenience, not a struggle for survival.

It is no coincidence that there are widespread protests about government's lack of delivery just after our first cold snap, when the full reality of non-delivery hits home.

Shoddily built homes are scant protection from the cold and most have no access to electricity, relying on dangerous braziers to provide heat for their families. Hungry children brave the cold in threadbare clothing on their way to school. And yet government is silent.

Are they so preoccupied with their internal succession battles and jockeying for position that they seem not to notice the people's winter of discontent? With uncertainty around the ANC's succession debate, 2010 looming, a widespread public servants' strike, poor communication strategies, a creaking Eskom, a newly empowered DA and some very gatvol people, it will be interesting to see what the summer brings.

If some can afford to wait that long.

Angela Lang
Roodepoort
