circumcision 08/06/2007 14:04
The recent call for mass circumcision as a prevention mechanism for HIV is totally justified - it was proven in clinical trials that being circumcised reduces your changes of getting infected with HIV. I would think that under the circumstances, any possible solutions to reduce the risk of infection should be welcomed. - JM |

Hear, hear! 08/06/2007 14:04
Two people, same letter (only mine was a bit longer). I couldn't agree more, Corne! Unfortunately, people with our sentiments are often called "backward", "prudish" or whatever... People insist on their "right to free sex". - Mark |

Circumcision 08/06/2007 14:06
No one said circumcision is a cure for HIV and Aids .It haeds been prov that circumcision reduces chances of being infectected by STD's and AIDS .
Mass circumcision may reduce the infection rate ,but that does not mean people should intentionally engage in risky sexual behaviour. - Dethee |

Every little bit.... 08/06/2007 14:07
Maybe in the case of circumscision, the parents make that first "preventative" move for their sons and daughters. Anything that will help slow down the infection rate is great, at this stage we cant afford to only preach abstinence and safe sex because its clearly not working. - Justine |

Circumcision 08/06/2007 14:18
I think the writer has missed a point. There is no way where they said circumcision is cure for HIV.My understanding is that circumcision reduces chances of being affected. So if people circumcis plus take other precations such as using condoms, them we can win the war agaist HIV. - Eric B |

Open minded and Circumsise,,,,,,,, 08/06/2007 14:21
There is no cure for HIV yet, but let us be open minded and welcome anything that can help reduce HIV infections. If circumsision is "one" of those method that can be help reduce the infection, lets welcome it. South Africans, lets circumsise! - Johannes |

Circumcision 08/06/2007 14:23
I am circumcised and when I have a son he will be circumcised. The health benefits associated with circumcision far outweigh the negatives. Besides, at birth age the parent decides what is right and what is wrong for their own child. if they want to base this decision on the HIV argument then so be it. - Glenn |

Beetroots 08/06/2007 14:32
Maybe clinically this has been proven, but what message are we telling the masses - "You're safe if you are circumcised" ? Untruth, it only merely gives the male in a hetrosexual encounter, a greater chance of escaping without HIV, if in fact the female was infected and he was clean. What of the male to female infection? Absolutely no benefit. So rather teach about safe-sex than lul people into a false sense of security. - Gum |

Your not dumbfounded, 08/06/2007 14:55
your just plain dumb. Being circimsised certainly does reduce the possibility of infection. This has been known for a while and was proven in various clinical trials. Every little bit helps. - Vernon Wolf |

Circumcision 08/06/2007 15:01
Coming from the EC, I differ with this finding as well. Has this study been linked with ppls sexual behaviour?? We need people to ABSTAIN, CONDOMISE, BE FAITHFUL. What happens to our sisters?? Must they sleep with circumcised men without condomes???

Reckless 08/06/2007 15:01
Agree with Gum, it will lull people into a false sense of security and people will become more reckless. And always take those 'clinical trials' with a grain of salt. - TonkyDonk |

Total distortion! 08/06/2007 15:09
Those of us who are circumcised know that you don't go around engaging in irresponsible sexual activities with the hope that you're immune to HIV becuase of your circumcision status. We all need to be very careful with the messages that we send out there because the HIV/AIDS pandemic is just not a joke. - Kaya |

How do they come up with these ideas? Do they ask random people to write down what they think then put it in a hat and have a lucky draw to see whose idea will be put into society as law? Oh no wait, it was a 'clinical study' sorry I didn't realise 'educated' people were responsible for this. - MP3 |

Who is missing the point?! 08/06/2007 16:03
This is a mindset issue, as another user rightly points out.
Condoms prevent the transmission of HIV. The only reason I can see for wanting to advocate circumcision as a factor that reduces the risk of infection would be if the circumcised person was planning on having unsafe sex (ie. not using a condom). UNSAFE sex...
In that case, why bother with the circumcision in the first place since you're already defeating the whole purpose of mechanisms aimed at preventing HIV infection? - Wernardt Toerien |
