Phillip Matthysen 20/06/2007 12:11
A stiff fine, are you serious, my god woman he decapitated a dog with a chainsaw. Phillip Matthysen is very, very sick person. He should be removed from society, never allowed any animals again and serve the average life of a husky, in jail. People like Phillip Matthysen is a cancer in our mids. The issue of animal cruelty have ballooned hundred fold in South Africa over the last couple of years, yet our legal system is very lenient and the SPCA is a joke. - Vernon Wolf |

Unforgivable 20/06/2007 12:28
I just get so despondent when I read stuff like this. What people must remember when they buy a dog is that if you don?t put the time or effort into training it, caring for it or just give it attention, it will be like 2-year-old child. Playful, yet head strong and unaware that all it?s actions could have serious consequences. If you?re not ready to deal with a toddler?s tantrums and single mindedness, you?re no ready to have a dog. This man should be forced to do community service at an SPCA so he can face his crime everyday!!! - Brenda |

Agreed 20/06/2007 12:31
As if a dog can understand why he get's decapitated with a chainsaw. did this nitwhit ever thought of "training" his dog? And now he wants to hide away from a camera. My dog is like a daughter to me - I can't have children - so in my eyes he is a child murderer and should be judged as such. - Peter |

My baby 20/06/2007 12:32
I have a husky puppy. Her name is Shadow and she's 3months old. She has not touched one of our birds, infact, our lorikeet rides on her back. Its all down to the owner as to how the dog behaves.
This guy is sick and personally, I think somebody should take a chainsaw to his throat. Husky's have to be the most beautiful and loyal dogs. Should the husky catch a bird or something similar, as Liesl said, its in their nature.
This guy had better get a stiff sentence! - Steven McDonald |

People amaze me 20/06/2007 12:32
What never ceases to amaze me is how people suddenly get up in arms and are inspired to write letters about animal cruelty. Have you Liesl, ever written a letter about a murdered or abused child? I bet you haven't. Society is sick, when the murder of a dog causes a bigger stir and headlines than humans being slaughtered daily in this country. I do feel sorry for the animal, and the "person" who did this deserves to be punished, however we need to get our priorities straight. - Rikki |

Disgusting 20/06/2007 12:39
I agree a person like this is a disgrace and an embarresment to the human race and should be caged for a very very long time!!
If i just think about what happened to that poor animal I get outraged and it saddens me to think what that poor animal had gone thru during those terrifying last moments of its life!
Shame on you Phillip, You deserve the worst kinda punishment available and i hope they throw the book at you! - Dewald |

Murdered Husky 20/06/2007 12:44
This story filled me with revulsion & absolute hatred for this 'being'-he cannot be called human-that he definitely isn't!!I agree he should be removed from society-if he can do this to a defenseless, lovable, innocent creature of God-what is he not capable of in the sick recesses of his mind? It's frightening to think he is out there free and probably will not get a severe enough sentence equal to their horrific disgusting deeds. Can no-one see to it that these sickos get tough sentences 4 life? - Maria Kruger |

PHILLIP MATTYSEN 20/06/2007 12:45
Dear Editor, this sick person belongs in a mental institution.please keep us informed as to the outcome of this case.i cannot beleive what he has done and wish people like this would be removed from society. If the SPCA needs funds to nail this bastard i for one will donate for this cause. - Herman Gibson |

YOU amaze me 20/06/2007 12:45
Rikki. What is sick is that people are allowed to get away with this kind of thing. Murderers get some form of punishment by law. The poor animals on this planet have no form of protection. We have all done our part in helping human crime in this country, so dont say Liesl has done nothing. Maybe if we can learn to respect animals we may someday be able to respect fellow humans. That is why this world is in the situation it is. No respect for anything or anyone. - Pat |

wonder 20/06/2007 12:46
What Matthysen did is unforgivable, but I wonder why the public do not react the same way when almost 50 humans are killed in S.A. every day. Some in even more sadistic ways. - Frik |

Husky 20/06/2007 12:49
Rikki, I feel sorry for people who always bring the people vs animals issue up. If this person cannot even look after an animal, imagine what his feelings towards humans are? Animals are always loving and forgiving and need our voices to speak up for them. It also has been proven that most killers first abuse animals and then "graduate"to humans. This is exacly why our society is so sick: if you don't see the plight of animals, how can you even begin to care about humans.Remove him from society! - Alwina |

Rikki the amazed 20/06/2007 12:49
You are sick Rikki. Animals are people too. The problem with this world is that there are too many hard hearted people like you who think that because they are human no other living beings are in the equation. There are masses of people and organisations helping humans and a handful helping animals are all you can do is whine that animals are nothing and begrudge the little they get. I wonder how many animals you have eaten in your lifetime. Just because they have no voice or pto help themselves. - Eden |

In perspective 20/06/2007 12:50
Rikki, to condem one inhumane act, does not in any way mean that other acts such as child abuse will not be condemed with similar if not more vitriol. I despise with every inch of my being any form of abuse of children. That I have never written a letter about it does not mean that I cannot call for this beast with no regard for the life of a puppy to be put against a wall and shot! We should rather be grateful that this act receives the media attention that it deserves!! - Shannon |

you also amaze me !!! 20/06/2007 12:51
Rikki, you are abviously not an animal lover !If we should all start writing letters about murdered and abused children in SA,we would be busy writing for never ending. We experience, read, talk and write about it daily !Stories about what happened to the Husky don't appear in the news everyday,so it is our right to get upset about it now and then. That man should be removed from society and you should think before commenting, you are way out of touch with what is going on in this country! - gissie |

Every other letter 20/06/2007 12:53
Rikki, almost everyday there is a letter on this forum about the injustices done towards people, regardless of what it might be. Been reading this forum daily for a while now, and this is the very first mention of animal cruelty so far in the last 2-3 months at least. And as in Peter's situation, a pet can easily be a replacement to bestow your affections onto, making this a crime against humanity as well. - Brenda |

Absolutely sickening! 20/06/2007 12:55
This man is sick and deserves the harshest penalty!
Ghandi once said
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
Fellow South African's some of us are in dire need of some serious Psychiatric help.....

Rikki amazes me 20/06/2007 12:57
Humans can reason and imho are generally responsible for their lot in life.
When the life of an animal is seen as equal to a humans I will feel more for human suffering.

Phillip Matthysen 20/06/2007 12:58
After I read the article I sat for a while in total horror and shock. Sick people like Phillip Matthysen should be locked away for a long time, unfortunately under the current system he will not even get a jail term. Sick bastards like that should be removed permanently from society, preferably with a chain saw. - VP |

Parrots 20/06/2007 13:00

Husky 20/06/2007 13:00
How can one have respect for other people if one does not have any respect for God's creatures? If he is married and a father, I feel sorry for his wife and children. Because we are animal lovers does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with our priorities. - San |

Sick, sick, sick!!!! 20/06/2007 13:02
I cannot even bigin to desribe how I felt when I read this story. This inhumane person should be loked up and the key ca be tossed away for all I care. People that want a pet, should think carefully before taking such a on such a responsibility. May he get a cramp where the sun does not shine!!!!! - Pietie |

Maximum sentence 20/06/2007 13:03
Rikki what is wrong with you exactly? Can you not see a link between a person who hurts defenceless animals and the fact that someone as sick is this is most definately a danger on society as well???
Quite frankly the animals deserve all our support - and I for one am tired of the "sentences" handed out to these cruel people - they are so light - the maximum sentence is a joke. It almost condones animal abuse! we need harsher punishments for animal abusers - Patricia |

Husky 20/06/2007 13:07
I felt so sick when reading what happened to the poor dog. He/she did'nt not even understand what was happening, to think how it suffered! I agree if this is how a person reacts to animals, how will he react to a human being down something wrong. Jail is way too easy for this guy. - dogloveer |

All rights 20/06/2007 13:08
Hypocrisy still plagues our society. People have absolutely total disregard for human rights or application of it. They become volunteering blind and deaf to their surrounding and never voice an opinion through any medium on issues pertaining to human rights. Their senses miraculously re-surface when it comes to animal rights. Love all the same . God does. Shouldn't you? - Rikkibuddy |

Even more amazed! 20/06/2007 13:11
Sick Sick Sick, what is this world coming to? I am almost lost for words. I feel the same disgust at any act of cruelty, be it animal or child who can not defend themselves. It starts with animal abuse today and tomorrow he will abuse a child or person. Abuse has to be stopped. Then you get some senceless person like Rikki with stupid comments! How do you know they are 'suddenly up in arms' They probably write letters about other abuses too I know I have. Help stop abuse! - Nicola |

Husky 20/06/2007 13:14
Unfortunatly this will keep happening in our country until animal rights become a serious right in this country and these people get sent to jail, period. Revolting! 20/06/2007 13:15
A dog is so much more than just an animal. It becomes part of the family and they so desperately need love and attention. It infuriates me when I hear of someone mistreating their pets. What goes on in the mind of such a 'person' is beyond my comprehension. Mattysen should be punished for his actions and kept in isolation for the rest of his sick life. - Shivani N |

A sign of the sickness in our society 20/06/2007 13:23
Are we becoming a nation of desensitized sociopaths who show no compassion for animals and children - and each other? And how many South Africans do not consider rape a serious crime? What made my blood run cold was the story this week about a group of youngsters who were kicking a dog around like a soccer ball. He lost his hearing and his eyesight before he was rescued. It is a well documented fact that serial killers and sociopaths start out by maiming and killing animals as children. - May |

We can all change this 20/06/2007 13:31
I call on everyone to start a new trend in South Africa - one of compassion and empathy. We can all try to be a little kinder every day. I for one am going to try and make a difference in small ways. This morning I saw that child beggar clearly for the first time and put myself in his little shoes... Every little bit of kindness helps. Don't just talk about it - DO SOMETHING! - May |

Husky 20/06/2007 13:34
I am absolutely appalled by what this "thing" has done to this poor defenseless animal. I have two doggies of my own that are like my children, and having just read this just made me want to run home and go and hug them to me and make sure that they are safe. My whole being screams against what this "thing" did, and I hope the authorities give him the maximum penalty. Too bad you can't give a death sentence for something like this. I REALLY hope he doesn't have any children!! - Deidre |

Husky 20/06/2007 13:42
Many organizations in the world deal with abuse of children, far more than there are organizations on animal abuse. This country has become de-sensitized on crime and child abuse as we read about it on a daily basis. This does not mean that we do no care about man's inhumanity to man. The punishment for any animal abuse, bestiality and cruelty in this country is pathetic. The laws should be amended and harsher penalties and sentences should be handed down to offenders. - Charlene |

Stick to the point! 20/06/2007 13:46
The question here is about an innocent animal who did what was natural and suffered an unnatural and unspeakably cruel fate! It is NOT about children Rikki! Those who cringe at the fate of this dog would no less cringe if a child was given a severe beating! Stay with us here Rikki! - Peter |

Disgusting!!!! 20/06/2007 13:46
It really breaks my heart when people do sick things like this to animals. I don't think that a fine would make him regret what he has done. He should be locked and the key thrown away or someone should decapitate his head with a chainsaw! If you leave your birds outside a cage, unattended (and you have a dog), you are looking for trouble. If you leave him in society, will other pets and kids for that matter, in his neighbourhood be safe? This man doesn't have simpathy. Will someone please take his birds away before he kills them too! - Yolandi |

Husky - Killer 20/06/2007 13:53
What a sick freak.
Nothing can justify such poor behavior, do us all a favor and leave South Africa, we don?t want people like you in this country. The law should be used to the fullest extent, I recommend that 80% of all his income is donated to the SPCA for the rest of his life.

I support RIKKI 100% 20/06/2007 13:54
I support RIKKI. When parents abuse their poor 3 year old child until he dies, no one even blinks an eye. When a baby is raped, no one starts writing letters. I do not condone what this mad man has done, but also want to ask, did you also write a letter when Siebert was sodomised and killed? Killing an animal is sick but killing a human being much worse. First work on the people, then on the animals!! - Ben |

Get licences 20/06/2007 13:59
I don't own a pet BUT I will never ever kill or abuse or maime an animal of any kind whatsoever. But let me tell you, a lot of pet'lovers' (neighbours) allow their dogs to bark morning noon and night. They disrupt other people's lives, you can't study, sleep or think, they bark day and night, but that is ok, they are alone by themselves, but that is ok, their owners never walk them, but no one cares! Get all pets LICENCED and have an authority who monitor and control that -- that is a start!!!! - Bee |

Inhumane husky murder 20/06/2007 14:09
I feel quite sick just reading the article!!

May he rot in hell!! - VANESSA |

Rikki vs Husky 20/06/2007 14:09
Rikki you rbviously very out of touch w reality. This is not a humans v animals issue.Every day there's an outcry about humans, societies formed and money etc collected to help them inc the govt. The animals in contrast have absolutely no voice to ask help for anything-food,water or abuse. So many people just turn a blind eye to their suffering. If a child roams next to the road every car would stop-how many stop for lost animals? How many humans go on holiday/move & leave suffering animals behind? - Wilma de Klerk |

Inhumane 20/06/2007 14:35
Humans and animals should get the same attention - after all, we all make up this world! The bastard who killed his dog should not get a more lenient sentence than the bastard who smashed his baby's head against the windows of his girlfriend's house. The sentence for both of them should be stringing them up in a public square upside down until they die! We may start living in a better world after that.... - Mary |

Why did this sicko have a dog & parrots? Aren't you meant to look after them as you would with your children? If your 2 year old was naughty-do you just take a chainsaw and lop off it's head? This little thing didn't know he was doing wrong!!!Can u imagine what went thru this psychos mind when he did this-it's frigtening in the extreme to know he's free out there!!Maybe someone should take a chainsaw to him-but not kill him-just leave him to feel the pain & fear for the rest of his miserable life!! - Maria |
