LETTER
'We need to name and shame'
29/06/2007 16:10 - (SA)
Dear Editor,
I would like to congratulate you and your staff for bringing us stories on animal cruelty such as "Dog hanged for packet of crisps" and the awful husky pup decapitation.
Thank you for being brave when other news agencies and publications aren't. The public cares about such stories. While they are shocking to read, cause a twisting and turning of the gut, and make our heads go numb and inflamed all in the matter of seconds, we want to read about them. We have to.
Otherwise people will think they can get away with such inhumane acts of cruelty.
The justice system obviously doesn't regard these cases as important (in fact it is my personal belief that the justice system has no time to do any regarding it at all), and we, the - animal-loving and I would guess non-animal loving but still moral - public need to take a stand against cruelty. And we can.
I doubt that the Husky owner will be greeted or helped out by many people in his community any more. We need to name and shame! And not allow these people to come into contact with animals ever again, unless it is cleaning out empty kennels at the SPCA with their hands while the dogs are out. Be aware! Be angry! Be effective.
So thank you once again for having the guts and hearts to tell us about these stories, even with a backdrop of such violent crime and a plethora of "more important" human stories to cover. Keep them coming.
