Agree 100% with your sentiments 25/07/2007 09:26

Get a grip on reality ppl 25/07/2007 09:34
While it is true that this person has issues, the fact remains that there are far worse crimes being committed in this country. The rape of babies for example. Perhaps focus should be more on protecting our young and the future generations from a sick society before worrying about some dog.... Just a thought. - Drew |

Just another example of our inept "justice" system at work! 25/07/2007 09:36
This ruling is simply another slap in the face for animal rights & rights in general in the country. If this thug can afford to travel to London on business than surely R10 000 is pocket change for him? Perhaps a 2nd psychiatric opinion is needed? How can anyone who commits such an act be declared sane? He reminds nme of the freak who stuck a firecracker into his dog's rectum a few years ago,a garden variety sadist, nothing less. - lily-white |

What will it take 25/07/2007 09:37

This is sick! 25/07/2007 09:41
This man is a horrid excuse for a person. Had he decapitated a person he would have been locked up for life. I know there is a difference between a human and a dog, but the dog was still a living, breathing thing. He should be punished FAR FAR more than this. Him and his worker who assisted are disgusting. His picture should be put up everywhere so that when we see this man, we remember who he is and know not to give him any respect. - Gary |

Bad, but compare it... 25/07/2007 09:42
Yes i fully agree that his sentence is quite lean. But please people, compare it to other crimes. Babies raped, murdered. Hijackings galore, family murders and armed robbery is everyday stories. These sentences are also very light. It probably boils down to our prisons being full so they have no place for these criminals. They should build more prisons and then we would most likely see criminals behind bars again. - Rommel |

Caption 25/07/2007 09:42
The caption for this letter on the home page is:
"I have, with utter disgust, read of the light sentence handed down to a man who decapitated his young Husky with a chainsaw, writes one animal lover."
I believe you don't need to be an animal lover to be disgusted at Phillips actions; everyone can see that is actions are appalling ? and a R10 000 fine is certainly not punishment enough for a barbaric act such as this. To quote Queen Margaret in Henry VI, part III: ?Off with his head? , figuratively speaking of course. - R Sanders |

Husky and sentence 25/07/2007 09:44
Ai jai jai! Nou wat nou mense? His suspended sentce for 5 years? Does that means that he MUST NOT BE CAUGT again doing this? In my book it means he can actually still go on Oh, and by the way: I don't think the fine will hurt him, if he could afford expensive parrots (or whatever kind of bird it was) I'm sure that a total of R15 000 won't hurt his pocket. I hope burn in hell! - Me |

No justice for husky 25/07/2007 09:48
Anyone capable of commiting such a heinous crime should be immediately locked up and the key shuold be thrown away. Matthysen is pure evil and the same goes for his scummy gardener who held the poor dog down. And Drew, someone this evil will undoubtedly move on to harming humans given his sick nature. Shame for Drew 25/07/2007 09:53

Cruelty is cruelty 25/07/2007 09:54
I don't think it is valid to argue about "worse" crimes. The message is clear - one can get away with cruelty. It's hardly a stretch of the imagination that perpetrators of cruel acts against animals are more likely to commit acts of violence against people as well. To the best of my knowledge this has been researched, and indeed found to be the case. We either tolerate cruelty or we don't. In this case, cruelty has been tolerated. Sad. - Charles |

I am not defending what he done i think it is wrong but come on lets spend our time worrying about people who kill endangered animals and make a big scene like you did with the puppy. i know of a girl that got raped the other day that didn't even make the news but a puppy getting killed is? - spazman |

A joke 25/07/2007 09:59
His sentance is a joke an insult to people.
Drew just because we are upset aout does not mean that we put this crime above any other heinous crime. This behaviour was just sickening and should be punished accordingly.

To Drew and other comparisons 25/07/2007 09:59
The human race has appointed itself as more valuable than animals, God knows why, because the human race is singularly the most destructive and selfish species on the planet. There are over 6 billion of us pointless beings on earth, and all we do is suck it dry to satisfy our wants. The fact that we rape murder and mame our own and other species even further points out what a disgusting lot we are, but yes lets put animal rights on the back burner because they are inferior?? - Tennille |

Get a grip on reality Drew 25/07/2007 10:00
"Just a thought"? "Worrying about some dog"? Are you so short sighted as to not put 2 and 2 together? If you are sick enough to hurt an animal then you are sick enough to hurt humans! Where is the love in humans gone to ... the same unconditional love animals have? I am truly sickened to my stomach to hear comments about how "some dog" doesn't matter. This is where the cruelty starts. This guy (and those who have acted out any form of cruelty to another living thing) have big time karma to pay. - AS |

what about the bird? 25/07/2007 10:01

I feel sick thinking about this 25/07/2007 10:02
There is a special place in hell reserved for people who are cruel to animals. It is absolutely inexcusable that someone who has done something so purely evil isn't punished more severely, and I find it sickening that an educated person in a position of authority doesn't view this in a more serious light.
If someone could do this to a harmless, loving and friendly animal, what's to stop them moving on to people.
I hope the people involved are torn to shreds by a pack of wolves.

All Husky Owners 25/07/2007 10:03

Shame on you judge... 25/07/2007 10:05
A life is a life be it dog or human and to take it willfully is murder. The Justice system fails yet again!!!! Do we have to now wonder why crime levels are so high??? You can kill at will (or in the killer's case if your stress levels are high and you are tired) and the most you will get is a suspended sentence. To the killer I hope he is savagely torn apart by some animal somewhere and is left to suffer for a long while. - Sharon |

What an absolutely ludicrous idea to let him keep his other animals! If he can do this once "in a fit of rage",he will do it again (& yet again he will get off lightly). What frustrates the hell out me is that we have no mass demonstrations in this country against crime etc.(the masses only tend to show themselves when it is time for strike action).1000 protesting against crime is nothing,100000 & the government will start taking notice. - lily-white |

Injustice does not begin to explain 25/07/2007 10:18
For the very na? people that have written on this forum regarding bigger crimes i.e. Baby rape etc that requires more attention ? don?t you understand that people who are capable of doing this to a defenseless animal who can?t speak for himself, are exactly the type of people who rape defenseless little babies? The plain fact that this murderer is allowed to keep his animals, is just astounding and once again, the likes of Animal Welfare, SPCA and the PDSA, don?t have a leg to stand on, as one silly, ill informed judge can?t think further?
I put this man in exactly the same category as rapists and murderers, and should be put in a cell alongside them!
To say that this entire ruling is an injustice is a joke.

Justice, NOT 25/07/2007 10:20
Drew, once we sort out the relatively small crimes, like this psychopath committed, the "far worse crimes" will reduce. You have to sort out the small stuff first, and then go after what is considered the more serious crimes. Take Singapore, for example.
Unfortunately the dog-killer is not going to stop at this, and will probably move on to people eventually. It is a common pattern of psychopathic tendencies. - Bob |

Drew 25/07/2007 10:23

What comparison. 25/07/2007 10:26
Did you know that in the US people who abuse animals are locked up and watched if they are released therafter. It has been proven that people who abuse animals are just ''practising'' for when they start on children, woman etc... Also, there is no comparison and its not a ''light'' crime as some so ignorantly put it, they are not just dogs or animals they are all beings that deserve a good life and if you choose to have a pet in your life they are your responsibility to care for and protect. - Nadine |

NO JUSTICE 25/07/2007 10:32
Drew,
Crimes against children will stop when crimes against animals stop. Why can't this country ammend it's laws so that these people can pay for what they do? Justice. 25/07/2007 10:33
The low outcome of this horrific act just goes to show what a useless law system we have in this country, and that criminals are free to roam and do as they please! You can kill someone and have a minimal sentence handed to you, it's rather ridiculous and embaressing but its gonna remain this way till this country gets the changes it needs. Husky-sentence 25/07/2007 10:42
Hi,I think the judges judgement "stinks". in the first place all the other animals, dogs, birds etc. must be taken away from such a "decpicable" excuse for a man. If he can to this to a innocent animal he is capable to do that to a human being.Lock him away and throw the key away, even better, saw of his hand with a chainsaw and the lock him up, without any medical care and through away the key! Drew and like minded individuals 25/07/2007 10:49
You are clearly missing the bigger picture here as there is more to this than just an animal being killed. A very wise person once said that you can judge a society by the way it treats it's infirm, aged and animals and in this case the logic would dictate that we are a VERY sick society. We treat our infirm, aged and animals appallingly and just deflect from the issue by making comments like "but there are worse crimes to worry about" and that is sickening!!!

First off Gerry, exotic animals like parrots belong in the wild, and were not created to be used as live ornamentation for our amusement and second the dog killed to eat and acted as dogs do. Indicative of Societies Moral Decline 25/07/2007 10:54
What has transpired here is indicative of the moral decline of society. We have individuals who state that this is not worthy of a harsh sentence due to it being only a dog and that crimes committed against children and humans take precedence. ALL crimes of this nature should be viewed in a severe and harsh light, regardless of the victim. The punishment should not be passed on whether it was an animal or a human as both should be just as deplorable. - Craig J. King |

Newsworthy? 25/07/2007 10:57
AS, you state that all those in support of a harsher sentence should spend more time commenting on crimes against humans and that no-one here makes any remarks on these. Perspective 25/07/2007 11:14
I think the biggest crime is the injustice of the whole situation. "The Chainsaw Killer of Delmas" is a monster. Killing an innocent being is, I think, the worst crime to be committed. A being that trusts you, who think the sun dawns ad sets by you, and now you go and hurt it, be it a baby, a child or a pet. Injustice reigns in South Africa. And once in a blue moon, a case like this comes around, we'll shout. Raping babies and murder is in the news everyday. Ek is al lankal al hees daarvan!!! - Brenda |

Comparing Animal Cruelty to Other Crimes 25/07/2007 11:23
I agree with CJ - why should we turn a blind eye to animal cruelty because there are worse crimes being commited to humans.
The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders. - Jason |

"Is he evil?" 25/07/2007 11:27
You still ask? Are you for real? What do you call it then? Yes, murderers walk free. They should not nor should anyone walk free who kills, hurts, rapes etc etc. This is the whole point of this letter ... the punishment is not meeting the crime! This goes for humans and animals. - AS |

Who cares 25/07/2007 11:35
Who cares, its just a frigging dog. There are millions were that came from. Even if the puppy wasn't categorically replaceable, its not like it contributed anything whatsoever to the world. The really irritating bit is that, inevitably, many of you who have been expressing such outrage are all too happy to eat all kinds of meat, for which animals were pretty mercilessly butchered. You're all (well mostly) hypocrites :) - Sigh |

Get a grip 25/07/2007 11:35
Dear comfortable middle class pet owners. The cuter and cuddlier an animal the more easily you personify it, think only of seals. Four working for water labourers beat to death a recently released porcupine in the Tokai forest. Should they also be tried? This was surely a crueler and less motivated act? Is it simply that you identify with the cute and cuddly and this determines the extent of your outrage? - steve |

Justice? 25/07/2007 11:44
With the death penalty comes place for people like this in prison. If you can do this to animals you can do this to any kind of living creature. Humans included. The real issue 25/07/2007 12:00
The point here is not whether a puppy died, or a parrot, or a baby for that matter; and speculating that Matthysen might turn on women and/or children next is conjecture. Don?t lose focus in a futile debate over which is more valuable ? animal versus human life, because all life is precious.
The crux of this matter is a moral one. Phillip Matthysen acted immorally and his action should carry a consequence. What sets humans apart is their ability to decide between right and wrong. Obviously that doesn?t apply to him ...

Yes, what he did was gruesome and terrible and cruel. He killed an innocent animal. The uproar about this is out of proportion though as people have become desensitised to the daily violent crimes against PEOPLE in this country.
