LETTER
TB testing hard to come by
26/07/2007 11:47  - (SA)

Dear Editor,

I have recently had the experience of dealing with someone who works for me being diagnosed with TB. As we all work in close proximity, and my production manager drives some of the guys home, we decided that we would all trundle off and get tested to make sure we were all clear. I would cover all the expenses - easy enough?

I made a call to the local clinic to make enquiries. I told them we all wanted to come down and have ourselves checked out. "Not possible", I'm told, as this is a TB and Chest Clinic, but they don't do check ups.

I called the nearest "proper clinic". Nope, they tell me - my staff must go to clinics in the area they live. Fair enough.

So I gave them all a day off to get them sorted out. I tried to call these clinics to find out what the procedure is, in order to let my staff know what to expect, but no-one seemed to be able to offer advice. We were told to just "come".

So this resulted in my staff all having to take two days off as they were told that they should come back in the morning (after waiting around most of the firstday), as this (apparently) is the best time to test for TB.

My visit to the clinic was a laugh. I was told that I had to go to a private clinic as the clinics in my area were for "workers".

A private clinic test costs around R1 000. Not an easy thing to afford if I want to offer to test all my staff.

My point to this is this; TB is stated as an enormous problem in the Western Cape and SA as a whole, surely there could be more slick way of handling of people who wish to get checked?

I can bet that the problem would be brought into line if there was half an effort to streamline the testing and make it more easily available.

Perhaps they could introduce a mobile testing facility where one can book in advance - the facility arrives, tests and leaves. Results can be posted, faxed or emailed. There could be a "TB Section" that deals with people from wherever they come from. There should also be a system that clearly explains to people what to do and where the closest testing station to their workplace or home is.

Despite all this, I still encourage all employers to get their staff tested.

Nick Miles

  TB- Silent Killer
26/07/2007 12:14
In my community TB is also of great concern to me as a mother of young children. My issue first and foremost is the lack of knowledge people have of the desease. IT IS SPREAD VIA THE AIR. It is just as contagious as catching a cold. Therefore anyone can come into contact with an infected person i.e public transport, sportsfields, schools, etc. So, anyone coughing in your vacinity can infect you.I for one, have had my family tested regularly. It should be compulsory for EVERY FAMILY to be tested. - Responsible Parent

  Testing
26/07/2007 12:17
Well done Nick! It is great that you are getting your people tested. Testing and treatment are key to the fight against TB. Hopefully the more employers do this kind of thing and the more noise people make when things don't work, the better the chance of things getting sorted. - Mac

  Free testing
26/07/2007 12:29
its because they want everything for free. Send them to a doctor (they must have medical aid funds if you are such a good employer) and request the doctor to refer them for x-rays which the medical fund pays for. Just be careful that you don't 'impose' on their so-called rights and privacy, you will end on the wrong side if you force it upon them. - Donna

  TB Testing difficult
26/07/2007 12:30
Well, hopefully now that our minister of health has her new liver, failing that, perhaps a brain transplant might help, perhaps things will get done? Perhaps not... - Richard

  Medical services non-existent?
26/07/2007 12:35
So much for the government's ideals of withdrawing money from the academic/tertiary medicine to fund so-called primary medicine. Now all we have left (as predicted) are no medical services of quality. - Joe

  TB? What TB?
26/07/2007 12:36
Growing up on a farm in the Eastern Cape, about 25 years ago, there were mobile clinics offering tests. I also remembering clinics coming to the schools. The reality is - THERE IS NO TB! I know, because I live in RSA, where there also isnt any HIV/AIDS. I know, because my Prez and my very clever minister of health told me so. Time to eat my Afri Potato and drink my Beetroot juice. Its lunch time - Devil's Advocate

That sucks but just do what the health minister recommends eat African Potatoes and garlic. Its much cheaper - spazman

  "Devils Advocate",I concur
26/07/2007 12:59
Don't forget to use JZ's advice & take a hot shower to scrub all those remaining nasty HIV germs away (those which the veggies, beetroot & African Potato didn't kill).I hear GILL works best. - lily-white

  Med Aid
26/07/2007 13:11
Most medical aids don't pay for day to day stuff - so no doctor's visits, no x-rays. At most it comes out of your so-called savings account, but again, with most medical aids all you get out is what you put in, so you're no better off than paying out of your pocket. Medical aid deficiencies are a topic all on their own, but the point is, Donna, that having a medical aid doesn't make things any easier or cheaper in this case. - CJ

  I will fear no TB
26/07/2007 13:13
I drink lemon juice and eat half a kilo of garlic in the mornings. No one comes near me, but if they don't come close, I can't catch it. Our health minister is an unsung genius! - Anymouse

Telkom call centre vs Clinic assistance
26/07/2007 13:14
What a bungle, sounds like you were at a Telkom call centre? sending you here there and everywhere and not once somebody offering a real solution to the problem. It?s crazy that even health is put aside for procedure. I sympathise with your story. It?s another case of "Oh sorry not my problem", "I?m passing the buck", "I?m a lazy sh*t and don?t really care about your plight for a better future so I?m going to give you the address of some people that I think will give a sh*t but don?t hold your breathe..." - MP3

  TB
26/07/2007 13:25
Even though I am on medication I still worry about going to the clinic as theres always other TB patients, but one never knows if they have been taking their medication as prescribed. I've seen some very ill looking patients, even a guy with a mask as he was coughing alot. I think its dangerous when you have TB patients or suspected TB patients at the clinic where there are other people with other ailments as they could become infected. Without proper control methods the problem will grow & grow. - Jo
