Frustrated motorists have been taking photos in the traffic as they wait in the N2 gridlock. (News24 User)
  • Traffic chaos as cops protest
  • Cape motorists warned about N2
  • Cape Town's N2 barricaded
  • Dear Editor,

I have watched and listened to the diabolical behaviour of the Metro Cops and their shocking use of public property for their own means and I have come to the conclusion that sadly no-one in the chain of command has the balls to say what needs to be said.

Firstly, the basic function of these guys is to ease the lives of the commuter in some way (however small.) They are paid by taxpayer cash and should be accountable to the public for their performances.

As much as I sympathise with their cause, I must add that most increases of payment (in civilised society) is made according to one's effectiveness and value to the employer. The Metro Cops are largely seen as useless by a large and varied sector of society.

In my opinion they are a cosmetic touch on the ugly face of crime and do little in terms of effect. They do bring a visual type of security to the man in the street, but that's another story for another day (or writer).

I listened to the Metro Chief on the radio this morning, screaming at his beating around the bush on the issue. He said "there are Metro Cops conducting an illegal blockade of traffic on the N2" he said that "the police" were on the way to sort out the situation. When asked what action would be taken, he said "we will look at the situation and if the members have been found to be acting illegally, the will be dealt with."

Now he's just stated (publicly) that they are acting illegally yet he does not want to call a spade a spade, and say to the listeners that he looks at this kind of action with the most contemptuous of views and will haul these guys off before a magistrate to face a charge of public disturbance.

He should call in the army, pay the tow truck community to haul the cars out of the road and get them back to HQ and let some competent people use them to look after the streets of the city.

It seems that political correctness is something that causes men in charge to get a mouthful of teeth and lose their common sense. These guys who blocked the N2 should be dismissed immediately and the city should state that they will in no way tolerate this liberation mentality within the ranks of their employment.

It is quite frankly unacceptable, and they should know that the public have no faith in their abilities and look on their actions with disdain.

    Nick Miles,
    Cape Town

      The government culture
    15/08/2007 08:51
What did you expect? It's the culture of the people in government to deny everything and blame it on apartheid. They are incompetent and untouchable. - Sias

      Metro Cops
    15/08/2007 09:07
While one cannot argue with you too much, a question arises as to where you are coming from. What, I ask, might a "liberation mentality" be? - Zweli

      Hear Hear
    15/08/2007 09:22
I agree, they are public servants and defenders of the law, this behaviour is unaceptable and undermines any faith that the public (might) have had in them. I am unemployed largely due to AA (Pale and over 40)and as agrieved as I feel if I were to pull a stunt like that I would be slapped with a pair of handcuffs before I could say Rumplestilskin.....hmm...nuff said. - Antman

      Fire the lot of them
    15/08/2007 09:24
How can a person employed in law enforcement justify unlawful behaviour such as this? How can any of these officers turn around and fight crime or arrest others behaving unlawfully? They should be fired. All of those participating. Now is the time to for local government to show it IS TOUGH ON CRIME!! - Rob cape town

      Useless, but in trouble!
    15/08/2007 09:25
I was in the traffic on the N2 this morning, listening to Cape Talk to find out what was going on. They phoned Mayor Helen Zille as she stepped off a plane at the airport, and I'm telling you, she was so angry that if she could've sworn live on air, everyone would've died from shock! Loving it - she's going to give them hell and I hope they all get fired! - Chez

      strike season
    15/08/2007 09:27
Strike Season is open. I have an idea! I have in the past couple of months had to endure a teacher strike, coal worker strike, eskom strike, fuel shortage and today the cops are blockading the N2 in some sort of new wage negotiation technique. My idea is pretty simple, i am sure that all of these strikes collectively have cost the country millions in lost revenue. Why dont we declare a strike season? Striking for better wages should be able to only be done once a year, and only from 01 June till 15 June. That way, those of us that actually want to work for a living can schedule a two week holiday where we can all go camping. Why camping? What else can you do with no electricity, petrol etc.... - john

      EX CITY POLICEMAN, THANK GOD
    15/08/2007 09:29
I AM SO HAPPY THAT I LEFT THE CITY POLICE! THEY ARE A BUNCH OF GUNWIELDING COWBOYS WITH MAGNUM P.I. MENTALITIES! 99% OF THEM ARE USELESS, AND IT STARTED FROM THE BEGINNING WITH MARK SANGSTER, THE BIGGEST LOSER OF A "police chief" on the face of this planet.I WISH THE PUBLIC COULD SEE HOW THE CITY POLICE IS RUN, AND THE ATTITUDE OF MOST OF THE "police officers" they are like legal gangsters. i know of a handfull of brilliant officers, esp. in mannenberg area.TO THE OTHERS, YOU SUCK!!! - EX SGT M.J. RADEMEYER

      Unworthy Metro Cops
    15/08/2007 09:30
As a member of the civil service I witnessed the massive disruption caused by these ungrateful pigs who are more yobs then cops. They are public servants in an essential service, they not allowed to strike and their behaviour in using members of the public as pawns in their dispute is nothing short of reprehensible. Those vehicles are given to these officers to uphold the law on our roads not to cause chaos. As far as I am concerned they should all be fired, to the last one. And good riddance. - Warren

      Metro Knobs
    15/08/2007 09:33
I think what Nick means by "liberation mentality" is the kind of mentality that sees the disruption of the lives of the average and innocent member of the public as the route to solving their labour grievances. This mentality may have had its merits in forcing change in the apartheid SA, but really has no place today, especially not when it is being used by those we are supposed to respect and look to for protection. They are asking to be resented and not to be taken seriously - not a good thing! - Fern

      Liberation mentality?
    15/08/2007 09:50
I can understand and identify with what you are agonizing about, but what the crap do you mean by a "liberation mentality" to me you are likewise reminiscent of a bigoted racist more so from a racist mothercity! - Mdu

      PIZZA BOYS....
    15/08/2007 09:51
ASK FOR LEATITIA, WHEN YOU PHONE, YOU WOULD DIE OF LAUGHTER WHEN YOU HEAR HER EXPLANATION WHY THEY ARE STRIKING, THATS 0215961400. PHONE NOW... - M.J. RADEMEYER

You guys have said it all hey!
    15/08/2007 09:52
All i can say is you guys and the article have said it all. I totally agree with you all of you. Been a police done the job. Seen how they all operate and its a complete disgrace! - Stan

      Race issue
    15/08/2007 10:04
As usual the over sensitive of us, take everything as a race attack. (See Mdu and Zweli) Remember it is not always black and white. Don't focus on semantics and keep the BIGGER issue of the day in the forefront! - Quin

      So-called 'government'
    15/08/2007 10:05
Prior to the 'magic' date when the anc took over this country, they and the rest of their ilk made many and various 'promises,' which included transparency & honest governance (whatever that means I don't know !) . They also vowed and declared that they would not do what the previous government die. It is my opinion, based on the increasing frequency of embezzelement, theft, murder, sexual harrassment, rape and more, on the part of individuals in positions of authority, was ALL lies. - Johann Fourie

      !!
    15/08/2007 10:08
Supporting Nick Miles' position I just wish to say that I have witnessed Metro police - the so-called "Pizza Boys" behaving in the most disgusting fashion. I have seen black men being wrenched away from public phones and abused in the street and when trying to intervene have been shoved and hit. The policeman in question then turned his badge around preventing me from getting his details in order to report him. I have seen them walking in packs along Victoria road and harrassing street-people. I could go on forever. And as far as the deterrence factor is concerned, they are a joke. I have seen gangsters selling rocks under their noses and would not be at all surprised if there are kick-backs. However, that is mere speculation. I do not believe that these people serve any useful purpose whatsoever. - Shocked

      Metro "cops"?
    15/08/2007 10:08
What exactly have they done to deserve and increase? The taxi situation is getting worse by the day now they ABUSE their "power" to make sure that people that do an honest day's work is late because of them expecting something for nothing. - Lani

      Public Servants or Public Pain?
    15/08/2007 10:13
The frustration envoked by these so called public servants is nothing new. To even call them public servants is completely wrong, for u see, we serve them. We pay their salaries, and in return they cause chaos every time they want more money or perks. What do we, as taxpayers do? Nothing. We foot the bill, and government passes the buck by appointing a task team or committee.Zweli's response is typical. Ignore the problem and focus on what is meant by 'liberation mentality'. - Ivan Cox

      wow
    15/08/2007 10:15
In 10 years I have only ever seen 3 metro police cars, where have they been hiding ?? - me

      Fire the lot of them
    15/08/2007 10:17
There are very many people in this country that WANT to work. Disband Metro Police, they are useless vigilantes that have no real authority anyway. I cannot see how holding an entire city to ransaom can simply go unpunished. - Vernon Wolf

      METRO WHAT?
    15/08/2007 10:25
We are all getting sick and tired of all this circus displays. But hey? then again they have been set good examples by the chief of the metro police. What a disgrace and an embarressment! - CAROL

      Diabolical Behaviour
    15/08/2007 10:32
The crime/rape of women and children/corruption and the decline in just about every goverment service is all as a result of the anti apartheid philosophy. We will have to wait another 50 years before the goverment of 2057 will realise that they actually let the people down!! - pity most of us that read this article today will no longer be around to witness the changes. - CP

      Illegal strike
    15/08/2007 10:34
Fire the lot - same as any other illegal strikers. Culture of entitlement has got way out of hand. - Johno

      Enuff!
    15/08/2007 10:37
Just another link in this country's great long chain of stuff-ups. Safety and security, health, home affairs, education, all departments which have been screwed up by this pathetic excuse for a government. A true government puts it's peopl first, not itself!! - Zee

      Fire Them
    15/08/2007 10:38
This is a wing of the law enforcement community that seem to be a law unto themselves The either drive the N2 above the speed limit or hog the right lane. They are petty and I have no qualms about confronting them. The appear to be very badly trained and score zero in basic human relations. Rather get real police to do their job. - niels

      Metro police?
    15/08/2007 10:43
Firstly, I do not understand why the traffic department and SAPS can not be one department, which will immediately increase officer presence in general and the training can be equal throughout the department for all new constables. Secondly, I do not know why there is such a need for a different departments within the SAPS like the Metro police? If someone can do an article on this I would be the first the pay attention to it. - ElectroMan
