LETTER
21 000 unhappy matrics

  • 21 000 matrics affected by leak
  • Dear Editor,

I am in Matric at present and in the process of writing exams in Cape Town and I heard the news on Wednesday of the Western Cape matrics having to rewrite English HG paper 2.

What I want to bring to your attention is the fact that the whole Western Cape was kept in the dark for three weeks about the rewrite of this paper. No one said a single word to let all of us (the students) know what was happening. The fact that there was an investigation going on in the meantime could have been told to us to give us an idea about what was happening. But we heard nothing whatsoever.

In an official letter posted on the internet it states that they were only notified of the incident after 11 October, which was two days after it happened. I would love to find out how it is possible that they didn't know what happened.

Some really bright person decided to mix up all the papers. Which means that some people did view the paper, yes, and sure they spread it around. But this could have been avoided if immediate action had been taken at the time. They could have easily contained the problem to within the school. Instead they did nothing about it and let it spread around the Western Cape, and even other parts of the country.

So now the department has released a simple statement about what happened and that we are rewriting on 23 November. But what about those of us who finish early and are going overseas? My last exam was going to be on 16 November and I planned a trip to Egypt leaving on 22 November which is when the last official exam was. Now I know I'm not the only one who this causes a problem for.

I had no idea what had happened at SACS until about a week after it happened. So why must I suffer for their mistake? I honestly studied hard for that paper and had no prior knowledge of it. All I'm asking for here is a voice. The students who are willing to protest need a voice!

I e-mailed Brian Schreuder and even offered him plenty solutions to the problem. For example, we can rewrite on a Saturday, or just start the exam at 14:00 on a day that an insignificant exam is being written.

I am willing to fight for the department to change the date. It's not the rewrite I am fighting about, it's just the date. I don't want to only get my matric results in March because I had to miss this date. That means I can't study next year because I won't have a matric certificate. I am an A grade student and I wouldn't be making a scene for nothing. I won't even be in the country on that day and I really don't know what to do.

I know there are more students out there who are going on holiday or leaving before 23 November, so please, could someone in the Education Department acknowledge my e-mail and my desperate plea for something to be done before it's too late.

    Tiffany van Zyl,
    Bergvliet

      SUFFERING
    01/11/2007 10:43
At least you don't live in Khutsong, then you would suffer.....Another 3 weeks at school, I would take it tomorrow... - me

      Protest
    01/11/2007 10:48
I say you (and 10 000's of pupils) must just protest this and NOT go and re-write this exam at all. Its not YOUR fault that these morons messed up. The education department can't fail 10 000 people because of this, as this will affect the national pass-mark and they can't afford to look any worse!! Start a facebook group called 'Boycott English HG Paper 2' or something. There IS power in numbers!!! - Juan

      Why?
    01/11/2007 10:50
This again displays the incompetence of those invigilators/morons. It seems that they are illiterate. They could not follow simple instructions? - k_m

      Is this the 1st April?
    01/11/2007 10:55
I really hope that something can be done for the comfort of all that are affected. Unfortunately, there are other factors that are more important than your holiday to Egypt. So I pray that the proposed date will be convenient to those who work to contribute to the household, to those who have to take numerous buses/taxis, walk in rain, hail or snow to get to their exam venues. What is there to acknowledge before it's too late? U missing ur holiday! What is ur priority? Ahh..This is a joke? Right? - GP

      I hear you!
    01/11/2007 10:55
I hear what you are trying to say, but you better forget it and prepare to write on November 23. You are using up a lot of energy in this, can't you use the same energy with your travel agencies to try another departure date for your trip and also accommodation rearrangements? Honestly speaking, that's what's going to help you. The government will not change an exam date just because few learners want to go on holiday earlier. Sorry about your inconvenience! - Sello

      Barbaric behaviour
    01/11/2007 11:08
I want to now where did it surface for the first time? It must be an official from the Department of Education. Sack her or him immediately. But no, when these people commit offences, they just get transferred to another division. We have seen over the past month what incompetent racist officials they have at Dept of Education - spitting, swearing at heads of schools -- barbaric. - Bernie

      Life's a reality
    01/11/2007 11:23
The education department cannot revise their already flawed plans to accommodate the decadent lifestyles of a fortunate few. - daysee

      No Sympathy!
    01/11/2007 11:27
perhaps you should have read the small print of the education dept's rules that state that you have to be available up until the final day of the school term before planning for a holiday. it's as simple as that and i don't have any sympathy. - martin

      Alternative angle
    01/11/2007 11:31
Another angle : One of the rows that got papers got papers handed out in the following order: First Language - Second language- First Language Now that to me would suggest that the packet had a two different paper. This also says that if this was true then the fault should shift to the department for a packaging error and not an invigilator error. A boycott might work but it reality it wont work , the fear factor of people failing would scare people - me2

      Agree with Juan - Boycott!!!!
    01/11/2007 11:32
If 10 000 people boycott this re-exam, the education department cannot fail all of them. There IS strength in numbers! - Julian

      Jealousy shows
    01/11/2007 11:47
eish the jealousy amongst some writers really shows. This girl submitted herself to the exam dates etc. The DEPT of EDUCATION made a mistake, why should her vacation be postponed? You are just jealous because you can't afford a nice holiday overseas. Get a life man the black elite is getting bigger, leaving you behind, pull up your socks! - Barney

      Reply No Sympathy
    01/11/2007 11:58
I agree that one should abide by the rules, you won't get any sympathy from EducDept. But this is no excuse for the wave of incompetence that we see not just on school level. The message it sends out is - It's ok to mess up - just blame somebody else! - especially if no punitive action is taken against the guilty parties. Wrote Unisa exam this year and according to feedback from others there were 3 dif versions of the exampaper. I also refuse to rewrite. - Incompetence rules

      shame on them
    01/11/2007 12:01
The problem should have been tackled at SACS, everyone who was involved in opening and exposing the exam to the learners should be seriously taken to task. I sympathise with the learner above because she has obviously studied, and is now being punished along with many others for the stupidity of a few. Don't begrudge her the trip, you don't know whether she has worked for it or not. - she-girl

      Welcome to the Real World!
    01/11/2007 12:03
My heart goes out to you and many more youngsters, entering the real world. Lesson number one- the innocents will always pay for the mistakes of incompetent,ANC appointed, government officials. - Devil's Advocate

      life's a reality
    01/11/2007 12:05
ya, GP, daysee and Sello, everything automatically boils down to being priviledged. I was in matric in 1993, government school, I might let u know, and after matric, I went to Europe for a month. I worked every weekend for 3 years.... does that make me priviledged?, no just hard working! - she-girl

      Join the real world
    01/11/2007 12:15
Stuff happens! You must learn that, because when you are out in the "real" world after Matric, you have to deal with things not going how you want them to go! - Jerry

Support the matrics - they are stressed enough already
    01/11/2007 12:24
Reading some of the comments to this poor girl's letter make me sick. Who are you to sit in judgement on her plea to have the date moved forward? She, and other thousands, have been studying very hard, stressing out, freaking out, and now they have to go through it all over again! A lot of students leave the country after their final exams, or move on - they don't want to have to now sit around and wait, putting all their plans on hold, wasting money, because some idiot invigilator messed up! - Chez

      Cut her some slack...
    01/11/2007 12:35
Het Sello and Martin, cut her some slack. One often needs to book and pay for tickets well in advance and changes to dates if possible at all incur penalties. As I read it her last exam is on the 16th and she does not leave until after the official end of the exams on the 22nd. I'm sure that the Dept has the necessary fine print to cover up for their incompetence but this in no way excuses them at all. - Gail

      Tougher issues...
    01/11/2007 12:37
It's a bummer - agreed. But really guys, there are going to be far tougher issues for you to deal with in the future, this is the real world. If you know your stuff, then rewriting the paper should not be a problem. Write it and move on. Hey I wish I had the opportunity to rewrite some of my papers! Good luck. - Nick

      Ancient Egypt
    01/11/2007 12:40
will be there for more decades. Change the reservation, or fligh in later I'm affected too, we planned the Matrik Naweek. My friends who are on 2nd language showed me their support and they will waite for me and we will all leave together, just a day later. - tj

      Exams
    01/11/2007 12:46
What would an "insignificant" exam be? Just because Tiffany isn't writing a certain subject, doesn't mean the exam is insignificant. And who cares if matrics boycott the exam? The standard is so low anyway it won't make any difference whether they write all the exams or not. All I can say is: I'm sure glad that I finished in 2001! - Shannon

      Its the new SA
    01/11/2007 13:04
Burn down the school and block the roads , That the new way of comunication in SA , and you get wat you want !! - Bongani

      They should mark the papers
    01/11/2007 13:20
The education department should mark all the papers already written in the WCape. There are many statistical methods to indicate who saw the paper before writing it. If a person scores say 15% higher than his year mark, or the average mark in certain geographic locations are significantly higher than last years, the affected pupils could either be called on to sign affidavits that they didn't see the paper beforehand. If they lie and are caught they will have criminal records. - Fran
