  • Rocky start to schools' opening
  • Dear Editor,

I took the little one to the first day of school and she was so excited about the opening. It is her fourth year in the same primary school and she was so excited when she saw all her friends and they were talking about their holidays.

It was such a nice feeling to see how our children love each other. She was standing with two Indian girls, one coloured girl, one white girl and two black girls, all talking the same language.

But when we all went to assembly, our children were very confused when they were told the school has not decided what is going to happen with their lessons.

Sometime last year the school sent us a letter stating that they are introducing N Sotho, Zulu and Afrikaans to the school and each parent should choose two languages for their children to learn.

Apparently some parents were not happy with this did not complete the forms. To my surprise, the school did not do anything about the matter up until today when our children arrived.

The school has promised to sort the matter out only at the month.

Why didn't the school address this before the December holidays? Who comes up with the language decisions? Is it the school or the government? As parents, we are very disappointed in the manner in which the primary school has handled this.

    Dineo Matjila,
    Midrand

Good move, but it appears the school was in a sudden rush!
    10/01/2008 15:33
I think the school picked a good move there, my kids will not go anywhere where they wont be taught in their vernacular. I think what the school did wrong was to introduce the language classes very late. You need two years to prepare for the introduction, to inform parents in time, and to get relevant teachers. The school was just in a rush. - Sello

      Parents
    10/01/2008 15:44
I might have missed something here, but what exactly were these parents unhappy about that they didn't fill in and return the forms? They had the option to choose what language their children should be taught in, strange to find somethign wrong with this. - VLS

      Language in Schools
    10/01/2008 15:49
English should be the Primary Language in ALL Schools I believe. Then a secondary language should be selected for the children based on Geographical location. You cannot have all 11 official languages as an Option. My reason for English being the Primary Language is because the World over, English is the Business Language of the World. Having any other language as the Primary language would only give the child a set back later in life. - Jhazz

      Some people...
    10/01/2008 15:52
How can a parent be upset about their child getting the opportunity to learn 2 more languages? Is'nt that supposed to be a good thing? It will lead to much better communication in the future and will be a step in the right direction. - LB

      Govt (Ministry of Education)
    10/01/2008 15:57
determines the language policies at schools. They have the final say and they push schools to make choices although the current status at those schools had worked well. The Minister of Education and its officials should stop playing politics and stop interfering in schools that produce good grades and good integration, they always have to politicize everything. The kids are all friends and happy to speak the same language . then along came the Govt stuffing up everything! - Naledi

      less complicated
    10/01/2008 16:29
I agree with Jhazz! I think all schools should be in english with a compulsory 2nd language of your choice. This will make things less complicated for everyone, and in this way all kids will be able to maintain their native tongue and be able to meet international requirements. - agree with jhazz

      Language in Schools
    10/01/2008 16:33
Jhazz you are wrong. A Chinese language will be the Business language of the future if you want to give a head start to your children while they young. My primary school children get taught in Afrikaans, but because they are in a double medium school with all races. They speak English better than the British people that stayed their whole life in SA can speak Afrikaans. - Patriot
