LETTER
A disaster at the box office

  • Just imagine
  • 'I felt something on the floor'
  • Dear Editor,

Is any one else completely disinterested in going to the movies these days?

I used to regularly watch movies - particularly all the major features - but I can't recall the last time I set foot in a cinema.

There are a variety of reasons for this I think. Firstly, and most commonly cited as a reason, is the price of movie tickets. I'm not sure if it's gone up since I was last there, but R25 for a ticket is steep when you consider the quality of some of the movies you land up seeing. I know loyalty programmes often give their customers discounted tickets, but I find loyalty programmes to be a complete waste of money, so I don't get to make use of the discounted "loyal customer" prices.

Similarly, it's not just a movie ticket. It's something to eat or drink and parking fees as well. And these fees may be small in isolation, but they all add up to an amount that I think far outweighs the value of the experience!

Secondly, there seems to be a lot of poor quality films on circuit these days. Art house films notwithstanding, actually being able to find a movie showing on circuit that looks to be worth the price of a ticket seems a rare occurrence!

Thirdly, the usual complaints about poor service, noisy patrons and expensive in-house cinema food still apply here. You get grossly overcharged for anything you buy in-house, and you're forced to do so if you want to have something to snack on during the show.

These rules often get taken too far as well - I was once forced to leave a polystyrene box of food left over from dinner at the manager's office because the people at the door were under strict instructions to not allow any food from outside the cinema beyond the door. Even when I pointed out that it was pasta, and I had no fork or spoon to eat it with, they continued to insist I leave it with them or leave the cinema. I landed up throwing it away.

Finally, I know that a lot of cinemas (at least in the Western Cape where I live) have slowly been changing their screening times so that they have a show starting around 19:00 and one before 22:00. Now I used to be able to grab a bite to eat before the 20:00 movie, but even if I manage to leave work at a reasonable hour, it's just too much of a rush to get everything in after work and before the movie starts. I'm not sure why they started showing movies earlier and earlier, but it doesn't suit my - or a lot of my friends's - schedule at all.

Am I the only one noticing this? Do other South Africans out there feel a similar disinterest in going to the movies these days? Surely movie houses need to pay attention to the wants and needs of their patrons? Perhaps they've become far too comfortable in thinking that movies are such a draw-card that they can do and charge as they please?

Movies just aren't fun, convenient or interesting to go to any more!

    Staying at home,
    Cape Town

      I agree
    15/01/2008 12:41
i stopped going to the movies years ago. I would rather wait for the DVD it doesnt take that much longer to come out on DVD these days and I dont have to put up with people answering cellphone calls in the middle of a movie or talking and childish giggling during more serious movies and the distracting light of someone's cellphone while they sit typing out sms's during the movie and and and....also the price of the popcorn/drink/smarties plus the ticket prices would allow you to BUY the DVD! - Panda

      Rats
    15/01/2008 12:44
Well, I always check the reviews on imdb.com before I see a movie. I have stopped going to the movies for another reason altogether... All the reports on RATS in the cinema. No thanks, I will rather watch a movie in the comfort of my own home... - Chris

      *yawn*
    15/01/2008 12:46
Last Tuesday i went to a movie with my girlfriend and it cost us a total of R17. This letter seems to have been written about two years ago and rehashed here. Research the facts before you waste our time. - Wayne

      Join Edgars Club...
    15/01/2008 12:49
get yourself a benefit card and you will only have to pay half price at Ster Kinekor (R20 at Classic & R10 Junction).I still enjoy the movies but I have to say the Pavilion's cinemas are looking shoddy lately. One has to also really choose your movies very carefully these days as the quality of movies has really dropped (nothing worse than having forked out R20 to watch crap like "I Am Legend",a big disappointment for me).Aside from that one has the usual cellphone etc. annoyanances to handle - The Truth

      movies
    15/01/2008 12:56
Frankly, the reason I don't go to the movies is because of people like you who feel they must snack during the show. Rather than be irritated to a frazzle by munching and crunching sounds, I rent or buy a video. - taurus

      @ Wayne..
    15/01/2008 12:56
I agree bud, I live in Waterfall and the movie house next to us is so cheap and quiet it's a pleasure to go watch a movie there. For my wife and I it cost us the same as renting a DVD - we would still need to drive to the shop to rent it and then drive back to take (in the same centre as the movie house) it back, buy popcorn, etc - works out the same. Easier just to go and watch it on a really big screen :) - Stolen ID

      Sterkinekor
    15/01/2008 12:57
I dont bother with Nu Metro, but Sterkinekor Classic is R38/movie. It's a joke. Hell, nowadays my wife and I just wait for the DVD. And people wonder why counterfeiters continue to make money? - celery

      Why go to the movies
    15/01/2008 13:00
When you can watch the DVD at home. - Sinudeity

      My last movie
    15/01/2008 13:05
Mid 2007 a friend paid for the tickets and I bought the snacks (R120 for two boxes of popcorn, two cold drinks and a few chocolates). The time before that was to see Black Hawk Down - there were 8 people in the theatre and the sound was so loud I sat with my fingers jammed into my ears for the entire show. Since then we'd rather wait till the movie comes out on DVD or is on DSTV and watch it in the comfort of our home with snack of my choice than spend R250 on a "movie". - Jack in the Box

      I agree
    15/01/2008 13:06
I totally agree. Also, the vloume is most alway s too loud, the aircons too cold and to take a small little family of three to a movie on the East Rand, cost about R140 bucks! Rent a dvd, adjust the volume, lights and heat to what is comfortable for yourself, and save lots and lots of money - plus have the convenience of your own bathroom handy. - No more movies

      Movie pricing
    15/01/2008 13:08
How very true. There are very few movies of exceptional quality being released that justify the price of a movie. Someone mentioned watching a movie for R17? A recent jaunt to see I Am Legend at Tygervalley's Classic Ster Kinekor cinemas cost my girlfriend and I almost (if not exactly) R80 in total. This was beside the obligatory (for me anyway) popcorn and soft drink purchase for during the movie snacking which added another R40 or so on top. Is Jimmy Manyi in charge of Ster Kinekor as well? - Nathan

      Snacks
    15/01/2008 13:10
Ticket prices have come down nively for junction cinemas which is where I go. But food is still ludicrous. R40 for two drinks and one popcorn to share??? I used to buy snacks every time I watched a movie as they where reasonable. Now I never do as its overpriced. It costs them under R1 to make a cup of fanta from syrup and about 80c for a large popcorn. Justify the R40 to me when it cost them under R3 for the ingredients. - Michael

      Don't go then
    15/01/2008 13:10
If it is such a hassle for you to go to the movies, don't go. There are good movies around and there definitely are ways to get a cheap movie ticket. And no, I don't think R25 is too much. You can easily pay R80 for a meal and drinks which you stuff in your mouth in a few minutes. All Nu Metro movies are now R25. If you join the Edgars Club you can watch a movie for less than R20, even at the Ster Kinekor Classic complexes. However, I agree that the snacks are a total rip-off. - Gloria

      Agree
    15/01/2008 13:10
lat time I took my wife to a movie its cost close to 100 bucks , they may ask you 17 rand a ticket as wayne says but they make that up at the sweets counter , Home entertainment system ins the answer !! - bongani

      Movies
    15/01/2008 13:15
We hardly ever go to the movies anymore. I find that the prices of the refreshments sold are way too expensive. - Drifter

      Cavendish
    15/01/2008 13:21
I also paid over R40 per ticket to go to watch I am Legebd at Ster Kinekor classic, supposed to be a rank up on the other cinemas. The seats are no larger than your naormal cinemas, there is no holder for your popcorn, the carpets are sticky with old filth and the front row is occupied by tweens on their cellphones NO THANK YOU CAVENDISH - BYE BYE - Beemer

      Edgars Club
    15/01/2008 13:22
Why must we join Edgars Club to watch a cheap movie - Edgars Club is just another rip-off - Beemer

      Another angle
    15/01/2008 13:25
I have it about the quality of movies these days. Not so much the filming - and visual quality, but rather the story lines and the soooo predictable endings. Fact is the film industry rediscovered the B-movie format of a few decades ago, and with a bigger budget these days and not too much muscle, they take us all for a ride. "National Treasure" is one of the current B-movie format rip-offs that comes to mind. I love the old B-movies (40's to mid 60's)and I am a keen collector thereof. - Jack The Beanstalk

      prices are ridiculous
    15/01/2008 13:25
i agree completely!!! thankfully my girlfriend and i can go to nu metro hyde park and watch movies for "cheap" (r25 a ticket) and get popcorn and a drink for about r20. sterkinekor on the other hand is a rip off!! r43 a ticket at sandton and about r30 for same size popcorn and drink. well done to nu metro for keeping their prices down and shame on sterkinekor for continually ripping off the consumer. no wonder they not as busy as nu metro. - roy

      Also staying at home
    15/01/2008 13:25
I was always at the movies but am in total agreement with the writer of the letter, the cost of the movies (for poor quality), the price of drinks etc and the most irritating of all the cellphone users and those that do not respect you by either talking during the movie or jumping over the seats and sitting like they are on the beach. We have now opted to wait for the DVD and enjoy it in the comfort of our own home even though we are part of a loyalty programme. - Diana

      DVD ...
    15/01/2008 13:26
Thats what i prefer, i can even rewind to see bits i missed or didn't understand, pause when i feel like some food, hell i can roll & smoke a joint while watching.... - skarr..

yesterday you said you dont own a TV so how will you watch your DVD my man - me

      the entire experience...
    15/01/2008 13:38
when i was a kid, cinemas were a really special treat. Now, besides the kaka movies, the rest of the experience serves only to annoy me. All that popcorn crunching, wailing babies, teens getting lusty, cellphone lights and sound, lifting knees for late-comers, dirty seats...it all sucks. That aside...the rude service. I mean the staff don't make out for the 'leisure-experience' thing. Few smiles, policed ticket check, and projectionists who take no pride in their work. DVD any day - tom

      don't agree
    15/01/2008 13:38
piece of advice - read the reviews of a movie before you go and pay to see some random crap. Sterkinekor Classic is R20 on Tuesdays, with a Sterkinekor card, which also gives you credits when you use it. The Edgars Clubcard is also R20 per ticket on any day. You can also purchase 2 tickets on the Edgars Card. I'm no fan of Numetro, but some cinemas are dirt cheap, like Hatfield in Pta. otherwise wait for the dvd! - sam

Spice up your lives good people....
    15/01/2008 13:46
The good thing about the whole movie thing is romance..the fact that you could get out of your usual home and take your family out is just romantic and fun...A family outing my critical friends..be romantic just once and spice up your relationships with just R100..for a movie and snacks.the cheapest and most romantic date you can find.. - romantic

No one forces you to go to the cinema ...
    15/01/2008 13:47
... but true cinema lovers will tell you that it is just not the same watching certain films on smaller format TV screens. R25 is NOT expensive in comparison with what people splurge at e.g. McD's. Thank goodness for expensive food, as there is nothing more irritating than munchers and rustlers. If there are noisy people - complain to management - it is their job to make sure you enjoy your experience you paid for, else ask for a refund. - outsidr

      Its a pity
    15/01/2008 13:54
that Sterkinekor/Nu Metro dont actually pay attention to what their client-base say. Then again, if I look at how many people go to Sterkinekor Cavendish on any given day, they dont really have to. People are happy to accept the Mushroom Treatment. - celery

      Better experience at home
    15/01/2008 14:00
With the large LCD/Plasma screens and 5.1 dolby equipment now available for most people to install at their homes, there really isn't any need to go to the cinema for "the experience". - Doug

Let them know with your feet
    15/01/2008 14:00
Lamenting about poor service, rats and ridiculous prices is good. However, staying away from these cinemas and letting them feel it in the pocket is most efective. Stay at home and wait for the DVD's release...at least until they sit up and listen. South Africa companies need a kick up the rear when it comes to service...and quite frankly consumers are to blame. We settle for less!!!!! - Jen

      Isolate the issues
    15/01/2008 14:00
Reality check: If you cant spend R25 (all nu-Metro cinemas) and R8 parking then you probably should not be paying R15-R20 for a DVD either. Movies are cheap compared with dining out, even at the Spur:) I agree with the expensive in-house food, but dont blame the industry for a specific facility's bad service. The whole "DVD in the comfort of my own home" argument is so typical of our society where no effort is put forward for anything. Nothing compares to a good cinema experience and you know it. - Liaan

      Also disagree
    15/01/2008 14:02
I reckon ticket prices are fair - compared to say spending 5-10 times that out to dinner. I gather little to no margin is made off tickets; it all comes from the snacks. If you really must stand in long queues and buy oversized, watered-down soft drinks and fattening junk, then you have yourself to blame for wasting cash. Also, as one ages and the ennui sets in, similar-quality movies are invariably going to seem worse than they did when you were an easily-pleased kid. That's just human nature. - Thor Harley

      say what
    15/01/2008 14:11

forget about nu metro or ster kinekor. you guys must do yourselves a favour by joining Mr Video.. they have the latest DVD's, some not on circuit yet! they're called Zone 1 movies. cost u abour R20 a movie.. straight from the movie studios, so no need to wait for 6 months to go on DSTV, then 3 months to normal DVD. - discovery

      Re:
    15/01/2008 14:13
Hence the rise in "illegal" downloading. Its like I have always said, people wouldn't need to download movies and music for free if the actual products were better and more affordable. The entertainment industry is suffering as a result of its own greed. - Sean

      The end of cinema's
    15/01/2008 14:14
As soon as SA's broadband is better we will also be able to download movies as the rest of the world is doing. With Dvd'd etc I think cinema's is going to go the do-do road like drive -ins. A good action movie on the big screen is best and I hope hope cinema's get their act together other wise it will die a slow death. - Me

      Waste of time and money...
    15/01/2008 14:21
Besides all the reasons you mention, I have some others that I have boycotted movies for: 1 - Patrons insist on using their cells, talking and sending/receiving SMS's. 2 - Some arsehole insisting on sticking his knees into the back of your seat. Who wants a confrontation everytime you go to the movies? 3 - The idiot in the corner that has to pee every ten minutes 4 - The clot behind you that is yelling her friend about her ex. Who needs the movies? The DVD is out soon enough.. - Trevor Gantry

      Perspective
    15/01/2008 14:23
South Africa has some of the cheapest cinema prices in the world. The vast majority of other nations have no loyalty club rewards or Half Price Movie Tuesdays. While Americans are paying $10+, we're seeing the same film at the same time for $2-4. Be grateful... Or be boring and stay at home with your DVD player. - pfan

      You right Skarr
    15/01/2008 14:25
You got that right Skarr, Nothing better than hitting a joint in the comfort of your Plasma and 5.1 Dolby surround sound. Why should I stress at a cinema always shushing rowdy and noisy teens. Most nice movies take just over a month to come out on DVD. - Rizla

      Liaan...
    15/01/2008 14:28
I see ur point, going to the movies for me was an experience & a good exeprience @ that, but like Doug said, with 21st century technonolgy i get a better experience @ home. i pay 25 bucks & i even get extras too like special features on a DVD, i can even watch the movie twice. - skarr..

Try the Labia in Cape Town
    15/01/2008 14:37
The new theatres in the centre on Kloof Street are great. You can have a glass of wine, the tickets are much cheaper, and they show an excellent mix of films; no over-hyped crap, but not pure art house either. A very cosy - and pleasant - movie-going experience. - Amanda

Not that expensive, and do something about the other problems
    15/01/2008 14:40
I also don't think the price of movies are expensive. And you don't HAVE to have snacks, sneak some smarties in your handbag if you must. Its your own fault if you go to a movie you didn't like - why didn't you read or watched reviews? As for anyoing patrons - maybe figure out when there is unlikely to be many people (early morning, late at night) or politely ask them to stop, failing which, loudly complain - embaress them (it works)! And complain to the cinema about dirty seats and floors. - SM

      Also disagree
    15/01/2008 14:43
I agree with Thor Harley et al. oe's tastes change with age. To claim that movies these days are not as good as older ones is just stupid. There is some crap as there was back then but it is up to the individual to watch what they want to watch. For the record I enjoyed I Am Legend. Read the reviews before watching movies so you have a realistic expectation. - VLS

      Waste of Time and Money
    15/01/2008 15:03
I don't know how Wayne managed to get into the movies for just R17-00 for himself AND his Girlfriend... I only go when I take my Kids... I have a Ster Kinekor Gold Loyalty card... It costs about R120-00 fro the tickets... 2 adults, 2 kids, then another R150-00 on top of that for popcorn, coke and sweets... That's if you go to a SK Junction, classic costs you more... The Movie Screens are a fraction of the size they used to be, and the projectionist always seems to cut half of the picture off... - Fed Up

    15/01/2008 15:08
Ppl in SA are always too quick to complain about the lack of service, but, when the vendors put a price on decent service, we still complain. I believe in good service delivery... if it has a price, I choose to pay it. If anyone has an issue with the price... go elsewhere. You are not obligated to any particular cinema, nor are you forced to buy snacks!!! - GP

Me and the wife regularly go to the Movies, at least 3 or 4 times a month and I think its the best thing for a relaxing night out.       The price is not the problem....
    15/01/2008 15:21
The people in the cinema with you are. You either get kicked from behind constantly, or you have to listen to the nearby idiot crunching or talking through the movie. Also parents seem to think the movie cinema is the ideal babysitter for their kids and leave the illmannered brats in the cinema by themselves, and collect them after the movie. The problem is breeding dears, breeding....... O, and Liaan if you consider going to the cinema a good experience, you really should get out more. - Embee

    15/01/2008 15:29
I stopped going to Eastgate movie houses when I was continually faced with out of focus movies, bad sound, broken seats and been "mugged" when buying a drink or snack. Also, it is a lottery at Eastgate because not all the movie houses are equipped with 5.1 sound. With Video on demand about to be launched on DSTV and with DSTV now broadcasting movies in 5.1 and DVD's coming out sooner and sooner I find it hard to motivate myself to that once most pleasurable experience of going to the movies." - Rob Bothma

      I disagree too
    15/01/2008 15:38
I have a 42 inch plasma screen at home, and surround sound, but I still go to the movies for the whole experience. Its the same as cooking food at home or going out to eat, you go out for the experience and relaxation. Also, I go with my husband and we buy a combo 1 at Nu metro so our total bill, parking included, comes to less than R80. I'm sorry but DVD's just don't cut it sometimes. - Tanya

Ok, all valid comments etc, but lets face it that when it comes to home cinema, the main motivating factor is not cost at all: A good home cinema setup will end up in excess of R10k to R15k if you are to have anything comparable with a cinema. This works out to 400 to 600 movies at R25 a movie. - Liaan

mainly because of inconsiderate gits who sit in front of you, checking their mobile phones every few minutes to make sure that they don't miss anything. their constant need for validation this way really gets up everyone's nose. if you're that worried about missing something important on mxit, you shouldn't be in the movie in the first effing place! - Anymouse

      here's a tip

buy one of their large boxes of popcorn, eat or throw most of it out and then take the rest and glue it into a small pile on top of a piece of card roughly the same size/shape as the inside of the box. Now place any food or drink you want to in the box, and place the card with popcorn-pyramid over it. Looks like you're carrying a full box of popcorn. Or buy a bottle of water the same make as what they sell and take it in, we've never been stopped. At their usurous rates, they must expect this. - Anymouse
