'I am sick of police brutality'
10/03/2008 10:42  - (SA)

A screenshot of the CCTV footage of the police raids in one of the nightclubs shows the actions of several policemen.
  • VIDEO: Stellenbosch CCTV Footage
  • Maties tell of cop terror
  • Dear Editor,

I am sick and tired of police brutality.

I started my weekend hearing about a friend of mine who was unlucky enough to have a "dispute" with a high ranking police official at an upmarket night spot in Johannesburg.

Needless to say the dispute turned ugly as the cop chose to use big bad friends leaving my mate with little recollection of the beating he received.

I was further angered after seeing footage of a supposed raid in my hometown of Stellenbosch. The video leaves in me in no doubt that this was no raid but rather a hate-filled attack on generally helpless victims.

It is pretty sickening to see how the "protectors" of the law run riot whilst the general public can do little but try adjust to the confusion of shotguns ringing around them and not to mention needless amounts of pepper spray applied directly to the faces of some!

I understand that drugs were found on the scene at some of the locations but were unattended thus no one can be prosecuted. So why the excessive violence?

Stellenbosch is a student town, obviously there are bad elements going on and policing is necessary but how many people in the three clubs that were raided were just out having a night on the town?

In the footage one can clearly see crowds gathered on the floor after complying with the instructions of police, they are later revisited and a female is seen being pepper sprayed directly in the face despite being on the ground and then when she struggles to her feet, she is knocked back down with force! How can that be allowed?

Police are at times out-and-out saviours and many people owe their lives to their heroic deeds, but this kind of brutality is nothing short of cowardly. What is worse is that they confiscated cameras and cell phones of people who recorded the pandemonium.

The footage on the internet is now alive and well though and questions need to be answered!

    Ricky James

      SCUM!!
    10/03/2008 10:49
I am at a loss for words! We pay these policemen's salaries through taxes, and this is how they treat us!? I am absolutely revolted by the police action. If a legal fun is set up to prosecute these barbaric policemen, I would GLADLY contribute towards it!!! Police shouold be TAUGHT that they are not above the law!!! - Juan

      Disgraceful
    10/03/2008 10:55
and the type of behaviour you would expect in a lawless society. I urge those unlucky to have been subject to this rot to lay charges. It is on video, not your word against mine, something will have to be done. - John Camp

      Police work
    10/03/2008 11:00
I would like to commend the police force for raiding these nightclubs and seizing drugs. We should stop being hypocrites and give praise for the policemen action. The drunkards are a liability to society because they cause accidents on the roads after clubbing. In order to arrest the rate of accidents caused by these irresponsible revellers, the police should monitor these clubs which are a haven for druglords on a regular basis. - Calvin Mkhize

Uhmm, sorry to interrupt your quiet night out...
    10/03/2008 11:01
but could you please be so kind to hand over any drugs in your possession? C'MON, its a drug raid!! I am a student in Stellenbosch, and everybody knows that you can rather easily obtain drugs in these particular clubs. And sorry, but that argument that police should have attended to murderers and rapists, just doesn't fly. We ask police to take control of the crime situation in our country, but as long as they don't spoil our fun on a Friday night??!! - baasspeurder faber

      SAPS
    10/03/2008 11:01
Pretty amazing how quickly they subdued all the people. Good show of force! Ja ja lambast me but seriously, people in SA need to stop being a bunch of Americanized pansies. It was a Police raid, in the most dangerous country in the world. Get over it and move on. As for male officers searching females, that is a bit harsh. The other people being manhandled, o common, if you just freaken listen and not protest, there would have been no problem. - Dude

What are students doing in a nightclub?
    10/03/2008 11:02
I agree that police sometimes use excessive force hence we have the Independent body investigating police brutality. We however need to be aware that our police operate in a war-zone and are stressed. This is no excuse though. We however need to face our responsibilities as citizens of SA ie work with the police. What were these students doing in a drug filled nightclub? Were they not supposed to be studying for exams? - Libembe

      Asseblief man!!!?
    10/03/2008 11:02
Go and take your "sick and tiredness" elsewhere. More aggressive raids need to take place in this country. SA is a lawless shithole. It is time that SA citizens develop a natural fear for the Police, just like we had it in the old days. Perhaps if people were afraid of being manhandled by the police, they would stop commiting crime in the first place. - AR

      Police corruption
    10/03/2008 11:05
And thesay there was no gun shots and no one was push around. They treated innocent people like criminals. What is this country coming to. Well Selebi was corrupt so i guess i'm not surprised - Undertaker

Thats why oour crime is so high
    10/03/2008 11:07
Here little piggy, dont you think you should be using your resources in the manner you carried this raid at known weekend hot spots for violence and known drug dens...Nope that would be to much work for your doughnut jelly bums...This is abuse and brutallity and please lay a formal charges with ICD (Independant complaints directorate) at this croud of oinkers, there shift boss and commander should be fired... - bob

      This is Pathetic.....
    10/03/2008 11:08
If only they can do this to real criminals to fight crime, but no, then there is no cop to help. But on innocent people they think they can do what they want. This must be taken furher. Sue the F@ckers. - JB

      Pathetic
    10/03/2008 11:10
Absolutely pathetic - what a easy target for cops, why dont they go busting the real criminals like that? Sure they found drugs so what? they need to bust the source of the drugs. I suggest all the people that where harmed in any way during that bust needs to sue the SAPS! - WB

      commending these actions?
    10/03/2008 11:10
if someone sprayed you with mace for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, i am sure you would have trouble commending the outstanding jobs these police did, the "warning" shots they fired missed upstairs patrons by centimetres... but again well done coppers you upheld your reputations - Ryan van Wyk

      So what?
    10/03/2008 11:10
What the hell is your problem? Should the police not act on little baas boys & girls? Your ilk brand them as immobile when called upon, now you bash them for doing their job. Somethings will never change! - Motho

      I would to know?
    10/03/2008 11:11
I would like to know? How many cars and houses were robbed in Stellenbosch? How many people were rapped or murdered, I am not going to add assault as the SAPS were doing enough of that. How much man power did they use? For such a useless exercise. SAPS should concentrate on more important things than raiding a bunch of student jols. - Tyron

      it was like a movie...
    10/03/2008 11:11
I was there, and it was like somthing out of a movie, people getting kicked while on the ground and pepper sprayed in there faces, while offering no resistance, i was loaded into a van myself for doing nothing when i asked what i had done they just squeezed my neck harder and pushed me more. the police spokesmen claims no shots were fired but it is clearly visible how rounds go off in the footage.Instead of catching the people who sells the drugs, rape and steal they nail the easy targets. - Graham Kennedy

      What if ?
    10/03/2008 11:12
What if it was your daughter being manhandles and groped by some "lawless? police officer, spraying pepper spray in her face, the police are taught to handle situations with care and not to endanger the innocent, well it seems the police are too afraid to arrest rapists and murderers that they would rather go after students. - Mr P.

      Welcome
    10/03/2008 11:13
Welcome to South Africa, where free of charge you will get manhandled by the police, raped in one?s house or in jail or fondled by police, hi-jacked, murdered, tortured. Two weeks ago in Limpopo 5 police officers raped a 12 year old girl for 2 years and the story was removed and not a word is said about it. BRING BACK APARTHEID SO THAT WE CAN BECOME CIVILIZED AGAIN - KAC

      Bohemia Customer
    10/03/2008 11:13
I live in Stellenbosch and I frequently go to Bohemia. Typically this is a hang out for mostly 1st and second year students. It's a very laid back place where you can sit down with a beer, get something to eat, and hang out with your friends. There is no 'drug culture' there, and based on the little amount of drugs found there, my point is proven. The police do have a right to raid places, BUT using pepper spray and hitting young people (18-20 year old) is absolutely barbaric and cowardly! - Charl

      nice work SAPS
    10/03/2008 11:13
Once again - ppl want something done about crime but when action is taken - and it happens to affect their night out, its a problem. All praise be to the SAPS - fern

To: Calvin Mkhize, baasspeurder faber, Dude and AR.
    10/03/2008 11:14
To: Calvin Mkhize, baasspeurder faber, Dude and AR. I agree, it is a raid, and some force needs to be present, but there is something like unnecessary force. There are people in that club just socialising on not drinking themselves into a coma. Good, decent, people just relaxing... What you guys are telling me is that you wouldn't mind if the place you were socialising in was raided and a policeman put a hand up your girlfriends skirt... I praise your high standards and morals (ha ha) - Llewellyn

      Drug Den?
    10/03/2008 11:18
Read the news article, people. The cops raided THREE places in Stellenbosch in search of drugs... what did they find? ONLY two joints, that's IT!! - They beat up innocent students, out having a good time, and just because they are above the law, they also sexually molested some girls!! This is disgusting!! - If you are an overseas reader: Please do not come to SA in 2010.. the police here are BRUTAL! - Juan

      Abuse of power
    10/03/2008 11:20
I can't believe that there are brainless idiots out there that think that it is OK for the police to act the way they do, even to innocent people. I would like to see how you wil feel when this happen to you. This kind of behavior is what you would expect from a couple of monkeys not from the people that is suppose to inforce the law in this country. If the police can get away with something like this why can't everybody not? - Louis

      PATHETIC
    10/03/2008 11:20
THEY ARE A BUNCH OF COWARDS...TO SCARED TO FIGHT CRIMINALS SO THEY VICTIMISE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS.... GESTAPO TACTICS!!!!! THEY HARDLY EVER RESPOND TO A 10111 CALL, LOSE DOCKETS, INCOMPETANT, CRIMINALS ARE FOUND NOT GUILTY ON SECTION 174 OF CPU ACT FINDINGS ... PATHETIC - M

      Re: Libembe (Night Club)
    10/03/2008 11:22
Bohemia is NOT a night club. It's a student bar. You can go there in a t-shirt and shorts at any time. It's typically a place for 1st and 2nd year students, and you can even have a meal there. Police hitting and molesting girls is abosolutely disgusting!!! - Karel

      Stunning
    10/03/2008 11:22
What amazing policing. I have a son in his early teens. I'm telling you if my son were abused like this by the police they would have a problem. The boytjie with the pepper spray should try that on me. I swear he'll wear it as a new appendage. Since when did assaulting revellers equate as stopping drunken driving? Since when did going after drug lords equate as violating the rights of the innocent? No pal, do that to my laaitie and I'll bliksem you the first gap I get! Constitution? Rubbish. - Bart

I like it when Police do their job...
    10/03/2008 11:23
this happens often in the townships and we don't complain about it. don't be a sissy be a man. police do not know who's got drugs or not hence all the revellers are searched. Police way to go!!! - Van Tonder

      Nothing
    10/03/2008 11:23
Will happen to theses cops, people get away with murder everyday, why would they be afraid of the law. This country is doomed, get out asap. - JB

      Go check the youtube videos!
    10/03/2008 11:24
To the people who try to excuse these things... Go check out the videos on youtube. The police kicked and hit a girl without any apparent provocation. They fired a shotgun inside bohemia. The people in there are drinking beer and chatting. No one is being raped, no one is being stabbed, beaten or killed. Why the excessive force, why are guns pointed at these students? How many drugs were found? I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't find any hard drugs... - JC Brand

      Awesome
    10/03/2008 11:25
I think it's frigging AWESOME......We definitly need more of it, i might just come back if it carry's on. :) - Shaun

      sucks but deal with it.
    10/03/2008 11:26
Personally i would not be impressed if manhandled like that, but i do commend the police for actually performing the raid. We do need raids but also other police "specials". Criminals must be made to fear the law / but then the law must also act reasonably - its a fine line. - ofcorsa

      Shame, poor students!
    10/03/2008 11:27
Shame, poor students, were you pushed around while in your drunken state, after which you were going to walk home like good citizens? No, most of you were going to climb into your cars in your drunken state and drive home at top speed, and probably kill someone's child or family in the process. Some of the cop's actions were over the top but can you blame them? Start by acting like adults! By the way would all the above people who commented, please learn to spell correctly??! - Neville

      Stellenbosch is not the problem!!
    10/03/2008 11:28
Hey Motho, i am now fedup with black people always commenting on how bad we whites actually are and that we should be gratefull to be tollerated by blacks. Now listen to me, those white baas boys and girls will ,like currently, provide the majority of the tax money one day that will keep the majority of this bloody country alive. Stellenbosch pubs are not the root of evil in this country. Go and shake down any squatter camp and the amount of drugs and guns floating around there will asonish you. - CH

      Lawless
    10/03/2008 11:29
Now I need to beware of criminals and the SAP. This is where I am forced to pick the law up off the floor, dust it off and put it in my own hands - Mr P.

      Frustrated
    10/03/2008 11:30
The police is frustrated, because they don't get paid enough, also, they can't catch the real criminals, or maintain a police pressence in any area, so now they take it out on the general public, so they don't feel so inferior - Dawid

      doing their job ??????
    10/03/2008 11:31
did i read write... some of u peeps say leave them alone they are doing their job and what is that.. treat everyone at a club like they are criminals 1st.. I am sorry thats even more sick... whats to stop them from busting into ur home beating you up and calling it a raid because they suspect people in ur area of dealling of drugs.it is never rite that people think its normal to have a shot gun pointed at ur face... that should never be.. Never. what the club decided not to pay u so u raided it - jacjac

Treated like criminals in our own country...
    10/03/2008 11:33
WTF!!?!?!? This is absolutley sick!!! Its not like this was a gathering of Drug or Crime lords, simply people enjoying a night out. Its SICK SICK SICK, the police have no right to treat citizens like this. Every one in the country MUST stand up, dont let them get away with this rubbish!!!! - fuzzy

the police have been doing this for years in the townships,
    10/03/2008 11:33
they do this everytime there's a "black gathering" in Hatfield. These acts are shameful and must be reported. I agree they should search the places, but you can search without kicking and punching. - tshepo

      Like a movie...
    10/03/2008 11:33
And now all the "innocent" students qualify for Oscars. - jb

      Some things don't change
    10/03/2008 11:34
AR your comments come out of some dark age. It's the law we have to fear not the police. In the old days the police behaved worse and everyone feared them thats why they went around killing people with impunity. The kind of civility borne out of our so called freedom is the problem.Treating people like shit and in an uncivil manner is barbaric. You seem to be right at home with that.Thats why some things just dont change - psycobabble

      Loosing it
    10/03/2008 11:35
Police are just loosing it these days. They even shoot protesters like they are on war - Online

      To all the praise above...
    10/03/2008 11:36
What if they killed some on with the suposed "warning" shots that where never fired, but clearly visible in the footage?!?!!?!? - fuzzy

      Joke
    10/03/2008 11:36
What a joke like the rest of SA's top Brazz! - Martin

      Van Tonder
    10/03/2008 11:37
You people in the Townships always stab each other with bottle and knifes, thats why u get raided often. Some people live civilized, and know how not to behave like monkeys. Africa will always stay a 3rd world country because of this. - JB

      i'm all for it!!
    10/03/2008 11:37
Some of the students actually had the audacity to ask the cops for their identity?? C'mon, do you seriously think that the cops are going to stop in the middle of a drug raid to try and convince drunk students that they are in fact SAPS??!! But, I do think that it was wrong for a male officer to frisk females. - witseun

      SAPS
    10/03/2008 11:39
To all the people that complain about the Police what have you done to change things - have you applied to be a reservist in your area - have you done youe best to prevent crime or the selling of drugs etc etc - easy to sit in your comfort zone and and moan. To each and every policeman and woman out there THANK YOU, for giving up you nights, weekend, public holidays trying to keep us safe - not all police bad but it take one to give them all a bad name. - Vanessa

could not believe what i saw on the cctv video
    10/03/2008 11:39
I watched the video now and i find it absolutely disgusting. I hope there are some rich children whose dads have loads of cash and they sue the police for their atrocious behaviour. You can clearly see the police brutalising people and shooting the shotgun in the pub. Then they have the audacity to deny it all. Pathetic - Carel

      Your point???
    10/03/2008 11:45
They found drugs at other night clubs!! And so what's the problem with a little added force by the police!! "please sir, may you hand me your drugs so that yo may carry on with your piss up evening!!!" COME ON!! Good on the police. People want to parttake in such activities then they must realise that raids are likely! - Win

      Come on
    10/03/2008 11:46
Rather go after the killers & the scum who rape innocent women & children,This country is out of control with violent crime,COME ON S.A.P.S do your jobs. - ross

      Motho, Van Tonder,
    10/03/2008 11:49
If crap like this is happening in the so-called "townships", it is just as wrong. Why do you guys always turn to racism to prove your point? - hjs

      pathetic
    10/03/2008 11:49
Why aren't these police raiding tik dens and whatnot, instead of terrorizing students in pubs??? - kitt

      Dogs
    10/03/2008 11:49
Force is not a requirement of a 'raid'! Except in Nazi Germany perhaps. Cops are dogs. They behave according to pack mentality and seek to dominate, just like your dog at home trying to hump anything that moves. Since my student days I have had scant respect for the scum we call police. I have witnessed them off-duty smoking dagga, smacking their wives and girlfriends, driving drunk, using their SAP 'discount' cards at illegal shebeens etc. We need a professional police force. Not dogs! - Danie

      No to police brutality
    10/03/2008 11:51
Dude, you say the police raid was in the most dangerous country in the world. Would you say that the Maties contribute to this "dangerous country" and do you honestly think that Stellenbosch is so dangerous. What about the girls that was body search and that by a man. Police actions was against soft targets! - Lynni

      Police brutality
    10/03/2008 11:51
Let them get away with this brutalising the public. Wait for the next election and they will tell you where to vote. - Sarel

      NOW!!
    10/03/2008 11:52
If only the obviously very brave SAPS can get off their asses & do something about the REAL crime in this country, we'll be sorted! I agree with the raids, and I think it's about time that students get sorted out for unruly behaviour, but let's tackle the real problem, guys...?! - Ollie

      GO SAPS!! EXELLENT JOB!!
    10/03/2008 11:52
You people raided THREE places that night.. and you only found 2 joints!?! - Yes, Stellenbosch SURE has a rug problem, hey? I recon you should go in there with AK47's and flame throwers next time! Imagine HOW MANY LIVES would have been destroyed if someone smoked those 2 joints! You truely are heroes! - Juan

      Now police need to continue
    10/03/2008 11:53
A police raid should not be a peaceful process. The strong arm of the law should be shown more in nightclubs and shebeens. Drug dealers are rife in these areas and should be taken out. Our youth is the future and if they don't see the need for such raids they won't know the difference when they older. I too was subject to such raids in the early 1990's and fully agree that these places should be cleaned out by force so the young people can learn there is a real world out there. - Bullit

      Neville
    10/03/2008 11:53
You obviously dont know how to spell yourself, paragraph's and statements are followed by a single ! or ? and not double proceded by ???""!!! - bob

Dude - you are the reason Apartheid thrived
    10/03/2008 11:54
You are the type of compliant naff that rolls over and plays dead rather than standing up for your rights. Police brutality thrives because chickens like you accept abuse. You are a victim of oppression. Seek counseling! - Danie

      Enough with the racism
    10/03/2008 11:54
People, please don't make this another black vs white thing. This has nothing to do with race. If the club was full of black people enjoying themselves it would be just as inexcusable. - JC Brand

Put the police in their place permanently
    10/03/2008 11:55
Police brutality is increasing. They are getting out of hand and if they are not pulled into line we will be in serious trouble. This is the very raeson the people in the USA protest over and do something about every infringement on civil rights and if we don't do that we will wake up and find our coffee cold. All those who speak for the police are probably just that, cops themselves. AWAY WITH YOU, we want a police force regulated properly, by the people, not rampant criminal bullys. - Citizen

      Monkey
    10/03/2008 11:55
What do you expect guys from a bunch of monkeys posing in police uniform with a weapon. Take that away from them and the average senior citizen could easily deal with them. To become a cop all you need is to know someone who can read and write. In the old days we called them stasie blompotte. Another thing, huh, trying to compare that to what happens in a township, puleez, there is no comparison as this is where those monkeys in uniform come from. Buncha morons. - Steve C

JB, you called urself civilised with comments like that?
    10/03/2008 11:56
i hope you don't engrain your way of thinking into yr children, 'cuz they would have a hard time living in a country where exclusive white rule is not coming back. - tshepo

      Sori i beg to differ
    10/03/2008 11:58
students, most high on drugs and alchohol, can be very very wild. just go to Hatfield in PTA and see what sometimes goes on there. people need to take the police serious otherwise the lawlessness will never end in South Africa. its because of articles such as yours that we are such an unrully bunch. - boni

I guess you didn't see the video
    10/03/2008 12:01
Those of you that think, this was a right move and should be done more often. Obviously didn't see the video;s: http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2285201,00.html You can clearly see the police using WAY too much force. It is your human right, to ask a police officer a warrant and his badge number. - Jacques le Roux

      calvin,faber and dude
    10/03/2008 12:05
Are you three serious?Nothing could have given the police the right to spray people in the face with pepper spray, knock them around with guns, hit them, kick them, drag a woman by the heir across the street, nothing can give them that right, you three are pathetic and exactly the reason why our society is going backwards,it's because there are people who think like you.!!!!you three are disgusting - creech

      To Psycobabble
    10/03/2008 12:05
The problem with your comment is, that things have changed my friend. Any criminal act purpetrated by a human being is a barbaric and uncivilized act. That is why uncivilized or barbaric acts are met with the sanctions they deserve. It is a country's method of establishing order and preventing chaos. Crime is out of hand because people who commit barbaric acts are treated with love and respect and with total regard to their rights and feelings. - AR

Crowd contol tactics makes it safer
    10/03/2008 12:05
I think maybe everyone needs to step back from the initial emotional response to this. Let give these guys a little credit for the work they aer doing and the conditions that they work under. I wonder how many who say this is disgusting would be willing to get into the line of fire and try and make a difference. We might all have to be inconvenienced a little by the war on crime. An innitial strong show of force allows the police to quickly take contol of an area. This stops people being killed. - aj

      RE: Libembe
    10/03/2008 12:06
Obviously you neva attended varsity and do not know how university exam schedules work. You can have up to 3 weeks between 2 exams. Even so, If they dont want to study, thats their perogative, not yours!!! Happy that the police did what they did, just disgusted in the manner it was done. Shoking video!!! Please do not judge all police in SA on what happened at Matties. - Ricky

      undertaker
    10/03/2008 12:07
Undertaker please bro. How do you tell which people are innocent and which ones are not. Drugs were found in some of those clubs raided, but could not be linked to anyone because they threw them on the floor when they saw the police. So, now could u show us those that the drugs belonged to by just looking at them??? Please people do use your brains sometimes before you write rubbish here!! - zakes

      Vanessa
    10/03/2008 12:08
To your questions I can answer yes. Can you do the same? At any rate, it is NOT about people complaining about the Police, it is about whether or not the Police overstepped their authority and if so, whether or not action should be taken against those found guilty. Police standing orders PROHIBITS the searching by male officers of female suspects. That is tantamount to sexual assault and is AGAINST THE LAW. Get the picture yet? - Bodie

      What's the big deal?
    10/03/2008 12:08
what's the big deal with this....this happens in the township every weekend. - HJ

Police enjoy making the people suffer
    10/03/2008 12:09
What a lot of nitwits defending the police. Wake up snorers. The police have been oppressing and brutalizing black peopel forever worse than this every day and what have we got? A clean criminal free black society? I don't think so. Just the other side of the criminal coin in uniform. - Phineas

      I LOVE IT
    10/03/2008 12:11
Good one SAPS ? we need to remove crime from our society and we need more rid like the one in Stellembosch. I love it. - colin

      Fund
    10/03/2008 12:12
If there is a fund to contribute to legal cost; I will gladly give so that these pigs (SAPS) can get nailed. Will every one pls. read CH's comment again. By denying what he say makes you a fool. - Kaas

      Act of cowardness
    10/03/2008 12:13
It seems as this is the run of the law. We have a police force filled with corrupt people, and a force that is too cowardly to attend to the big crimes issues in this country. The same applies to the cops on the road! What more can you expect from someone with no more than grade 10... - PW

      COWARDS!!!!
    10/03/2008 12:14
Easy being tough with the defenseless public but too s#&t scared to go after real criminals. absolute waste of taxpayers money. If the south africn police service disbanded no one would even notice. Nothing will change as they are useless, lazy, pigs!! - gatvol

      Divided we stand
    10/03/2008 12:15
This country is SO f..d up, it is frightening. Here was clear disregard for people's rights, but some people applaud the police, others worry about the spelling in the posts(!) and 'it happens in the townships all the time'. Applaud the police when then they do their jobs- not when they think their job is a show of force on a soft target. If it happens in the townships - DO something about it - don't make it a black/white thing. You holier than thou lot - GET A LIFE! - Enough

      Police Brutality
    10/03/2008 12:15
Treating a student bar as if it was a riotous assembly is not the way to go. The police must start to behave like a civilised police force, not like a bunch of brutal thugs, groping and kicking anyone whom they feel like arresting. The Minister responsible should be requested to answer for these events - man raped while in custody, girl raped while in custody, sexual assaults on women during raids - it just goes on and on, while real criminals kill, rob and rape with impunity. One must ask whose side are the police on? (Answer : Their Own) South Africa needs a force of real, disciplined policemen, who know their job and who are committed to law and order, and who are paid enough to do a proper job without corruption and brutality. But we don't even have politicians who can do their job, so what chance is there of getting an ethical, dedicated police force. - Ct

      How times have changed
    10/03/2008 12:16
Not so long ago the police used to raid clubs in Hilbrow for the same reason as these barbaric idiots. But, guess what, it was civilised and no one was inconvenienced. Wake up people, the police these days are just as criminal as the criminals they supposedly prosecute! Why could the SAPS raid a very notorious club in Hilbrow in the early 1990's without ANY force and still do their jobs and now all of a sudden they need to resort to force. This is not a job well done. - AB

      Well said Danie
    10/03/2008 12:18
You want to tell me the law does not party, drink and drive, take drugs??? They are the biggest culprits!! - PW

      soft target !
    10/03/2008 12:19
Ok so who forgot to pay off the cops this month?? 150 grams of dagga and some cocaine??? Crickey what a hall....they must be so proud......probabaly enough for at least 4 Maties to get high......and it looks like when then raided Pablo Escobar!! What an enbarresment. SAPS - here is a BIG clue: Try raiding at the airport or the harbour where the real drug dealers ply there trade. Leave students alone - go find some real criminals. - BG

      Township PUB
    10/03/2008 12:20
Media24 JURNOS ? is this only news because it happened in a PUB were the majority of the customers were white ? this happens every weekend in the Black and Coulourd Townships but have not reach your headlines to date. Selective reporting should stop. - colin

      Libembe??
    10/03/2008 12:20
Lets think before we write something Libemebe! Where do most students go for a night out, a nightclub maybe? err. Exams are still about 4 months away. Wake up!! - David

      Why all the noise???
    10/03/2008 12:25
Why all the noise all of a sudden?? Haven't we seen similar scenes in the townships during police raids or is this fuss all about the club being frequented by white patrons? To me the police did a good thing, the belief that crime is perpetuated by once sector of our society doesn't hold water; and the sooner we accept this the better. Go SAPS!!! - Qminati

      Pointing guns!
    10/03/2008 12:26
Is it legal to point a gun at someone?. I do not think so..... - Johnny

      Power trip
    10/03/2008 12:26
Phineas i agree with you ... for police its the power trip. Really how much do they accomplish by doing this? I got stopped by a police van just 2 min away from my house, bright shining in my face, they parked me in with their van.and then the females officer searched me, very uncomfortable. It was and remains to be the most humilating experience i've had.My friends who were with my said they were used to it. I refuse to become used to being treated this way! - Leana

Take the law into your own hands cause the police is USELESS!!!!
    10/03/2008 12:27
Easy, and I admit, have been a victim of this, but seeing that it does not help complaining took law into my own hand and admit, will do it again. The cop has to go home sometime and believe me his not that tough then. - Neil

      DO IT MORE.
    10/03/2008 12:29
Yep we need more action like this. People complaining about this will be the first to lambast the cops when their friends or relatives die from an OD. The picture here is bigger than a couple of folks been halled to the ground. The cops need to find the drug pushers. If they go in there with sweets and chocolates for everyone the drugs will dissapear long before the cops make it two steps in to the joint. So the fat kid got his ass kicked mm maybe he was a suspect the cops were looking for?? - Barry

      Undercover
    10/03/2008 12:29
The police have got a job to do and must do it but I believe their management skills are in short supply. Covert operations by a few plain clothes policemen/women are far more effective than any raid - I've done it. It would be nice to see the same action taken at say Nord str. taxi rank. Are they brave enough? - Al

Police - a career they chose
    10/03/2008 12:30
Police Officers chose thier careers nobody forced them to take the job. Stress and being underpaid is an excuse for poor performance. The Police are a joke! - Michael

      par 4 the course
    10/03/2008 12:31
the meagre drugs find at three clubs would what you would expect from a raid at any 3 arbitrary restaurants in any part of this country. it's a joke. - donovan

      Is this really necessary
    10/03/2008 12:34
Doesn't matter where something like the Stellenbosch incident happens - Soweto, Cape Town anywhere. Cops are supposed to protect us, not violate basic human rights. At least have female police officers searching the females. The brutality and way they treated the students is unacceptable and should be acted upon, and if it happens anywhere else, it is your duty to speak up. If police treats humans this way, they send a message to criminals that its ok to act that way. What is happening to SA???? - Ex-US student

      Raids & Raids
    10/03/2008 12:36
There is too much equating rape & murder in this column. Police need to carry out raids wherever they think there may be drugs, just as they raid taverns and squatter camps. However, there are protocols that must be adhered to during a raid and clearly this wasn't done by the cops. So, take the footage to the IDC and lay a complaint. this isn't a "black against white" debate. It's piss poor policing!! - Gee

      To all of you
    10/03/2008 12:36
To all of you that agree the cops did a great job please get over yourselfs as it is all fair and well when alot of innocent people where harmed u
