  • Robben Island 'a lonely place'
  • VIDEO: Behind the tour
  • Dead Editor,

What is happening on Robben Island? I read with some concern the article about the "exodus" from Robben Island.

Surely Robben Island is a herritage site and a place of great historical significance in South Africa.

As a tourist attraction, it is very popular amongst foreign visitors and for South Africans, it is a tour that we all should try and do.

I get the feeling from the article that the whole infrastructure and support mechanisms required to run the operation are failing and that the employees involved are suffering from low morale. In the mean time, it appears as if there exists a lack of ownership of the operation and it is in danger of collapsing completely.

Surely the Government cannot allow this to become another crisis and they need to do something to rescue the situation? Given this scenario, we are giving South Africa a bad name in terms of tour cancellations and confusion regarding the availability of tours.

I believe that the operation should be privatised in order to preserve this part of our history and in so doing, offer visitors and tourists a memorable experience.

    Stormin,
    Pretoria

      2 options!!!
    18/03/2008 17:18
First being, reopen the prison, max security, put all of the worst of the worst in there. At least we can have a little assurance that there will be no cutting of window bars to escape. The 2nd being leave it to the seals and penquins, am sure that they were there long before it was used as a prison and have a bigger claim to it than tourists. - nWo

      how important?
    18/03/2008 17:31
SA has much bigger problems than maintaining an old prison site. If the current government not see it as an heritage site, just give it back to nature. - Benzo

      Running at a RM27 Loss!
    18/03/2008 17:31
I read on IOL that it ran at a RM27 loss last year. With all the tourism and global interest in the place, this can only be attributed to gross mismanagement. Yet another example of the impact of poorly implemented AA end EO policy. Head hunt and hire some competent people instead of throwing more money at the problem! - bokkie

They cannot even manage Robben Island let alone a country. So it seems. - petrus

      I agree
    18/03/2008 18:30
It is a culteral heritage site and should be treated as such. It is also a great site for tourists, and assists the tourist industry in Cape Town, which is imperative. Us as Cape Townians don't want to have to look at a cold dead island where so much history has occured! - Kris

      Robben Island
    18/03/2008 19:08
The goverment has lost control of the country, there is chaos in everything they have touched. It is obivious that there greed is beyond reason, even to the point of murder, rape, theft, and basic principles of decency. They can't even control a very small little island. - Bryan Risi

      Is it soooo unexpected?
    18/03/2008 23:33
Sad, very sad. But just another notch in this Governments proverbial bedpost. They could screw up anything. Still, as long as the powers that be get their bonuses, who up there cares?! They will be sorry, only when it is too late. - Ray

      I'll take it
    19/03/2008 08:32
If Robben island is making a R27 million loss a year, The government can give it to me for minus R 13.5 million. At least I will save the tax man Half that was lost last year & exponentially more than that in the years to come. I would turn it into something like an Oranje stad, only with a more english name. The economy of the island would grow ten times faster than S.A, purely from fishing, growing veggies, fruit & tourism if I want any Nelson lovers on my island. - Malcolm X

      Have you
    19/03/2008 09:20
Robin Island should be kept alive, but getting a trip there is impossible. I tried when i was in Capetown, and heard that you should book 1 month in advance, yet, the boat heading there had 12 cancelation, but you still could not get a ticket. That is why it is failing - Dawid

      Put it up for sale...
    19/03/2008 09:26
Put Roben Island up for sale... I'll buy it! - Ernst

Reopen the island as a prison
    19/03/2008 09:59
I agree with nWo. Demolish the old prison and build a massive max security prison and send the worst of the worst there. That should keep rapists and murderers from escaping constantly out of our jails. Those that escape from the prison still have an 11km swim ahead. Why they closed it down I still don?t understand. - Carel

      Reserve
    19/03/2008 10:04
Turn it into a private reserve and make it a safe haven for tourists. - Nick

      Robben or Robber's Island
    19/03/2008 10:06
Regardless of the fact that our dear Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life there, and others, I would sleep so much better at night if it were to become an interment facility once more. We are in dire need of jails. I heard last night that our prisoners laze around, listening to TV and making calls to their buddies. Can u imagine what they r getting up to. No send them to Robben Island, the C Max ones, let them make something usefull. Then RI may really start making money. - Alicia

Parliament should be moved there! Then they can justify the waste of our hard earned tax money. - psycobabble

      Open a new prison?
    19/03/2008 10:47
Why not open a new prison for all the hard criminals? Let them work a bit, they have jeopardized their freedom (that Mandela earned there) by killing etc, so now let the true criminals be housed there. - M

      Robben Island
    19/03/2008 11:00
Interesting that the ANC care so little for the prison home of their 'great leader'. What are we to assume from this negligence? Perhaps their only interest in Mr Mandela was for leverage to incite the masses. Now he has fulfilled his purpose, the illegal regime currently running South Africa are free to murder, plunder, and destroy to their hearts content. - meltonmark
