May 2 holiday a bad idea
19/03/2008 13:38  - (SA)

Want to know more?
Answerit can help.
  • SA set to get May 2 off too
  • March 21 issue not resolved yet
  • Dear Editor,

Make the second of May a Public Holiday?

Can't government think at all? If they go ahead and declare May 2 a public holiday (I know it's a once-off), it means we will have a two day working week.

Monday the 28th April is a holiday, so is Thursday the 1st May. We're left with two days. Add load shedding, and you're left with one or one-and-a-half days of actual production.

The public holiday is not the problem here, but surely another date can be considered? What are they trying to do? Kill the economy! Oops, sorry forgot, they've already done that. Any thoughts?

    Claudia,
    East Rand

      Schools rule?
    19/03/2008 14:22
I see your point...however, if the public schools' autocracy of last year is anything to go by, the day will be declared a school holiday even if not a public holiday....then what do we parents have to do again? Pay more for aftercare... - Marvin

      I have a thought, Claudia
    19/03/2008 14:28
I'll send you a postcard from the seaside while you worry about productivity. Really! Oh, and they haven't killed the economy - it's very much still growing at a rate higher than most countries in the world (including US and UK, and, oh my - Australia!) - JC

Lets declare the whole week a holiday "ESKOM" week. Let Eskom do all the maintenance it has to and use the 10 million of executive bonuses to pay the workers for their public holiday time. - greg

      Holiday
    19/03/2008 15:36
South Africans complain that they are stressed at work. You give them a holiday, a great chance to get away from what stresses them, now they are stressing about things that will result from them not being at the stressful environment. Those who want to go work on May 2 should go to work and keep the economy going. - Holiday maker

      Dr Phil247 and Sdlala
    19/03/2008 15:36
Paid by the hour?????? What's that got to do with it? We're all entitled to 12 public holidays a year. Are you saying the rest of us who do want that holiday and will be getting paid for it should sacrifice it because some of you get paid by the hour???? What did you do ALL these years when the 21st of March was SEPARATE from Good Friday????? - M.M

      More holidays please :)
    19/03/2008 15:47
Yeah! 2 day work week! Production for me is not about hours but how much you actually do with them..... - Xander

      @ Bethuel
    19/03/2008 15:51
You don't deserve double double pay because your productivity is too low. South Africans have too many public holidays. Its why we can't compete on a global scale. And then you strike about your salaries being low? That's why I work for myself - the more days I work the more I earn. I won't be taking leave on these days! - May

      let there be....holiday
    19/03/2008 16:04
we deserve it after the recent mishaps & bad news that's been happening in our beloved country (racism,crime,etc.)...those who want to work musk arrange with their bosses. - eeZee

As someone who runs a business it plays absolute havoc with our delivery schedules, as well as receiving goods from overseas and production of goods, however it will be a lovely break - like Christmas :o) - stack

Clearly you know nothing about running a business or you would share in the frustration. You are another one of those people that plays the racism card - sadly (for your sake) you cant keep using that excuse with every topic. - brenda

      EISHKOM
    20/03/2008 08:06
Ag you know what? Our productivity is already so low with eskom's loadshedding that this extra off day isnt going ot make much difference at all. Eskom killed the economy. And the only reason why there will never be loadshedding on long weekends is that eskom executives also want a nice power filled long weekend. Eskom is fooling us all. - LJE
