LETTER
Bulllard 'a scapegoat'
11/04/2008 14:45  - (SA)

  • I'm no racist, says Bullard
  • Bullard 'went too far'
  • Sunday Times fires Bullard
  • Dear Editor,

This is a short letter about the firing of David Bullard by Sunday Times as one does not need to expound too much to get the point across.

This is a perfect example of what David was trying to portray in his letter: the previously disadvantaged desperately need someone to blame for all the ills of present and past. In this case he is the scapegoat for having written a short satire (if anyone out there understands this), and a rather amusing article.

Actually if the article is so offensive to many then the editor should be fired. Is he not the one who decides what should be printed?

But then again, he is also probably disadvantaged.

    Jouster,
    Pretoria

Jouster - Satire my left foot
    11/04/2008 14:52
You are as Racist as David Bullard! David Bullard is always been a racist. All his columns proves that. - Z

      Jouster,
    11/04/2008 14:53
my sentiments exactly. I always thought the editor was in charge of what s printed in his paper. Maybe he is not, and actually works for some political party. - hjs

      Indeed
    11/04/2008 15:02
The editors job is to check the articles BEFORE the news paper goes to print thereby ensuring what is printed is not offensive. He should be fired for letting that in the paper if he thought it was so racist. Mr Bullard was the only reason to buy the Sunday Times... - Ali

      Repetition!
    11/04/2008 15:05
Sorry sir, but someone has already written on the same topic just this morning and we have already exhausted the subject for the day. We cannot repeat anger and rewrite our earlier comments! - Sello

      Bullard is Bull
    11/04/2008 15:20
David Bullard is a racist finish and Klaar. These are the same people who claim to be Africans but remain Europeans in just about everything about them. They claim being African but their whole world outlook is essentially European, their value systems and the like. If you have heard Bullard talking, he is no African by any stretch of imagination - a typical aristocratic British English racist. Afrikaners are by far more African than this phantom African! - Khoza

      Jouster
    11/04/2008 15:22
The man admits he's been writing racists and sexist articles. So he's racist and sexist. Please, dont be so dumb. - Afriman

      Spot on!
    11/04/2008 15:26
Funny how Jon Q gets away with his written dribble. But at the Sunday times, maybe the editor cannot read? Who knows? PDI? Anyway, I also stopped buying it. - Double standards?

Most South Africans don't get it
    11/04/2008 15:27
Well said Jouster. Sadly the vast majority of South Africans (of all races)never have and never will understand satire. They just don't get it. Bullard is, in my opinion, the master of his craft and will be sorely missed. His column was the highpoint of my week. The Sunday Times will never be the same again. - CJ

Obviously the editor is now covering his ass
    11/04/2008 15:35
Its sad when that happens. Besides, I have read far worse in other news papers and nothing ever happened, so I think double standards do apply when the writer is white. - M

      What about the ed?
    11/04/2008 15:53
Doesn't the editor have final say regarding what does and doesn't get published? Surely it's his responsibility to ensure that the views published aren't "...incongruent with the values of the Sunday Times..."? Why isn't Mondli Makhanya being held accountable? The whole thing reeks. - Nic

      Z - take a moment to reflect!
    11/04/2008 15:56
The first respondent above should take amoment to reflect on his juvenile and desperately immature attitude. This country will become more 1st world when people understand whatthey are saying and whatthe implications are. Rockets to the moon were'nt built on knee jerk shooting from the hip reactions!!! - JOUSTER

      Sad!
    11/04/2008 15:56
Such a shame that a great columnist like Bullard has to go this way. I did actually take a step back when first reading his article last weekend but slowly realised this was the man being satirical to the tee. Suddenly the man is a racist... "aristocratic British racist"...could have been Bob Mugabe making that statement. Over the years he has not held back and had a go at all South Africans (no matter what colour we are)...maybe thats the real problem in this country, we cannot handle the truth! - Paul

Jouster: u r so racist that you can't even see it!
    11/04/2008 16:02
"he is the scapegoat for having written a short satire (if anyone out there understands this), and a rather amusing article". I am not suprised by your comments. You and people like David were raised up to disregard the feelings of black people. You cannot continue disrespecting black people like that. They are human. - Lebo

      Fire Mondli too
    11/04/2008 16:02
I'v not been buying the paper for a very long time now, not only because of David, but Mondli's poor editorship too. I say fire him too for he failed to do his work. If he claims he has been pressurised by some external forces to fire David, let him resign then. But i still don't understand how uninformed some white folks can be - thinking that colonialism improved this continent - just take time and read about Africa's history you'll know the facts. - TheOne

      bullard
    11/04/2008 16:03
For many people the weekly purchase of the Sunday Times is an act of pure habit because it can hardly be called a quality read. People like Hogarth, Ronge and Bullard reinforce this habit because there is very little else worth reading. Sure, Bullard was a bit over the top with his most recent article but it seems that the editorial staff were fast asleep and he is being blamed for their indolence. Maybe it really is time to break a habit of 30 years - anton kleinschmidt

      Viva David -Viva
    11/04/2008 16:06
Well done David Bullard. As amusing as I found your article, I couldn't help but see the truth in it. Unfortunately the vast majority of our beloved South Africa, cannot deal with the truth, & yes, they do want somebody to blame for it. Personally, I would like to also opt out in life & go & live in the bush somewhere. The only difference, Is I would use the bush to my advantage & to make a better life. True wealth originates from the soil. - Malcolm

      David Bullard
    11/04/2008 16:07
Bottom line - Mr. Bullard was reflecting on a truth. There would have been absolutely NO development on the African continent had the white man never come. Every single invention/ breakthrough/ development in every field of science, medicine, engineering, biology - everything - has been by whites and Asians. Fact. Nothing, absolutely nothing, by blacks. And whites and Asians taught themselves how - ie learnt for themselves. - Nick Armstrong
