Make use of lift clubs
18/04/2008 10:39  - (SA)

  • Worry about diesel, not petrol
  • Petrol Price Q&A
  • Havoc as fuel pumps run dry
  • Dear Editor,

One of the debates around the office has been the high fuel price and how to limit its impact. But employers need to play their part, too.

The one solution that has been put forward is to make use of carpools or lift clubs. However, I have heard people say that timing becomes an issue, as sometimes one member of the lift club has to work late and this inconveniences the others.

How do we solve this problem? I think that employers should understand that under normal circumstances if a group of people, say four employees, all need to leave at 16:30 sharp then it should be understood that these staff members can leave at 16:30 and their work should be structured in order to do so.

No meetings or other regular tasks should be given to the these people at this time. Yes, there will always be exceptions, but they should be just that, exceptions.

People, employers and employees, need to flexible. A crisis often reveals an opportunity and in this case the opportunity is for all of us to save fuel, increase disposable income and improve working relations with our colleagues and our companies.

    Jody Chabas,
    Sandton

      Rubbish
    18/04/2008 10:46
I think you are looking at a "workaround" rather than a solution, therefore this article is irrelevant and pointless. - ICEMAN

      Not That simple
    18/04/2008 10:46
Yea, it sounds as a good answer, but you need to check your insurance cover. Some insurance do not cover should you are in a accident if you were carrying passengers for revenue. You will be regarded as a taxi.Something else to think of is your reponsibility if someone is injured or die in your transit. - alan

      Even better solution
    18/04/2008 10:50
Work from home, for those in positions that allow it. Another solution is to switch off lights in the office at 6pm (enable the reduction of loadshedding for the afternoon times to a reasonable 2 hours) - LvH

      What nonsense?
    18/04/2008 10:51
No way that you can reasonably expect employers to defer work for people to participate in lift clubs. By doing this, the upward spiral of poor work productivity will escilate and inflation, et al will mushroom. It is nonsense that people seem to expect that (as the norm) their employers must subordinate the core business of the company to the personal baggage of an already lazy workforce. Just imagine "sorry I can't help you right now,I need to catch my lift... Come back tomorrow." Humbug! - saliem

      Lift experience!
    18/04/2008 10:53
There's no way I am getting into a lift club with anyone, I wake up late, and have a tendency of leaving office either too early or too late, and when I do, I am sure to pass by somewhere or try to avoid traffic jams by taking funny routes that may not be convenient for other lift members. If we had a good bus system in our country, I would defnitely take a bus! But a car lift? No ways. - Sello

      Hey its a start
    18/04/2008 10:56
Work around or not.People at my work already doing it. And it helps alot for global warming , having one car instead of 4 traveling. Personaly I ride a scooter and it works for me.If we all do our bit it wil make a difference !!! - bongani

      Not that simple or convienient!
    18/04/2008 10:59
This is not so simple. People need to find others that travel to and from the same area, the people may not be from the same company resulting in different work times. People may require extra cash so decide to work overtime, or perhaps the company closes early maybe on a Friday, hampering the times for that person. Lift clubs can help us save, but is does have its rather big inconvieniences on driver and lift club members. - ayesha

      Lift clubs
    18/04/2008 10:59
Years ago lift clubs were a popular means of commuting and for some reason the popularity died off. I think a number of reasons which include flexihours, pre & post business day activities like gym and perhaps even security issues. I think another way to reduce the miles we spend burning up fuel would be to allow resources to work from home, unfortunately what you have then is only a small % of people benefiting. - John Camp

Decent and safe public transport is the answer
    18/04/2008 10:59
Unfortunately, many of us are in jobs that require us to drive out. Some mothers also have to worry about fetching kids. So car pooling is only practical if you are 100% office bound and you work the same hours as your co-travelers. Now if we had decent public transport (eg. buses with schedules, or clean and safe trains) then we would not have to worry too much about the petrol price. That is really everyone's solution to the same problem. - sudika

      Huh?
    18/04/2008 11:00
I have a less complicated solution, obviously not all solutions suite everybody - but try live closer to where you work or work closer to where you live. Employers can't take up the responsibility to make your life easier! - wb

If you can arrange your life like that then you aren't working hard enough
    18/04/2008 11:05
If you are ambitious, hard working and there to do a job rather than just spend time in the office lift clubs don't work. - Doesn't work

      CAR POOLS AND LIFT CLUBS
    18/04/2008 11:09
This is a great idea as it has many spin offs. Less congestion, less emmisions, diminshed hijack threat as more people in vehicle etc etc. There does not have to be a revenue issue as today you travel with me and, I pay, by tomorrow having you travel with me. Hours of work are pretty standard for most employees so Jody your arguement is pretty irrelevant. You are one of those who looks for an excuse around every corner to leave early, I can see that. ICEMAN keep stiring, I like it. - fandash

      Lift Clubs
    18/04/2008 11:11
I don't think it is as much a lift club that should be formed as much as the need for reliable school transport. Reason being that I travel on the dreaded Hendrik Potgieter road everday. During school terms this drive of around 5Km could take an hour but during school holidays takes 10 minutes. Not everyone can take leave during school holidays so this only leaves the traffic difference to moms and dads "taxi". - Kevin

All these because of petrol hike.
    18/04/2008 11:17
We work together from defferent location and those who're lucky they can be two.bear in mind that i bought my car alone as i want to use it as possible as i need without interferance of my colleagues.so lift club to me cannot solve, only Dept.of Mineral and Energy to re-consider their petrol hikes. - Bethuel

No need to react with so much anger
    18/04/2008 11:18
Jody certainly didn't dictate that EVERYBODY should now join lift clubs, nor did he/she say it's a fix-all, so those who can't join lift-clubs do not need to dismiss it with such rancour as some of the remarks above. He/she suggested one of the possible ways of combating the problem of high fuel prices, & there certainly are employees in our country who can afford to do that. Which is more than I can say for any of the dismissive posters above. Thanks Jody, our country needs more people like you. - Jaco

      My solutions
    18/04/2008 11:21
I planning to move to randburg(close to my work) from june,so i will always walk to work(rather than driving from soweto everyday worse when there is loadshedding). To all of you, mazda323 midge 130 i think on fuel is much better. - dr phil247

      Never again
    18/04/2008 11:21
I used to take people with me to work everyday and i am never doing it again. It is such a pain, because some people have this " we pay you" attitude. That is the only reason and the funny thing is that i didnt approach any of them. They came to me and asked for my help...So i travel alone, thats it - funnybones

      Not that practical
    18/04/2008 11:22
It sounds good in theory, but how many times have you been asked to do a rush job 20 minutes before the end of the day? Other members of the lift club would then have to wait for you to finish. My personal solution is to travel to work outside peak hours (I work flexitime), and to watch my personal budget every month. - James

      Solution !!
    18/04/2008 11:23
How about Jody Chabbas becomes His/Her own boss or take a Bus. WHATTA LOAD...!! - Les-Maada

      Make it work!
    18/04/2008 11:26
My mom and I do lift club and it seems to work quite well, she is an HR Director at a major bank and I am an IT contractor. 2 days a week depending on our schedules is better than none! Oh, Saliem pull your head out the sand. Many companies have started to allow employees to fit their work times around their preferred travelling times, depending on their role in the company of coarse. How productive will an employee be after spending 3 hours in traffic trying to get to work as 8am? - Dillon

      Jody is right
    18/04/2008 11:26
Unfortunately we will all have to make a plan in the future, fuel prices can only go up. Everyone who disagrees here WILL reach a point where the cost to drive their own comfortable vehicles outweighs the inconvenience of a liftclub / scooter / bus / taxi / bicycle etc. The fuelprice is going to change the way we think about transport. - JC

      Another solution....
    18/04/2008 11:26
My thirsty 4x4 now stays in the garage from Monday to Friday and I ride a scooter to work. This saves me around R1000 a month in petrol. I live in a small city so the distances are not huge. - greggo

      Scooter
    18/04/2008 11:31
I have recently purchased a scooter. I could not afford a car and needed to get some independence. It is fantastic. R35 fills it and will keep it going for about 100km! Luckily I work 5km from home. 15 mins to work and back! Its fantastic. I recommend more people get these little run arounds and leave the cars at home. - Maxine

      Work from home
    18/04/2008 11:34
Another option that employers should consider is to let employees work from home. I know that this is not always an option, but where an employee is doing a desk bound job it is the way to go. In Europe and the USA, this is already a very popular option. - bokkie

      No scooter for me
    18/04/2008 11:39
I will have to go against the grain next year and buy a bigger car. Sometimes when I drive to a client I am on the freeway, carrying colleagues, with a boot-full of laptops and paper files. For a Fiat Uno 1100 with 250,000 km on the clock that is a bit of a strain. - James

      IS IT FREEDOM OF SPEECH
    18/04/2008 11:40
Why is it necessary to slag off a positive contribution? Hats off to Jody for the suggestion. It's a personal choice, take it or leave it. Thank goodness nobody managed to turn this one into a racial issue! - matt

      SMALLER CARS
    18/04/2008 11:41
Smaller cars are a very good idea as they save on fuel consumption. When driving your bigger cars you can use them during the weekends as that would be a shorter distance to travel and it would also be sutable if you have very important meetings, but lift clubs have allot of complications. - SLICK ICE

Make the roads safer for scooters
    18/04/2008 11:58
I think more people will drive scooters if roads safer. Vuka is the way..hehe - Boer

      Comments
    18/04/2008 12:05
How about everybody keeps there cooments to themselves and "work" for a change. - Worker

      I agree
    18/04/2008 12:05
I fully agree. Saliem - if you are so productive why are you toying around on the News24 site! Humbug! - Magic

      Scooters are great....
    18/04/2008 12:12
until you get caught in a typical highveld thunderstorm....or a taxi wants to use you for a hood ornament......or the buses want to turn you into roadkill. Then, it ain't so great. - jonathan

      Good On you Jody
    18/04/2008 12:31
Jody is correct. Lift clubs are definitely a good idea and an awesome solution to alleviating the Traffic costs/load on our roads. How many times do you see more than one person in the car on your way to work. We dont have a reliable and safe transport system in this country, therefore this is a great idea. - JoeSlow

      scooters...
    18/04/2008 12:32
The other great thing about riding a scooter is that load shedding and traffic jams are no longer an issue. - greggo

      No ways
    18/04/2008 12:41
Taking passengers with you becomes a burden, they either late in the morning or in the afternoon, the pay late or never, they cause a strain on your car, no ways, i rather drive alone and happy every morning - Hilton
