How big is the brain drain?
21/04/2008 11:59  - (SA)

  • Eskom on massive skills hunt
  • Brain drain hits Eastern Cape
  • Skills a necessity
  • Dear Editor,

Every day we hear of more and more people either leaving SA or planning to leave our country for greener pastures. It is very common now for people to have their children overseas and many of my friends are certainly in this category.

I have been attempting to find some reliable statistics on this matter but it is very difficult to extract such data.

I have been told that the departure forms at the airports do not require you to state your reason for departure any longer and if I am correct, the government has in fact stopped departure forms all together.

The information on the website of stats SA is also far behind and dated so I cannot get figures from that source.

Maybe some of the readers can comment on their experiences with people leaving and perhaps pass on advice on where one can find reliable statistics.

    "Stormin"
    Pretoria

      Aint seen nothing yet!
    21/04/2008 12:09
From all I can gather from speaking to friends and colegues... I estimate that 6 out of every 10 people I know plan to leave the country within the next year. I think if you total up the number of experienced professionals who have left the country since 1994, you'll have roughly the same number who will leave within the next two years! I myself am on the plane pretty soon. - Ernst

      Wish I could go too
    21/04/2008 12:11
Cant really answer you on that but as far as I know Gov stopped South Afrcans from having more than one passport so if you do wanna leave SA you cant go to any other place since you not allowed to have another passport. But if anyone can tell me how to get out of SA and go get safer grounds for my kids to play in please do tell me how i will give anything to leave this horrifc dark country!!! - wish

      Just leave!
    21/04/2008 12:14
Everyone who wants to go, just leave! I am going nowhere! I will stay here and work for my country till I die. - Sello

contradictory but you should try and balance the brain drian with the brain gain. That should give you the answer. - psycobabble

COntradtory Media. Amount of skills leaving vs skills coming in
    21/04/2008 12:17
ON cart Blanch the other day they aluded to the fact that about 800 000 skilled workers have left since 94. But I doubted this since nobody has ever kept stats which compared the amount of skilled individuals who have left versus the amount of skilled individuals who have migrated into the country for what ever reason..Its only then that we get a true reflection of skills defeciet in South Africa. Example is the same show recently estimated tha there were 200 000 UK citizens in SA. - True stats

      Brain drain?
    21/04/2008 12:17
What brain drain? There is no such crisis, why would well educated people ever want to leave here, just look at how well Zimbabwe is doing after their free and fair democratic elections. There are loads of very intelligent people in this country, just look at JZ and Manto... brilliant! - Vernon Wolf

      Emmigration

Would be very interested to know the reasons but i imagine the bulk being crime, BEE/AA and political reasons - John Camp

COntradtory Media. Amount of skills leaving vs skills coming in
    21/04/2008 12:21
Good luck.. everyone currently is running on emotional estimates, even the media. The only way would be to compare skills leaving vs the amount of skills coming in. - Mjavas

      Emigration
    21/04/2008 12:21
Stormin, unfortunately there are no official stats and depending on what newspaper you read there are either 2 families leaving for every 1 coming in, or vice versa. As a young black professional, I can honestly say that I don't know of anybody wishing to emigrate... - VG

      Please
    21/04/2008 12:25
I don't think you should worry about the number of people leaving this country but rather their impact on the economic growth ofthe country. Me thinks South Africa is much more stable in terms of economic growth & job creation, we have challenges but nothing that we can't resolve. If some people were to leave this country in large numbers we will be able to get economic emancipation sooner than we thought. African riches should benefit its indegious children and not former colonialists. - majakathata

My dentist told me that there approx.1300 dentists left in SA to service a pop.of approx. 40 million. There are 2500 SA trained dentists in London alone. - psycobabble

      Brain drain
    21/04/2008 12:31
Recently saw a document provided by Stats SA showing population numbers, etc. from 1969 through to 2007. I THINK this is the one I saw: http://www.statssa.gov.za/Publications/statsdownload.asp?PPN=Bulletin&SCH=4135 I have lost a large amount of friends through emigration - really sad that they no longer see SA as their home. - Dave Robbins

1 million have left between 1995-2005
    21/04/2008 12:33
I read somewhere a million people have left the country between 1995 and 2005. I would say at least two out of five highly skilled people are considering emigration. The Australia Expo at Galagher Estate was packed with people. It looked like a busy day at the Rand Easter Show. In our company's IT department of 50 people, three persons have left in the last two years and two more will leave within the coming year. - Frank II

      Another emotional and sensitised response.
    21/04/2008 12:33
The UK is also experiencing brain drain, those who bother to read will know this. Holland is also experiencing brain drain. Reasons will differ from person to person. People should also note that we have net import of skills from other African countries, these are people who have made it big in the US and Europe. These people don't want to go back to their countries but would not like to stay in Europe either, they find SA home from home. - Libembe

      Hi Sello
    21/04/2008 12:36
As usual, your comment adds nothing of any value to the discussion at hand. Stormin was looking for statistics, not copy-paste rhetoric. - Kev

      Ask Why? not How many?
    21/04/2008 12:37
Reasons for leaving are violent crime and corruption, failing infrastructure (roads, ESKOM) and the collapse of schools and hospitals. Racial discrimination in the work place force a lot of people to take their families overseas. The situation in Zimbabwe and our regime's approval doesn't make it better either. It places a big question mark over our 'democratic' future and only a fool would not be concerned. - Frank II

      Brain drain
    21/04/2008 12:38
Many people I know have been offered work in Oz, Nz, & UK. Myself included. I have been offered two jobs in NZ. I have accepted one of them and I am just waiting for my work permit and then I & family will be off. It is definitely crime that is the main factor. We can deal with load shedding, higher rates, fuel price & general prices of things. Every country has this to deal with. But the gruesome crimes that happen here is beyond belief! My children will be safer overseas in NZ, so we are going. - Stephen Gold

I am sure that many people have left S.A. for whatever reason, but frankly I dont think stats for skilled people will available anywhere. Its pretty difficult to keep tabs on skilled workers leaving.Anyone who has lived in London will know that there are 1000s of unskilled South Africans there who have used any method possible to remain there after their visas expired. - nWo

Hubby, myself and kids are on our way, just waiting for the sale of house (which could take a while thanks to the revolting economy) so SA is losing an Artisan with 26 years experience due to BEE employment policy and an executive assistant with 24 years experience and 3 very bright little boys who, if given the opp, would have been able to contribute to this country but they will never get the opp here. Also have 5 other friends (2 indian and a black couple included) who are leaving very soon... - Lau

You have hit the nail on the head. Some of the more richer, connected brain stay. My son, who was his prestigious school's Dux was headhunted by Microsoft. With two very small children, I would have made the same decision... they left. I'm never leaving..... ever, and I have brains. I run my own business at 61. Started it after we were wiped out my Masterbond. Takes a lot of guts, 7/7 work, very little sleep. - Alicia

The other countries are not experiencing a "brain drain" in the same way as SA. Their problem is continued economic growth and how many EXTRA or NEW people they need. SA loses the LITTLE it has. - Dries

      Brain Drain
    21/04/2008 13:21
My husband and i will know by the end of the week whether or not we have a job we applied for in Perth. Both being ex Zim we can see that SA is going down hill faster than Zim did. Secondly we do not want to hang around to become the next victims of crime. Between the two of us SA will be loosing 30 yrs experience...... We are not the only one's who feel this way, we have doctor & physio friends who are looking at Oz & Nz as well. - Safer pastures........

or maybe they only add a membership number on multiples of a hundred, and not all those people are leaving a fair number are problably just joining to laugh at your sad little community.. - me

      Crime
    21/04/2008 13:31
The one and only reason all the people I spoke to are leaving is VIOLENT CRIME. If JZ and that trigger happy woman and Gov can sort that out, 99% of the people would change their minds. This still is the best country in the world to stay in. If they can only remove the violence! - SortItOut

      Interesting article...
    21/04/2008 13:35
As a point of reference... just take a look at the latest new article on how emigration is affecting the property market on News24. Scary statistics! (For those choosing to stay behind). - Ernst

How big is the brain drain?
    21/04/2008 13:53
It's so funny how people esp. White folkes always use crime as the main reason of emigrating. What race is actually leaving the country in droves? Is it black/white? Did the leave after 1994? what's the real reason for them leaving? Plz refrain from using crime as the main reason for leaving SA and be honest. - mjero

      Where loyalties lie
    21/04/2008 14:02
My family and I are on our way to Saudi Arabia. As to the question where my loyalties lie.... well... The country of my birth has no loyalty towards me or towards my future children despite us being willing to positively contribute. I would much rather stay in South Africa but I am increasingly unwilling to risk my family's lives on it. - LJE

      Who Cares
    21/04/2008 14:18
What do you need the stats for. Migrtae and leave us in peace. SA is not the only country in the world losing skills. Once you all gone then there won't be anyone to hold us to ransom for their "skills". The goverenment must use this opportunity to empower the right people once and for all. Go and whilew you are there don't write to SA publications. We are not interested. Bye and good riddance. - Tebzano

Crime is the criminal. I have been lucky enough to go to many countries....save as houses. You breathe freely, you feel this heavy burden lifted off your back. I will never leave, but I thank God that my grandchildren are in a safe, beautiful place and can enjoy the freedom of fear. Here we ALL live in fear...YOU be honest. I have been hijacked twice, cars stolen, best friend murdered, father mugged, myself and my daughter beaten up, house robbed, many times. HELL does this not add up to FEAR!!!! - Alicia
