Be fair 21/04/2008 12:07
This does not just happen in Sport, but in ALL sectors of society. Ironically, the poor and the needy are the first to feel the 'benefits' of having incompetent leaders. - Juan |

Indian 20 20 21/04/2008 12:11
My understanding is that Jacques Kllis is playing in this Indian 20-20 league. Are we missing something here. How could he have played for the Cobras? - ST |

Justify 21/04/2008 12:13
VinnyTheSaffer can you please explain how " incompetent young players " managed to take the Cobra's to the final and doing so without loosing a game ?
Can you also explain how " Jacques Kallis, acknowledged internationally as the best cricketer in the world " who was unable to score any runs in his last 2 innings before the team for the Semi Final was chosen ?
What would your views have been had the " incompentent youngsters gone all the way ?" - VinnyIsAPlonker |

Um... what? 21/04/2008 12:14
VinnyTheSaffer... While I agree with your point. Fact is Jacques was unable to play... mostly because he is in India.

Agree. The only cause of such dump desitions is that players lost the ability to be an a mentally
higher level cause of a coach who does not know how to get them there. - jfky |

Sour loser 21/04/2008 12:21
Is it not the incompetent young players that got the Cobra's to the semi final in the first place? The proteas were out in India, senior players were away - the young guys deserve credit for taking their team so far in the competition. You cant simply change a winning team - had Shukri Conrad dropped 1 or two youngsters & played Kallis & had the team lost, people like yourself 'VinnyTheSaffer' would have been crying out loud and criticising.
Stop being a sour loser - 1 man doesnt make a team! - Brian |

Why Kallis & Boucher are in India 21/04/2008 12:24
ST, VinnyIsAPlonker & Robert all missing the point. Kallis (and Boucher) are in India because they were not needed by the Cobras. Graeme Smith is also supposed to be in India but came back specifically to play in the Pro20 semi-finals. Kallis & Boucher would have done the same if they had been deemed good enough to make the Cobras side. My gut feel (without any proof) is that one Norman Arendse had something to do with their ommission from the Cobras side.... - Peekay |

Always Next Year 21/04/2008 12:26
Dear Vinny the Tosser. As a long time WP supporter, I am well used to saying: "Oh well, there is always next year." My goodness, son... we reached a semifinal and lost by six runs in the last over in a match that yielded 310 runs in forty overs. You should be proud of the team, you silly man.
In two innings in india, Jacques has score 26 runs and conceded ninety in 8 overs. What difference do you think he would have made? - niels |

I think what Vinny meant to say was... 21/04/2008 12:28

Best of luck for the final

Hogwash 21/04/2008 12:28
Vinny, I'm sorry to say that you have it completely wrong and the only one to blame are the Cobras players themselves. In attempting to justify your position you can only muster up a single example i.e. Jacques Kallis How is it that the Cobras managed to destroy all who came before them and without the assistance of those playing for the Proteas? Whilst I am no supporter of quotas or AA in whatever disguise it takes, there is no doubt in my mind that your comments are racially aligned. - Campbell |

Unjust rewards 21/04/2008 12:28
What the Conrads of the world conveniently ignore, is that fans(also loyal) pay good money to see the BEST POSSIBLE cricket , support their team and hopefully watch them clinch the match. Obviously that's too much to ask. - SF |

Hogwash 21/04/2008 12:32
What a load of crap!! How can Vinny refer to 1st class cricketers who took the Cobras to the semis without loosing a game as "incompetent young players". Also, some of our "superstars", including Kallis, are playing in the Indian Premier League. - Idris Nomani |

agree 21/04/2008 12:34
i agree that players should earn their place, no matter what the colour of your skin. ST - if they went all the way then the best team was selected, but in this case the best team wasn't selected. regarding kallis - they didnt choose him for the semi final so he played in india. grahan smith also play in the IPL, but was selected for cobra's so will go to india later, same with stayn and de villiers - Wern |

Performance... 21/04/2008 12:34
I don't care who the current coach of the Cobra's is...just a thought...as wonderful a cricketer as Jacques Kallis is, how did he perform in the 1st 2 games of the IPL? He was smacked around the park, and his batting left much to be desired. Can't see how he would have done much better against the Titans. How is it that the Cobra's managed to get to the final without the fantastic Mr Kallis? Cricket does not revolve around individuals... - EmTee |

wrong 21/04/2008 12:34
so the guys who got them there should step aside for the superstars? a oke plays his butt off and then misses out on semifinals because the international players comes back. please man, the guys who got them there must play!! - johann |

Sharpen up on facts pls people. 21/04/2008 12:35
Vinny is right. Kallis had made himself available for the game, he would have returned from India and skipped the IPL games (at great cost to himself), to represent the Cobras. But he was not picked, so he stayed behind in India. Sukri Conrad is not fit to coach a High School 1st XI. Well said Vinny !! - Luke |

so true 21/04/2008 12:36
interesting take on an unfortunate situation .. yes kallis and boucher is currently in india playing ipl20-20 but both made themselves available for the cobras yet shukri decided not to use them ....poor cobras after beeing undefeated to lose out in the semi finals with an inexperienced side cos of loyalty ...... poor day for sa cricket - shy oo7 |

Get a life!!! 21/04/2008 12:36
I was at the game with my family and whilst i was sad that we lost, i certaibly didn't see any incompetent youngsters on the field. These guys did well to get us to the semi's, they all deserved to play. Jacques is making LOTS of money in Indiag, whilst they graft at home. Well done to Shukri and his boys...next time!!!! - Cobra Fan |
|
 |
| |
Vinny you just don't get it do you? 21/04/2008 12:36
1stly, your sarcasm is misinformed & misguided. Shukri Conrad must be commended for his courage to show loyalty to the players who got the Cobras to to the top of the log. 2ndly, unlike the national side, there is an imperitive on franchises (& teams lower down) to transform. The debate for me is rather, why were ANY of the national squad allowed to play in this phase of the competition? Finally, Shukri and his team are to be commended for their brilliant showing -well done! - saliem |
|
 |
| |
Oi Robert - You are clueless pal 21/04/2008 12:37
Fact is : Jacques would have returned from India if he had been picked. Cobras announced their team long before the semi and Kallis wasnt in it. Hence he stayed behind in India to earn real money. Sharpen up ! - Da Swoop |

The better team 21/04/2008 12:37
You can also just say that the Titans were better. But I agree with you 100%. The Cape franchise also has a few flashy, somewhat arrogant players. Whereas the Titans are a bunch of willing, capable youngsters who want to learn and play the game for the enjoyment of it under the wise old head of Pierre Joubert. BIG UP to Roelf vd Merwe for keeping his cool during that last over. International material!! - Benna |

I am Irritated Now 21/04/2008 12:38
SF... fans pay good money to see the best possible... just how many domestic games did you watch this season at the grounds? How on earth do you know that those who were at Newlands yesterday were not the best?
You news24 users should start using the brains the Good Lord gave you. - niels |

What Loyalty 21/04/2008 12:40
I find it an injustice to drop those players who where good enough to get the four teams to the semi-finals of the Pro 20 Twenty and then just drop them because players from the national side where available to play. Where is the loyalty to those players. The national team players cannot have it both ways. - Lionel |

Kallis in India because of he was left out of the Cobras???? 21/04/2008 12:42
Peekay.....Are you sure???Nothing to do with the fact that he and Boucher are getting a lot of money to be in India, but I could be wrong, I am sure that if given the chance to play for the great Cobra 20-20 side they would be real heros and turn down all that cash.. - lol |

Very unfair article... 21/04/2008 12:44
This article highlights the fact that there are many dumbasses in SA. Is the writer suggesting that a team that got to the semi finals of a tough competition (without their national players) are incompetent? Is he suggesting that Duminy is there to do his best while the likes of Kallis and Boucher are out of the country? No. Methinks he's just an ignorant cobras fan chewing on a very sour grape. - Nick |

Reply to lol - I am sure of my facts 21/04/2008 12:50
From Mark Boucher's own website
"Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher might be good enough for the Bangalore IPL franchise to justify paying almost US$1.5 million for them, but they are not good enough to make their domestic Twenty20 squad. Both are therefore staying in India and not returning home with the rest of the South African Test squad." - peekay |

Good enough 21/04/2008 12:51
Like said already, they were good enough to reach the semi's so they should have been good enough to win the semi - they did not, they were outplayed on the day and congrats to the Titans.
As for Shukri being 'less qualified' explain to me how the Cobras became MTN ODI domestic champs last year, made the final of the T20 last year, had a brilliant run (5 wins I think) in the Supersport series and made the semi's again this year?
Yes, and all of that under Shukri... - Morne |

Vinny!!! 21/04/2008 13:16
What are u on about???Its sickening to think that any coach in any competition would use a group of young players to get the team to the semi final, and then just dump them because some senior international players have become available.I have seen Arsenal do this yr in yr out with the league cup in the English premiership. How do u go about explaining to the young guys who fought so hard to get where they were that "suddenly" they are rubbish?? - nWo |

if smith had bothered to attempt to ground his bat he would probably not have been run out and this discussion would not be taking place - he was a lazy runner, as if he did not believe that he could be run out - I was at the game, it was an incongruous moment - michael |

Youngsters 21/04/2008 13:21
Both Mark and Kalis have proven themselves at the domestic level and all of South Africa do know what they are capable of producing on the field and on the other side we do need youngsters to be exposed to pressure situations like the Pro20 finalroud of matches to ensure that they can be groomed into world class players to take over from both Kalis and Boucher. - colin |

Vinny_you_da_man 21/04/2008 13:29

Thanks for tuning in for the semis 21/04/2008 13:33
Vinny, those supporters who had actually followed the season would know that those "incompetent" players went unbeaten through the league games. Upsets happen, the Titans played well, get over it. Kallis is hardly a T20 specialist, he was the only national player not selected. - Peter |

Disrespect 21/04/2008 13:37
I think it's disrespect to the players who have played their hearts out and the coach who has believed in them. With all respect to Kallis, I don't think the result would have been different had he played, especially with his current form. Vinny you should apologise!!! - Mandie |

Justify 21/04/2008 13:45
So why did they drop Stiaan van Zyl for a player who did not play in the other matches and were also in India and did not contribute to getting the team in the Semi-Finals.Kallis and Boucher is looking at playing for the Warriors next year , because they are not good enough for the Cobras. VinnyTheSaffer and his sour grapes 21/04/2008 13:48
Vinny, you idiot. Firstly I'm a proud Titans supporter, I was hoping they could give the Cobra's a run for their money but didn't expect a win. Hopefully your comments is a case of sour grapes (loser :-) ). Last night was just not their night. In my opinion Shukri strengthed his team where they show some shortcomings, although I would still have played Boucher. I think Shukri did a wonderful job with the youngsters and the Cobra's will reap the rewards in years to come. - Streaker |

Who are these incompetent young players 21/04/2008 13:59
Which players are you referring to? From what I saw, their experienced players did not come to the party, especially their bowling. Even Shukri's 1 error (another bowler) paid dividends with Duminy being the pick of their bowlers. Got over the loss, it happens to the best of teams. - FMF |
