Final countdown
06/05/2008 14:02  - (SA)

  • Rassie factor worries Waratahs
  • Boks: Laws will favour Wales
  • Bulls stars out of Bok picture?
  • Sharks need a try frenzy
  • Dear Editor,

At the beginning of the Super 14 season the national coach said at least three South African teams will be playing in the Super 14 Semi Finals.

Well by the looks of it, hopefully one will make it and that one might be the Stormers and that is if they can beat the Warratahs this coming weekend.

The Warratahs are coming out of a loss to the Bulls, but this could have been due to the altitude and jetlag etc. The tarnished Aussies will have something to prove not only for their club, but for all of Australian rugby come Saturday.

The only other South African hope would be the Sharks, but they need to beat the Chiefs come the 17th, and the Chiefs, Hurricanes and Stormers must all at least loose one game each and not score any bonus points. Considering the relative easy games the Hurricanes and Chiefs have this could be a high hope.

Looking at the log and the dismal performances of teams like the Bulls, Reds, Lions and Cheetahs, it would seem a done deal.

Seems de Villiers was wrong - at least two New Zealand teams will make the semis, one Aussie team and one South African team.

    Angus Norkie

      Prediction
    06/05/2008 14:10
Predictions are like farts. They sneek out of you and cannot be taken back and when they are discovered, the owner is utterly embrassed. - Lvh

      Talk is cheap
    06/05/2008 14:13
PdV has been talking a bit too much for a Springbok couch that still has to get his first test under the belt. - Rob

You cant criticise Pieter de Villiers...
    06/05/2008 14:15
...for his prediction. The Sharks and Bulls played in the final last year. The Sharks threw it away, the bulls' f$#king egos got the better of them. On paper we could have gotten 3 teams in the top 6 easily. - jannie

      Sharks fading
    06/05/2008 14:20
I just wonder where all those big mouth Shark supporters are now, especially after they gloated about the Bulls' dismal performance in this year's Super 14. However, with regards to Super 14 trophies it looks to me that it will still be Bulls 1 Sharks 0. - Hakuna Matata

      Brash Statement
    06/05/2008 14:23
I certainly hope De Villiers is an exceptional rugby coach, because he seems to say some stupid things! His statement before the start of the super 14, was to say the least a rank one. He has opened himself up to plenty of verbal abuse from the punters and I'm certainly going to be letting him have it. - Matt

      The Thuth
    06/05/2008 14:26
Where is the The Truth...that man made so much noise for Sharks...Hukuna Matata you are spot on here..I want to hear what the Truth has to say now that his team is seeing red.... - Kolobe

      Matt,Rob,LvH
    06/05/2008 14:30
When things are said and the opposite happens its easy to sit and bash the man to pieces. What you FOOLS (Matt,Rob,LvH) don't realise is that had Pieter said no SA teams will make the semi's, the same fools would have been up in arms saying thats a irresponsible comment etc. - Ian

      The Stormers
    06/05/2008 14:33
Has anyone, anywhere ever predicted exactly what the detailed outcome of a rugby, soccer or whatever tournament would be? Just wondering. I could not care less. I'll be glued to my television screen on Saturday, praying, sweating, jumping up and down, screaming and carrying on like a 16 year old. Anything, as long as it helps the Stormers to win. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with them. Play like you have never played before. All the luck in the world to the team and everyone involved. - Alicia

      Sharks Supporter!!
    06/05/2008 14:34
Here I am! I still maintain that the Sharks are by far the most CONSISTENT, and therefore best SA team in super rugby!!! It's good to see the stormers making a comeback though, they'll provide the Sharks with some local competiton for the first time in ages... - Athi

      Bulls and Stormers
    06/05/2008 14:34
You were stating the obvious, but thanx for the stats anyway. I also agree that Mr. de Villiers should get a couple of wins under the belt afore he makes prediction. BUT the Bulls and Stormers played awesome rugby this weekend. - charmaine

      The SHARKS supporters
    06/05/2008 14:35
3 Losses OUT of 12...Please people, lets start realising that that is a great record...Loss to brumbies(havent beaten them on their turf in ten years i think)Loss to waratahs, dubious refereeing, and a close game against the crusaders. Easy run in to semis though...you'll all see - THE SHARKS

      Take this Hakuna Matata
    06/05/2008 14:37
What is important to remember is that the sharks won their encounter with the Bulls. In fact the sharks won all encounters with SA Teams except the Cheetahs. - Die Hard Shark

      Bad decisions...
    06/05/2008 14:41
Don't blaem Pieter! He was correct, even though it was a tad ambitious. The Sharks and the Bulls are their own worst enemies and the problems should be laid with bad coaching (Bulls and Sharks)! Rassie got the best combinations going and it worked and chose a leader to get the best out of his team. The Bulls did the right thing by getting Wikus as cpt, but I see they went back to whinger du Preeuz - I predicy a loss after 2 wins under Wikus! And the Sharks? Well pick Steyn at inside Centre! - Johann

      Coach surfing
    06/05/2008 14:42
The performances of the Bulls, Sharks, Cheetahs and Stormers has had a great deal to do with their change of coaching staff. Only the Stormers has gained from the changes. From what I have heard of Mr De Villiers I am very sceptic on the influence he will have with the Boks. And appointing Smit has captain after he hasn't played all season is also a big risk. - Pierre Willemse

      Yes he was wrong!
    06/05/2008 14:43
The Bulls & the Reds did both the Sharks and the Stormers a HUGE favour this past weekend. Although i never believed that 3 SA sides would make semi's i still believe the Bulls, Cheetah's and now the Lions can "assist" in two SA sides making semi's. The question is WILL THEY? - John Camp

      Hakuna Matata
    06/05/2008 14:46
The Bulls can thank the f*(^king ref they won the Super 14 last year. Every rugby program after that showed that the Bulls stole the ball illegally which lead to the winning try. But that is past now....GO STORMERS!!!!!!! - jannie

      shame
    06/05/2008 14:46
I'd risk a prediction: This will be Frans Ludeke's last Super Rugby Season......ever......from my keyboard to Blue Bulls Management's ears.... - h

      Hakuna Matata
    06/05/2008 14:49
Nice one Hakuna Matata!! The sharks supporters have gone silent during the last few weeks. I wonder why??? - Die Griek

      Big mouths?
    06/05/2008 14:55
Hakuna Matata,I'm one of those big mouths about the Sharkies.Stand up,your voice is muffled. With the bulls being last years champs and their current standing on the log shows us only one thing. It was a flash in the pan.The bulls, cheetahs and lions should be relegated to the currie cup.The Argentinians or Pacific islanders should be broughtinto the comp instead.Sure the Sharks probably wont win it but at least they've been more consistent on the log than the other teams over the years. - psycobabble

      @ h
    06/05/2008 14:56
Dear Mr h.The blue bulls management would like to inform you that our coach Frans Ludeke will remain for another season, so that he can be given enough time to try our combinations.we apologise for the recent losses but we remain loyal to our head coach Frans Ludeke.. - Blue Bulls Management

      Final Countdown
    06/05/2008 15:00
Angus, so what! Is he the first coach of any team not to get a prediction right? What about Sir Alex or Jose Mourinho? Are they now bad managers as a result? South African rugby supporters are such a negative bunch, it is unbelievable that a bok team can actually do well despite its supporters (and I use that term loosely). No doubt you are one of those people who get a kick out of other peoples' failure and say things like "I told you so"... Schadenfreude in German. - Kevin

      Fair?
    06/05/2008 15:02
He's not even coach yet and PdV has to put up with critics. Always criticising the Springbok coach... I don't understand our rugby supporters. PdV didn't say there WILL be 3 teams in the semis... he said there COULD. And there was nothing wrong with thinking that. Looks like there might be 2. So he's hardly looking like an idiot. - chops

      Spot me.....
    06/05/2008 15:05
In the wave of Sharks supporters at Loftus!!! Gee where all the bull fans....SHARKS SUPPORTER FOREVER!!!! - Win

      Stormers All the way
    06/05/2008 15:06
The Sharks and Bulls supporters always have a big mouth when their teams are winning. But when losing they seem to find excuses. If anyone really follows rugby and look at behind the scenes the new laws suites the fittest players and that is the Stormers. The Bulls and Sharks both have these big headed players who are to lazy to tackle the oppersition. - Ray

      Athi & Hakuna Matata
    06/05/2008 15:14
Provide the Sharks with some local competition? When last did the Sharks even play in the final of our top local series, the Currie Cup? I'm a Cheetah supporter (proudly) and we always do badly in the Super 14 and shine in the Currie Cup. So in the local sides I think we're more than a match for the Sharks (who, incidently, is my 2nd team). Hakuna: you're a typical example of a Bulls supporter, and no, it's not a compliment. - Chantelle

    06/05/2008 15:21
It seems that all the Big mouthed on this forum are Sharks supporters...The Truth,Win etc..I wonder what team does Juan support??? Athi you must change and support the Stormers - Kolobe

      Angus???
    06/05/2008 15:26
Please research your fact. He said "up to three teams" not at least. Why did the lions fire ludeke, because he couldn't coach at super rugby level and the bulls thought it was a great idea so get him as their coach, well he took a winning team and did a great job turning them into a losing team - Wern

      @ Kolobe
    06/05/2008 15:30
Which team do you support??? - jannie

      That this Chantelle
    06/05/2008 15:37
The main reason the Sharks never make it to the Currie Cup final is on account of the number of Springboks they loose when the boks are on tour then or during the season building up to then. - Die Hard Shark

I am not in a mood to fight today and being called a fool often brings the worst out of me. I was merely offering a humourous look at predictions and not criticising Peter de Villiers. Predictions are just that, Predictions. No reason to hang someone as if they took an average team and turn it into chumps, as some coach has done. Take a pill, bro and chill. - Lvh

Please enlighten me as to what your definition of a "typical example of a Bulls supporter" is. Perhaps someone that dare criticize supporters of other teams when their arrogance backfires on them. I feel for you - you probably listen to OFM as well!! - Hakuna Matata

If all the "big mouths" support the Sharks, then how come you don't as well? Have faith in the Sharks my friends, its all we have left (after all,we always have the Stormers to fall back on if things don't go well). - The Truth

      BULLS !!!!!
    06/05/2008 15:49
To all you poor sharkies that still mouns about the final of last year , get over yourself please.... it is getting boring. If Frans steyn slotted the converstion right in front of the polls( with 1 min to go) , the last try wouldn't have even mattered. So blame your guppies and not the ref like sore loser!!!!!!!! BULLS forever - Marc S

      Allow me my 2cents worth
    06/05/2008 15:52
Rassie Erasmus must be some kind of coaching genius - taking the Stormers from stone last to where they are now in such a short period. I realise it is a team effort and there are a lot of people involved. The Stormers have also done well from the dubious transformation angle as well!Regardless us Capies of all hue's are 100% behind our team. After the last few years it is nice to feel like this about our team again. Thanks Rassie - Go get em Stormers - Mikey

    06/05/2008 15:57
Finally The Truth speaks...It took you almost two hours before you can comment...Finally you have realised how pathetic your team really is my friend..Last season you robbed the Bulls..that trophy does not belong to the Sharks in the first place...How pathetic the sharks are... - Kolobe
