Ai, Rielle 07/05/2008 08:46
Do you really believe that a government can allow people to squat just wherever they like? Have you ever thought of the consequences of such an approach? Chaos an total lawlessness. There are still a few people left in the RSA who are strying to live by the laws of the country (even though some new laws are ridiculous)although the numbers seem to be dwindling rapidly. - DrDoLittle |

Compassion 07/05/2008 08:50
Rielle, yor compassion is touching and I don't think there is a short term humanitarian solution to squatters, worldwide. However, these people have to realise or be shown that simply plonking down their modest belongings and setting up "home" where it suits them is unacceptable. How long will a "first world" city remain such if people are allowed to squat where they see fit? If these people were setting up "home" on a vacant piece of land next door to your home, would you be so understanding? - Sean |

I feel you 07/05/2008 08:50
Warning or not is it really necessary to burn their meagre belongings? It costs more but how about relocating these people to another area and helping them rebuild their shacks? That's the kind of service I expect for the poor when I pay my taxes - not to be humiliated like that. Of course in a perfect world I'd like nice little houses to be waiting for them. Clean water and sanitary services too... One day they will. - May |

There are countless numbers of us who feel as concerned as you for these poor people, and yes, I do believe that each one of us can make a difference in some small way. Sadly though, these are the people who have put corrupt individuals into power believeing that they would make a difference and provide them with long awaited houses, etc. and yes, they have provided some relief for the masses...after taking the lions share for themselves. Ever noticed how black beggars don't beg from blacks. - Me2 |

With the cops burning their houses down , But I fully blame the govermunt. Agree and disgree with Joe 07/05/2008 09:03
I agree it is the governments fault, to a certain extent. The homes they promised to build in 1994 are occupied by illegal and legal immigrants from the rets of Africa, who the government welcome with open arms. Like South Africa is a welcome place to come squat. Where were all these Squatters staying before they squatted ? - Geoff |

Same happened on a property of mine few years back , A few sqautters moved in over weekend and next thing I knew there where thousends , I could not do anything , I eventually lost the property ,as I was getting bills for water and stuff. I gave up tghe property and lost a few million rand. Why I had to give up a property after the govermunt promised the people land I would not know , But lesson learned , I find sqauters ion my property I will remove them forcefully if needed !! - tiekies |

You can do something 07/05/2008 09:06
Rielle,
I can feel the sadness in your email, but we can do something about these evictions. Consider that you have a home and probably do not use all the land and rooms available to you. Perhaps you can take in some of the squatters into your home and you can provide all the services they need and ensure that they do not go hungry or cold. - Lvh |

Problem 07/05/2008 09:09
If they are allowed to squat on the embarkment, someone will complain to the police that they are causing a nuisance. We also need to provide services like water and sewerage. While some of the people are genuine, many are probably illegal or simply people wanting to create their own community and rules. We need to understand the phenomenon before we criticise or agree with these policies. - Len van Heerden |

I have a job and a place to live but sometimes I struggle to make ends meet. And for all the people calling the shots, try to do the humane thing when it comes to taking down somebody's shelter. - Concerned |

Question for May 07/05/2008 09:12
If these people were to squat in a piece of land you own and refuse to move despite all attempts at communicating with them, what would you suggest? Yes, it is very hard to imagine that anyone would intentionally live in squalor posing a risk to themselves, but imagine that the more houses are built, the more individuals build shacks to catapult themselves into the list for a second home. - L |

Geoff asks the right question. Where were they before they decided to squat on the land? If it was my property I would want them removed. At the same time I feel for these poor people. Your values vs Squatter values. 2 sides to story. 07/05/2008 09:47
Sorry, but I am of the opinion that the squatters brought it on themselves. These squatter camps are zest pools of criminals. This is fact! Yes, they need schelter and sustenance, but considder where they / most originate from. Urbanisation is one of the problems, another is mass movement of people by authorities as a strategy to downgrade previously privileged areas and forced integration. ANC Strategy to take over and govern everything. Dont believe me, then study past history since 1994. - Matrix |

Human rights v/s Property Rights. 07/05/2008 09:49
Our bill of rights guarantees people certain human rights e.g. food, shelter etc, however we should balance these rights with those of right to own property and should be protected. The dept of social welfare should have been consulted first to ensure that these people are taken care of. The police are right to protect and enforce property ownership, however they should do so in a civilised way i.e. consult with relevant authority ensuring that alternative shelter is offered. - Libembe |

Angry with this governments failures 07/05/2008 09:49
I am so angry at the way this government has squandered the fantastic opportunities it had on coming to power in 1994.
It has failed these poverty-stricken people and so many others with it's consistent failure to deliver anything close to what was promised.
Had the ANC tackled issues like poverty in a meaningful way, such scenes would be a thing of the past today. They however have been too busy feeding at the trough of self-enrichment to give a damn! - Stewart Wood |

They have been doing it for years. Someone has to stop them. I recall terrible incidents in Selby years ago. And they are self righteous and will not listen or show any mercy. The government must make alternative accomodation. The problem is that the government forget they are there to execute the business of the people of South Africa, they delude themselves into thinking that they are now the kings and the people are the serfs and we must kow tow to their limited mindsets and conciousness. - Eden |

Not racist, only practical !!! 07/05/2008 09:54
If there was a fair, unbiased and non-racist government in place, promises of housing would be implemented and not just promised. Breeding to up numbers is short sighted & all loose in the end. I still believe that RSA problems can be resolved with a change in ATTITUDE. - Matrix |

Answer for L 07/05/2008 09:58
Yes I have dealt with squatters on my property. I am not saying the law does not apply but questioning whether its necessary to burn their belongings. Try coming up with solutions rather. - May |

Thank you for a well written article Rielle. It has highlighted the growing lack of humanistic thought amongst those who bear the title of human beings. Burning belongings 07/05/2008 10:08
To all those who complain about the burned belongings: I think you will find, upon investigation, that the police burned the means to build the shacks, and not the belongings - it is against the law, as well as the constitution, to burn others' belongings. Burning the parts of the shack is the only way to stop the rebuilding of the same shack in the same location. In Lenasia South they have been trying to move the squatters there for about 4 years - every time they try, the squatters riot. - carel |

The govt`s plan to house the majority poor population by 2014 was a step in the right direction but somewhere along the line they got sidetracked by allowing millions of foreigners into the country at free will and by so doing made this and unachievable goal cos where to these "new south africans" stay, they too need housing, they`ve shot themselves in the foor where and failed us real south africans by selling us out to foreigners. - fatman |

Being a farmer I know all about squatters living on your land. Nice humane article Rielle, but to Marlene, Thabo etc, these probably AREN'T the people who rob and rape. Robbers usually have enough money not to squat in such circumstances! Even though i do not condone the actions of the cops(burning the belongings of the squatters), i think it is totally unacceptable for people to occupy any land they come across. Whilst these are the poorest of the poor there must be a system that allows for accomodating of squtters. It is just unfortunate that people erect shacks with the hope of getting free housing.Ther's a loophole in the whole system and people are using it so that when evicted they blame the gov.has nothing to do with humour - Mathibela |

Humanity? 07/05/2008 10:39
Once again a case of two wrongs does not make a right. The sad thing is that the government of the day cannot or show no willingness to sort out the real problems. It is much easier to blame the very old horse called "Apartheid" or just put their heads in the sand hoping it will go away. All we can do is to pray for a Godly intervention and as South Africans assist them who suffer. I think many people are tired of giving to the ungreatfull which make it very difficult to do the right thing. - Hattie van Jaarsveld |

Every 3rd world country is prone to this. China introduced a policy of 1 family, 1 child many years ago.. look at the result. Why must 20% of the population support 80%? Rather than just critisizing and blame shifting go out and help. It is not just the governments responsibility to help the poor it is everyones. - Jumbo |

Its not the governments faults, its ... 07/05/2008 11:33
the every people being evicted thats to blame 'cos they continue to support/defend the very people that made these promises. During the elections, they were promised houses but nothing was delivered. Instead of getting houses, money is being spent on a holiday for our Dep. President in Dubai, arms deals, Eskom, lawyers to defend a scum metro police chief, the list is endless. - Alvin |

Illegally parking my car and illegally squatting are two different things. No, I do not agree with burning their possessions, if that is really what happened. From the letter, I am not really sure whether it was the police that burned something or someone wanted sympathy by starting a fire. We do not know, don't we? - L van Heerden |

Type slowly and take a couple of breaths. Your writing lacks in logic and intelligence.
The government did not promise land. It promised redistribution of land to those that had valid claims and promised houses. There is a difference between a house and land, even though the house might be on land. There are flats and other forms of accomodation that put less premium on land. Chill and stop smoking. - L |

My problem with all of this is that the author makes no claims about really knowing what happened. I think we need more facts before we jump to conclusions. I do not advocate burning of people's belongings as I do not advocate illegal squatting whether by South Africans or Zimbabweans. - LvH |

Keyword is ALLOCATED. If something has been allocated, it means it is not available for housing. Now, perhaps you can give me an idea of whether you understand how our budget is spent? The USA does not build houses and yet collect more money, while borrowing more. Odd that when teachers want salary increase, they also demand a piece of this pie as do those who want water, electricity and other items of convenience. - LvH |

Does that mean you are renouncing your membership now, or will you reward them again next election, despite your disgust. If you are sticking by them, thenyou are a part of the problem. Government does not care because it does not have to care. Mindless support ensures this. - AJ |

The claim is that the government did not build any houses as they promised. Whether houses in 1994 and 2008 are different is immetarial. The issue was the promise and whether such a promise has been carried. I argue that this has been done and do not remember a promise afterwards that they will build a million more. - LvH |

I think you are misinformed about government can deliver and whether governments can actually end poverty. In the USA, which has far more resources, there is still poverty. Same with Britain. At the same time, countries with no poverty tend to be shunned by the rich because of the high taxes. Cannot have it both ways. - LvH |

I think you derive too many conclusions from a short paragraph. Try reading what is read without putting your own conclusions. Address the facts and not cynism or implications. The sooner we deal with facts, the sooner we will agree on solutions.
Not all illegal squatters are genuine. - L |

Second homes 07/05/2008 11:51
I know poor people with more than 1 home. some have homes in the former homelands and come to the city to get a hoise. Obviously, not all of the, but no doubt some in the group have ulterior motives. No one has addressed the possibility that these people are undocumented illegals.
We expect the cops to address crime, but only if we feel good about their tactics - Len van Heerden |

I bow to your supposedly superior financial knowledge LvH 07/05/2008 12:00
If you know so much perhaps you should be working in the department of finance (if you aren't already). You have still not answered my question regarding why much of the allotted funding has not been spent by the departments concerned (some of it dating back years)? If its not through pure spite then it just downright incompetence,mal-administration and mismanagement. All hallmarks of our current "democracy". - The Truth |
