LETTER
What about the employees?
07/05/2008 11:25  - (SA)

(Die Burger)
  • Flights of fancy
  • 'I can't believe it'
  • Q&A: A bleak future for Nationwide?
  • Dear Editor,

All the articles that I have read so far relate to either customers not getting refunds or other airlines taking up surplus business. Has anyone given thought to the 1 188 Nationwide employees that are all of a sudden without work?

I personally feel angry about the way we as staff got treated by Nationwide airlines management for the following reasons:

    1) Quite a few of us did not receive our salary for the month of April.

    2) The only communication that I personally received from Nationwide Airlines management concerning the filing for voluntary liquidation was an e=mail concerning "How we must address the media", nobody gave us even a hint with what will happen to us as people.

    3) If it's not enough that I have not been paid, Nationwide will not even issue me with a letter that I can present to my bank as some type of explanation as why I am not able to pay my dues.

This is not the first time I work for a company that shuts its doors but what Nationwide management did to us as employees is completely unacceptable, how can it be that without warning we just get told "take your personal belongings and go home, we will contact you if anything changes" .

Wednesday the 30th of April 2008 will be remembered by me as a very depressing day .I will never forget some of the grown men, guys that were usually full of energy, life and passion for their respective work, weeping like babies.

To all my colleagues, I just want to take this opportunity to wish you good luck and I pray we never work for such a terrible company again!

    Jobless

      Ag shame!
    07/05/2008 11:36
From what I've experienced and heard: Nationwide employees are the the rudest/unsympathetic and most unhelpful of all! - Karma SUCKS, doesn't it, huh? - Juan

      It must be frustrating....
    07/05/2008 11:37
The only thing I heard about employees was that the provisional liquidator will take care of them since then nothing..anyway sorry what can we say..Interesting enough is the fact fact that Nationwide hope for a BEE deal to bail them out..Can you believe it..A BEE deal to bial out white led company.. - Kolobe

      I hear you
    07/05/2008 11:41
I definitely agree with Jobless as I am in the same position. Income lost overnight and no one to even speak to about it. It is really pathetic and so sad but we can do nothing. Let Mr Bricknell take his money and stuff up some more peoples lives. I wish that people took this in their own hands and gave him the beating of his life. I will volunteer for that if I see him in the street. He knew this was coming and took all the passengers money for flights that they will never get to go on. Shame! - Agreed

      Have hope.
    07/05/2008 11:41
I too was part of a large and sudden company shut down (800 persons). My collegues & myself were gutted & extremly angry with management. Have hope, this too will pass. Staff will be positioned elsewhere, the anger will fade. Perhaps Mr. Vernon Bricknell might even be forced to sell a porche or two. - Sarah

I feel for all you employees...
    07/05/2008 11:44
I say throw all the members of management in jail and take away all their assets, sell it and compensate all employees. The CEO Vernon Bricknell must not get away with this. Those mother*&#%^%D from Saambou should also have been jailed. - jannie

      Nationwide
    07/05/2008 11:44
Jobless, i feel so sorry for you. I wish you the best of luck in finding a new job and pray that you find something quickly. Its really sad to see how some companies treat their employees. You sweat and work hard for years... and then they simply discard and ditch you. Shame on you NATIONWIDES Management and especially the CEO !!! - Ian

      Re; Sudden jobless employees
    07/05/2008 11:47
Yes, most people only think of how this sudden end of Nationwide's operations immediately affects them, but I am sure there is a lot of people(Like me),who immediately felt shocked and I felt like crying for those previously employed there. My second thought was on how many more companies are going to be next here in SA the way things are going now.I pray the Government and Unions together will be able to work out a plan to protect employees of such demise.Who knows if my company is next. - Withyou

      investors could come to rescue
    07/05/2008 11:47
my prayers are with you at this difficult times. let us hope that as they there are investors interest in taking over Nationwild - donald mogotsi

      Jobless
    07/05/2008 11:56
When I 1st heard the news, I was shocked at how they could be allowed to just close their doors & tell staff to leave. Surely there should be laws against this sort of thing? The CEO knew for a long time about their bad financial situation, but they still accepted money for flights which they knew would never materialize. I'm really sorry about your situation & cannot imagine how terrible it must be for you. Wishing you the best of luck & hope you find employment very soon. - Paul

      Good luck
    07/05/2008 11:59
My significant other and I were supposed to return to Johannesburg on Monday. Luckily we had to the means to get home last night on another airline. It was inconvenient. Losing your job is not inconvenient. It turns your whole world upside down. Three months ago I was in the exact same position. I was without work after a ruthless employer left us out in the dark. I feel your anger & frustration. Hang in there! It won't be easy, but know that a lot of us are thinking about you! - Stranded

      Juan you idiot
    07/05/2008 11:59
This was very stupid of you Juan...this poor person is Jobless, pennyless and frustrated all you can say is that???you are an unsympathetic idiot I have ever come across...You need to grow you idiot and start commenting like an adult...people should stop making jokes of others misfortunes...Be ashamed of yourself... - Kolobe

      Nationwide Employees
    07/05/2008 12:04
weeping like babies<---the more I think about this the more I hope you are exaggerating. - frank

      Jannie - not so easy.
    07/05/2008 12:06
Not so easy to strip management of pesonal assets. They have been VERY clever in the setting up of the company, & their own personal assets are hidden under layers of paperwork. Rich people usually stay rich by treading on the civil rights of the poor. - Sarah

      @Kolobe
    07/05/2008 12:06
Do take a moment from your day filled with racism and hatred, and have a look at Donald's comment. He addressed the same point as you, from another side. If only we had more people like him in this world! - Stranded

      jannie
    07/05/2008 12:07
I told you in the beginning that BEE comnpanies are much safer for your investments...their companies continues to sour like eagles whereas white led companies bite the dust...Invest in BEE companies like Sipho Macozoma,Patrice Motsepe,Tokyo and you will never go wrong... - Kolobe

      My heartfelt condolensces Jobless...
    07/05/2008 12:18
I hope and pray that the company gets a lifeline and that all of you get your jobs back soon. The more competition SAA has the better for all of us. - The Truth

      Understanding your plight
    07/05/2008 12:18
Having recently experienced a similar scenario, I feel your pain and anger! I was an unfortunate employee of Lightedge Technologies, who was not paid a salary for February and lost additional months of income whilst trying to secure a new job, which luckily I have. What is the most scandalous part is that some Lightedge directors almost immediately set up new companies, whilst their ex-employees still await monies due. Said scumbuckets clearly have much R's & can now screw new employees! G'luck! - KimPossible

Never mind the employees - What about the CEO ?
    07/05/2008 12:19
Personally, My thoughts are with the CEO. How many of you employees actually know what is going through the CEO's mind at this time ? Huh ? I've been in the shoes ..not funny ! Sleepless nights, acid eating your stomach lining and everyone baying for your blood. Employees are leeches...they suck and suck and don't give a toss where the bucks are coming from...that's why they are employees. Start up your own companies..if you have the guts and feel what it is like to worry. - Nguruve - Bushpig

      I know the feeling
    07/05/2008 12:20
I have been retrenched three times in my previous career. Each time I knew the reasons, but it did not help when I was desparately trying to find another job. I wish you, and all former Nationwide employees the best of luck. - James

      Kolobe, come on...
    07/05/2008 12:20
Who cares if the Nationwide CEO was a white dude, the company was poorly run from the top down. Its a good thing that there was no one to bail them out, regardless of their CEO's race. The Nationwide pilots will find work with Emirates or Etihad; the other employees will be absorbed by domestic airlines. Nationwide was always the epitome of a budget airline, except without the tenacity of a RyanAir, Southwest Airlines, or even the surprisingly efficient Mango; sometimes SAA get things right! - Ryan Matthews

Sorry to hear about you jobloss
    07/05/2008 12:21
I hope you find as job soon ,All the best . - bongani

BEE the best companies in South Africa...
    07/05/2008 12:21
When your company does not engage BEE deals then you must know that you are destined for a crash..move to BEE companies folks they hardly go bankrupt like many white led companies...LOL - Kolobe

      Is Kolobe Jon Qwelane?
    07/05/2008 12:26

      Stink of political games...
    07/05/2008 12:29
Sad that people should be affected in the games... - ElectroMan

      @ Kolobe
    07/05/2008 12:29
In your previous article you almost made sense. Now you start again with the biased and RACIST comments. BEE was a new business venture to renew Nationwide. What happened, the BEE did NOT honour their commitment. Who are the badies now? There are many uncertainties at the moment. I hope there is still hope for the employees of Nationwide, but advise them not to do nothing but try to get alternate employement in the interrim. Kolobe. do you know of something to help them? Regardless of their race! - Matrix

      Clowns among us...
    07/05/2008 12:30
Like "Kolobe" - your name suits you but needs a prefix "racist". You conveniently forget most BEE companies are still held in majority by previously advantaged shareholders and managed by them (I am not ignoring the top brass who are mostly black appointees from the puppetmasters and just figureheads due to their connections and not necessarily competence). We are just entering a difficult economic period - let's see how well your "black-led" companies do during trying times... - Tuffy

      Ryan Matthews and Stranded
    07/05/2008 12:34
Allow me to pride myself with BEE's...They hardly go bankrupt friends..while the so-called capable management bite the dust...SAAMBOU,FIDENTIA,NATIONWIDE and compare that to zero banrupt BEE's....BEE ROCKS GUYS..admit that...airlines refuses to transform in fact what I hear is that this Nationalwide was one of the most untransformed airline in South Africa... - Kolobe

      Re: Kolobe
    07/05/2008 12:35
Nationwide's a dodgy/unsafe airline. They ALSO treat theire customers like crap. (I know this from experience and go to hellopeter.com and read up on it.) When flights were cancelled/delayed the 'employees' showed NO sympathiy and was downright arrogant and rude. Now that the wheel has turned, WHY should we feel sorry for them?! - Juan

      If that's true Kolobe...
    07/05/2008 12:36
then its only because they are continually getting bailed out by the government using taxpayers money.Your general knowledge is almost as bad as your rugby knowledge (I said almost). - The Truth

Oh yes, and by the way Kolobe, another fine mess
    07/05/2008 12:37
The ANC Gov got Nationwide into. They have not planned for alternate energy sources. RSA does have SASOL, and access to alternate technologies. But, what do they do? They enrich themselves in stead of helping organisations to create & keep jobs / employement. This cost, regulation & control of fuel is another example of this. Fix this and Nationwide & employement may return. Vote for representative party. Oops, does not yet exist due to individuals like you! - Matrix

kolobe if i may ask bra
    07/05/2008 12:37
what does this article have to do with bee, and no offence to being black and proud but i know of plenty black businesses going under and plenty of white businesses doing very well. - jabu

      Juan
    07/05/2008 12:42
Juan you are and idiot. For once i agree with Kolobe. I have flown Nationwide before and had no troubles. You probably heard one friend complaining about one bad experience with one bad employee, and now you say that all Nationwide employees deserve what happened? What if one idiot CEO in your company screws up and you lose your job as a result? Should we say " sorry for you Juan, but you worked for that company... you deserve it"? - darkchylde

      so what
    07/05/2008 12:42
if nationwide was not transformed they shouldnt have to if they dont want to right? we all know BEE deals are corrupt and for your info woorking for government i know plenty of BEE companies that went bankrupt due to corruption and mismanagement - terence

      JUAN
    07/05/2008 12:47
Why should we feel sorry for the employees Juan? Poor service angers us all and it is unfortunately becoming the norm in SA, HOWEVER do you really believe the employees are being justly punished for their lack of service and empathy - by losing their livelihoods - possibly losing homes, not having food for kids etc.? You are truly pathetic! - KimPossible

      Kolobe, dude relax...
    07/05/2008 12:50
I was saying that most BEE deals are smart. Last week, Lion Matches sold their stake in KimberleyClark back to the company. Why? Well, they had made enough money, could see the KC's stake in Africa was shrinking, and are looking for further investment opportunities elsewhere. Fair deal, no? And airlines in South Africa: SAA has a black CEO, kulula.com and 1time have white CEOs... black/white, who gives a crap buddy boy. Personally, I prefer 1time over the rest, but that's just me. - Ryan Matthews

      Kolobe = Troll
    07/05/2008 12:51
If anybody hasn't noticed, Kolobe is a classic forum troll. The best method to deal with him would be to ignore him altogether. Just to touch on the BEE topic, in my opinion, (and yes, I'm WHITE) it's a corrupt system. Many companies stand to lose (or have lost) business (in spite of the fact that they do their job properly) just because they don't have a black partner. There is no justification for that. - Nigel

      Race Card
    07/05/2008 12:51
...Boring with all this race issue. This is becoming disgusting and embarrassing.Cant we just have a forum with positives without all this race nonsense. - Thusla

      Kolobe - Dodgy BEE companies
    07/05/2008 12:53
How about that "BEE company" that won a HUGE contract to wash hospital linen? Ended up, the guy took the millions, then hired a few ladies, to wash all the linen in a bathtub, without soap. Sure, BEE companies are profitable, but at what cost? - Sinudeity

      Juan
    07/05/2008 12:56
Why should you feel sorry? You gave the answer in your first comment: KARMA. Hah. Karma will come back to bite YOU in the ass because you're so nasty. Ever thought of that? Not all Nationwide's employees are rude. Every company has rude employees, think about that... - Chantelle

Juan - you got it wrong
    07/05/2008 12:57
As a passenger who has flown Nationwide twice a week (with a few minor exceptions) for the past two and a half years, I feel well qualified to to comment on the attitude of Nationwide staff members. I never experienced any arrogant or rude behaviour from any Nationwide employee. The service I received was always friendly and courteous. I am sorry to see the airline go down. - Retief

      @ bushpig
    07/05/2008 12:58
Don't shed too many tears for Mr. Bricknell, he has been very canny in the way the business was set up, and this will in no way dent his fabulous lifestyle. He spared no thought to morals when setting up his business in a way that there would be no recourse against him when the s**t hit the fan. - Sarah

      Kolobe
    07/05/2008 12:58
So you're saying don't support white owned companies? Even though they are BEE compliant? So if everyone listened to you, they'll stop supporting them. What will happen then? Many black and white employees would lose their jobs. Companies can be owned by whites, wake up. Stop dragging in race into everything! You have a better iq than that! - Chantelle

      Kolobe..
    07/05/2008 13:04
Kolobe, as you will point out so quickly to others, do some research. Do you remember Pepsi in the period from 1995 to 1997? Mmm, and try and look up some wine farms/cellars that went bust, for good measure google some investment companies. In fact look at Eskom, telkom too. That is not the point though, companies fail for various reasons (other than race believe it or not) that is a reality. To loose your job is bad, have a little bit of apathy for jobless and save us the BEE validation antics. - Chazz

      Disregard my last post please...

    07/05/2008 13:13
My sympathies to you Jobless.Unfortunately these things happen and hope you can recover soon.If they had employed Kolobe they could have cut down on hanger costs as his mouth is so big one could fit 4 737's in it at once and saved the company using bee.Good luck! - psycobabble

      Juan are you real?

Juan, an eye for an eye ? is this what you call it?. People are devastated and you gloat over their misery. You are unbelievable let alone heartless. Its people like you who turn this world into a hell hole. - CB

      Don't worry
    07/05/2008 13:18
Don't seek out the CEO or anyone, it's not for you to take revenge. Hold on, and although this will be a tough time for you all, never give up.You will be so grateful that this job came to an end, because something greater is waiting out there for you all, only you can't see it just yet, be patient, be thankful for what you got and most impotant of all, hold on! - Dumas

      Kolobe AGAIN
    07/05/2008 13:18
And you have the audacity to insult Juan for his comment when all you can add is some lame, TOSS, drivel about BEE. To the author of this article, i wish you good luck with your future ventures. - John Camp

      Be careful, Juan
    07/05/2008 13:26
With the kind of comments you post, perhaps it is you who should worry about karma. - Jaco

      Unbelievable
    07/05/2008 13:27
I can never understand you whole lot. A person is grieving and you scumbags are busy debating the race issue. And for those who gave funny comments I say wait until unemployment knock on your doors, you will not know what hit you. I cant believe this you are all funny people. - CB

      Race
    07/05/2008 13:50
Good article, shows us the other side of the coin. Why do people always have to bring race into everything??? Good luck to all the Nationwide employees Black, White, Colored and Indian!!! - Conrizzle

      Sympathy
    07/05/2008 13:50
I have never been in a similar situation but I get scared just thinking about it. The skilled employees will probably be snapped up quickly since we have a skills shortage. The low paid general workers if there are any will probably struggle. Good luck to all those affected. By the way where does BEE and race fit in this discussion? Some people on this forum are realy hopeless - Olivia
