Cape Town 'passes Go'

  • Vote to get Joburg on board
  • Will Cape Town make it to No 1?
  • CT dicing for new Monopoly spot
  • Dear Editor,

Hasbro has just released the results from the Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition and Cape Town has been confirmed as being third on the list. Cape Town will sit on the last Green square (DeVilliers or Bloubergstrand depending on which South African version you have) on the Monopoly board and will be rated as the third most expensive piece of property of the game.

After a long voting session at the beginning of the year the final results have been released; Montreal lies in first place with Riga in second and Cape Town in third.

There was a lot of movement during the January/February voting period as fans voted to see their favourite city on the board. You might be wondering what happened to the "more famous" cities like New York, London, Paris etc? Well they started off well with Paris in first but soon dropped when the likes of Cape Town were voted for.

Montreal and Riga made a huge jump in the polls and unseated those cities from their thrones. Advertising most likely played a large role in which cities were voted for.

Cape Town benefited from this and regular news updates constantly reminded listeners and viewers to vote for Cape Town and Johannesburg. In the end Cape Town made in onto the list however Johannesburg failed to take the top two spots for the Wildcard section which would see it become one of cities allocated the Brown properties.

The Monopoly Here and Now: World Edition, according to Hasbro press reports, will be available from the 26 August 2008 in over 50 countries and in 37 different languages. This version will include new Chance and Community Chest cards and features such as celebrating in Rio de Janeiro and organising an international music festival etc.

Apparently, even the tokens, houses and hotels have been restyled to reflect icons from all seven continents.

    Well done, Cape Town

    Darren Steward,
    Cape Town

    20/08/2008 13:11

And the next!! Vote the snake of your choise for Snakes and ladders.
    20/08/2008 13:15
While I suppose it isgreat to have an SA name on monopoly. What does it do for the rest of us. Rather vote for NO CRIME, EDUCATION and JOBS. - SM

    20/08/2008 13:19
We are all aware of the suffering around us, we need some, be it menial, good news once in a while. - vanZyl

      Great news
    20/08/2008 13:21
Congratulations Cape Town! I am thrilled to read of some good news for a change. This is the sort of publicity we need to improve our economy and to get foreign investors? attention to invest in our beautiful country with endless opportunities. - PM

      @SM Spot On
    20/08/2008 13:22
agree with you chief...we are going to the real elections next year where serious votes would be required not some feel good board game!we should be discussing things that have future meaning my chief! - Kolobe

      Boring!
    20/08/2008 13:24
No matter how many different versions they make, monopoly will always be boring. But hey, GO CAPE TOWN!!!!! - Mo

      Monopoly
    20/08/2008 13:30
I can see from the number of comments that this is real earth shattering news. Yaawnn! - Die griek

      Excellent article..
    20/08/2008 13:31
... and may boost tourism to Cape Town. JKolobe, get a life, not all of us care if Russia attacked Georgia (who????). Let Bush worry about invading Russia in retaliation... - TTboy

      Yay for CapeTown
    20/08/2008 13:32
Cool article - not the standard mynews24 stuff. Having Cape Town in the game on a prominent square does go a little way toward promoting the mother city globally. Guess Kolobe is just disappointed that he can?t play the race card in this article. - RobotFood

    20/08/2008 13:34
There is only one thing more irritating than Kolobe and that's a fellow commentator that gives him the light of day. I'm getting tired of this site, News24 you really need to jack up on the censorship. Another good article ruined, well done Cape Town, i must have voted 100 times for them. - John Camp

      Monopoly
    20/08/2008 13:36
@PM. Foreign Investors because of monopoly? Please, Riga was more popular (where-ever that is??). Will the investors flock their aswell? I'm happy for Cape Town, but realy, news must be slow for this to be published on mynews24. - Die griek

      2010
    20/08/2008 13:42
I'm 100% positive that there will be some people in the world who say 'Hey! Let's go to Cape Town to see the World Cup' becuase of this. So well done to CT for being a flagship for SA. - Kevin

      @PM
    20/08/2008 13:45
I agree buddy, Monopoly must be the most international boardgame on the market. The implications are enormous for us and it proves there are still a few proud South Africans out there. Well done CT! - John Camp

      Ag Shame, Kolobe
    20/08/2008 13:48
Congratulations to CapeTown for inclusion - at least some light and good news. What exactly would u Kolobe want SA to do regarding Russia vs Georgia - invade? We cannot even help to resolve African problems, so previous masters will have to wait. - MJS

      Good
    20/08/2008 13:50
I thik this is good news for SA. Still, the negative people see this as a waste but I agree witht he comments above. All news does not have to be bad. Some good, silly news is good for all of us. Besides, SA needs all the positive news it can get- so lets stand together and be proud. - Mark T

      Blog material this!
    20/08/2008 13:51
I think news24 should have forwaded this article to Cape Town blog instead... - Kolobe

      Kolobe write your own
    20/08/2008 13:54
Why not write your own article...you are one of the most opinionated people I have ever come across!!! I think it is probably because you have nothing constructive to say, and can only find the negative in what others write! Well done Cape Town! - KS

      Well done Cape Town
    20/08/2008 14:03
Will community chest award a Pink bonus to Cape Town? Lol just being mischievous... By the way it is about time that we have a letter that is frivolous, well done. - Doorboot

      @Kolobe.
    20/08/2008 14:05
Ive read your blog twice to see what the fuss was about. I was dissapointed to find nothing of interest or constructive value. Your boring rethoric leaves one feeling slightly braindead after reading it. So I don't waste my time. What I am saying is... if you have no interest in the boardgame at question, then why bother to read or comment? Suppose you just wanted to throw in your 1/2 zim cents worth. Shame. - Ernst Geyser

      Its only a......
    20/08/2008 14:06
    GAME!? - Martin

      Good News
    20/08/2008 14:12
As South Africans, good news is scarse. It's nice to get some once in a while. Also did you know Cape Town has been voted the number on tourist destination city in the USA. Don't let the likes of Kolobe steal the thunder of this small piece of good news. Enjoy and well done to all those who voted. It shows we can make a difference. - Rian

      John Camp
    20/08/2008 14:14
Apologies there for my previous comment......I agree though, we give him too much attention...guess we have to treat him like a 7yr old and just ignore his drivel. As for Monopoly...those who aren't aware of CT will see it in its position of THIRD expensive and will then look it up and see what an AWESOME country we have!!! Definate tourism boost on the cards!!! - KS

      Shame
    20/08/2008 14:16
Great news about Cape Town! Kolobe, seems you got out of bed on the wrong side today. Last couple of weeks I started to agree with your comments, until today when you constantly want to fight with everyone again. Is it not the current government's supporters which continually say that the ANC will lead whatever happens? What is the use then in trying to vote no crime and education when it is only the non ANC supporters which vote? Only the non-ANC supporters which actually care about the masses.. - TJK

      For what it is worth...
    20/08/2008 14:17
Well done Cape Town, thank god for this article I was getting seriously depressed by all the god botherers and racists on this site over the last week or so... what a refreshing article. Kolobe, move on swaar, there is nothing for you here. - Point Blank

thanks Darren! I will forward this article to the nursery!!
    20/08/2008 14:20
Darren obviously my writtings were not meant to discourage your "small piece of good news" as Rian suggest, I was just saying be carefull that in your quest for good news you just dont adopt every little thing as good news!I will forward this to the nursery close to my house since this will obviosly be good news to them! - Kolobe

      Kolobe
    20/08/2008 14:27
What the hell is you problem man? A bit of good news is better than all the bad news we get. I for one am going to buy the new monopoly when is out. I am happy that a South Africa is on the game. Please Kolobe...ooohhhhh...i wish you were in front of me now. - Speedy

WAY TO GO you beautiful city!
    20/08/2008 14:29
GO CAPE TOWN! I agree with all the positive ppl out there...however frivolous or unimportant this article is, it is great to read some good, fun news for a while about our country and the world, instead of constantly being bombarded by only the negative... BIG UPS to all those who voted for this beautiful city (minus a few pessimists amongst us!) :) It just goes to show that sometimes the "little cities" can come out tops and the "big guns" sometimes don't win! - Nicky

      @ John Camp
    20/08/2008 14:37
"News24 you really need to jack up on the censorship"? I think we have enough censorship in this country as is. Glad you're not in government mate. I think it's really cool that we made top 3, even if it's only Monopoly. We certainly have passion, innit? Kolobe, may I suggest a trip to Georgia to help out in the relief effort? - Doomhammer

      Monopoly - SA Edition
    20/08/2008 14:40
Instead of property, take our largest contracts eg Thint, Ferrostaal, BAE Systems etc. You then choose a player eg JZ, Thabo, Tony Y. You then go around collecting taxpayers money and making connections. After you have enough connections you can enter into the contract and you receive a bribe. Of course you might get questioned but you can use the 'get out of court free' and 'get out of jail free' cards. - Kevin

      Hey KS
    20/08/2008 14:50
You landed on Cape Town, i own it with four houses, couldn't afford the hotel, you know how it goes, NCA, interest rates etc. Anyway that's $1600 you owe me, you gonna pay up or what? - John Camp

      Hey John Camp
    20/08/2008 15:06
Why is this Cape Town place so expensive? I thought it was in the middle of Africa somewhere...do they even have roads there? I'll Google it......Man, what a country! that place is alive with culture, it has beautiful oceans, amazing wildlife, and its the country where Nelson Mandela is from! Definately going to have to go check that place out! :) - KS

It is welcoming to see the light hearted banter due to this article. I think it is a stress relief for us all. As for the one blot on the paper- cheer up. Life is not all doom and gloom. I am sure tomorrow we can go back to being serious. Today just enjoy the fun. - Mark T

      @John Camp
    20/08/2008 15:21
Enjoy those four houses while you have them. The Expropriation bill is just around the corner :( - Rian

Kolobe i agree with you comrade.
    20/08/2008 15:24
I agree with Kolobe, there is much more serious issues. Incompetent black people is ruining our country and we discuss Monopoly. Kolobe, my mate, it seems it is only me and you who want to get rid of the black incompetent products of colonialism. The imperialistic west taught africans to be lazy and wait for handouts instead of working. How will we save SA kolobe, i ask my likeminded friend, How! - CH

      Monopoly in the news.
    20/08/2008 15:28
I appreciate the fact that there may be more important issues like wars, famine, and politics but this article was intended to bring some good news to the newsreaders of News24. While we grapple with the concerns of the world we also have to remember to enjoy our lives. The fact that we're third in a world wide vote shows that we are capable of achieving something, even if it seems frivolous, when we work to together. If this concept is'nt inspiring the I don't know what is. - Darren Steward
